Beer Before Fear #14 - The Shining (1980)

Beer Before Fear #14 - The Shining (1980)

Happy New Year, and welcome back to another bone-chilling episode of Beer Before Fear! To kick off 2024, we're digging into the what many believe (including Erik)is one of the greatest horror movies of all time, "The Shining" from 1980, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.  And, this time around, Erik has paired another fantastic beer to go with it, this time from Foam Brewers u[ in Burlington, VT.

After the holiday season, isolation and seasonal depression seems to be pretty common for a lot of people, and so we thought this might be the perfect time to discuss a movie that's all about isolation and seasonal depression, complete with a Double IPA to catch a serious buzz.

So raise your glasses with us as we  dissect and discuss one of the greatest films of all time.

    Cheers!

14 - Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre with Derrick Chow

On episode 14 of Our First Fears, author and illustrator, Derrick Chow joins me in appreciation of the genius and creativity of beloved actress Shelley Duvall’s possibly-accidentally-terrifying television show from the 1980s, Faerie Tale Theatre. Together, we explore the connection between slasher-film final girls and faerie tale heroines, what makes a great faerie tale villain, and whether or not these old stories might have been a prototype for modern psychological analysis and therapy.

Derrick’s debut middle-grade novel, Ravenous Things, is a twisted modern retelling of the Pied Piper legend and poem, set in the underground of Toronto, Canada, and it is available now at your local bookshops and libraries.

Gorman on Gore EP24 The Shining (1980) PART TWO

We're back, to finish the job! Our mighty episode dedicated to The Shining concludes with more bizarre details, an intricate analysis of the book, the film, the actors, and the director. Stephen King is mocked despite his ingenuity. Other works and films of Stephen King are also discussed, such as Cujo, The Langoliers, The Dark Tower series, The Graveyard Shift, and Christine. We finally get to the bottom of all of the conspiracies around the The Shining and arrive at a bit of truth. Tune in for the conclusion of probably one of our finest episodes to date.

Summer of the 80s, Part 1: 1980 - Overexposed? Overlooked? (The Shining & The Changeling)

Summer of the 80s, Part 1: 1980 - Overexposed? Overlooked? (The Shining & The Changeling)

We had better get a head start on summer, with the first in a series of episodes featuring horror movies from the 80s.  Because we're behind schedule with episode releases and we're going to have to do some cramming!

And there's probably no better way to kick things off than with Stanley Kubrick's version of the Stephen King classic, The Shining (1980). Is it just a little bit overexposed, though? Why is it so enduringly fascinating? Are the Grady "twins" actually twins? And can someone just go visit the location where The Shining was filmed? This is such a huge, intimidating movie, that we had to call in some backup. The Average Amy returns to the podcast to help us answer some of these questions.

How about a  slow-burn haunter that may be somewhat overlooked? George C. Scott moves into a historically preserved mansion after the deaths of his wife and daughter, and ends up as the point of contact for a ghost seeking to expose the truth in The Changeling (1980). It does include a really impressive, believable séance scene. Hey, you have to have a séance!

And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1980!

Gorman on Gore EP23 The Shining (1980)

Gorman on Gore EP23 The Shining (1980)

Was Wendy Torrance a good cook? Did Danny Torrrance trick his dad into becoming a murderer? Does Stephen King think he's Jack Torrance? All these questions and more are tackled as Peter and Jacob delve into the terrifying depths of Stanley Kubrick's greatest masterwork, The Shining. Cabin fever at its best. Horror at its most refined. Shelley Duvall at her most antagonized. The terror behind the camera very nearly equals what came out of on the screen, as Kubrick demanded hundreds of takes, driving nearly everyone mad! Every major theory about this film is covered. So join us, sell your soul for a glass of beer. You were always the caretaker here.

    Episode 1 - The Shining

    Episode 1 - The Shining

Published in 1977, the popularity of Stephen King’s gothic horror novel, “The Shining”, is outmatched only by the 1980 film adaptation by legendary director Stanley Kubrick.

Jack Torrance has been hired to be the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, a grand hotel with a violent past, located high up in the Colorado mountains.  Along with his wife, Wendy and their son Danny, the Torrance family settles in for what is supposed to be a peaceful winter of family togetherness.  However, as Jack slowly descends into madness and something new awakens within Danny, a battle between good and evil, with the Overlook Hotel at the centre, is beginning.

Stephen King has said that he was inspired to write “The Shining” after staying a night at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.  “The Shining’s” book disclaimer reads: Some of the most beautiful resort hotels in the world are located in Colorado, but the hotel in these pages is based on none of them.  The Overlook and the people associated with it exist wholly within the author’s imagination.  However, in our first podcast episode, we will explore the rather interesting true story behind the Stanley Hotel and argue that maybe, just maybe, it influenced Stephen King, and “The Shining” a little more than he thinks it did.

Lizard women, pools, and an unhealthy amount of yellow. We praise this highly artistic collaboration between Altman and Duvall (who wrote her own monologues, diary entries, and recipes for the film) -- but this isn't the first "art film" to show your mildly curious friends.

Popeye is artful chaos, plus the Robin Williams Mt. Rushmore

The first Disney film to feature a cuss word, and the first film to feature Robin Williams (and Linda Hunt if we're keeping score).

It's Popeye, the 1980 musical comedy by Robert Altman.  In this episode we visit the island of Malta to delve into what movie Altman was trying to make, where Swee'Pea's psychic powers came from, and whether or not you should ship Popeye and Olive Oyl.  Plus, we build a monument to Robin Williams!  So open up a can of spinach and join us for a movie conversation that's odd, informative, and somehow involves legos and tattoos.
