Pete Ganbarg | The A&R executive behind Santana's 9x Grammy album Supernatural

Pete Ganbarg is a 2-time Grammy Award-winning music business executive who is currently President of A&R for Atlantic Records and President of ATCO Records.

Pete began his career in A&R in 1989 at SBK Records through a mutual friendship with SBK founder Charles Koppelman's son, Brian Koppelman. Brian had previously encouraged Pete to join the label while student-teaching English in Middletown, Connecticut, stating “one day you have to work for my dad.” When SBK ceased operations in the late-1990s, Pete joined Clive Davis at Arista Records as Sr. Director, A&R. The first artist he worked with at Arista was Santana, for whom Pete conceived and A&R’d the 30× Platinum World Wide, 9X Grammy Winning Album of the Year, Supernatural.

In early 2001, Pete left Arista and joined Epic Records as Sr. Vice President, A&R.

Pete left Epic in late 2003 to start his own A&R consulting business, Pure Tone Music. Pure Tone's label clients included Arista Records, RCA Records, Virgin Records, and Atlantic Records. Company projects included albums by Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Halestorm, Train, Santana, Kenny G, Aaron Neville, America, Donna Summer, and Chaka Khan.

He joined Atlantic Records as Executive Vice President/Head of A&R in mid-October 2008 and was named President of A&R in late 2017.

As of 2021, he also hosts "Rock & Roll High School," a podcast interview series that spotlights figures from the history of contemporary music.

Ganbarg is a graduate of Wesleyan University.

    Stablecoins Are Unstable!

    Stablecoins Are Unstable!

The $1.3tn cryptocurrency industry was on Thursday hit by one of its toughest challenges when stablecoin Tether — a critical cog in the market — failed to maintain its link with the US dollar. The company refuses to provide details on the Treasury holdings that back the stablecoin claiming their fear of revealing the ‘secret sauce.’

Tether tumbled as low as 95.11 cents yesterday, far below the $1 peg that it seeks to maintain. Its price later recovered, but the slip-up, days after the failure of smaller algorithmic stablecoin rival TerraUSD, (and its paired coin Luna) sent bitcoin — the world’s biggest digital asset — sinking to its lowest level since late 2020.

Ratings group Fitch said the troubles at Tether and TerraUSD “highlight the fragile nature of private stablecoins, and will accelerate calls for regulation”.
In todays video we look at how algorithmic stablecoins like Terra work, we discuss their importance in DeFi and smart contracts.

#199: Kendall Roy, Kenny G, Chanel Advent Calendar

#199: Kendall Roy, Kenny G, Chanel Advent Calendar

It’s Listmas with everyone revealing their bests of the year, and we’re reflecting back on the best TV shows of 2021.

One of them wrapped it’s third season this week; perfect timing for the New Yorker to publish a quite intense profile of it’s main star.

While filming Succession, where does Jeremy Strong end and Kendall Roy begin?

We already know what will be Myf’s fave of the year, after seeing the trailer for a new doco on Kenny G.

And as we wind towards Christmas, don’t invest in a Chanel Advent Calendar. Really, don’t.

But do listen to a great podcast about Italian food, or watch The Shrink Next Door, those we absolutely co-sign on.

1992 - October: Soup Dragons “Hotwired”

1992 - October: Soup Dragons “Hotwired”

A number of groups came out of the psychedelic pop scene in Northern England and Scotland in the late 80's including Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Jesus and the Mary Chain, and The Soup Dragons.  Their third album, Hotwired, was released in October 1992.

The Soup Dragons got their name from a character in a 1970's UK children's television series called "Clangers," which consisted of short films about a family of mouse-like creatures that live on a small moon-like planet.  They speak only in a whistled language, and only eat green soup, which is supplied by the Soup Dragon.

The Soup Dragons lineup for this album were Sean Dickson on vocals and guitar, Jim McCullough on backing vocals and guitar, Sushil K. Dade on bass, and Paul Quinn on percussion.  They started off as an indie-rock group, but switched to a more dance-rock oriented band when they were without a drummer and started using a drum machine on their second album.

The group received some club play with their first indie-dance track called "Mother Universe," but their first big hit was "I'm Free," a fast paced cover of the Rolling Stones song.  They toured the U.S. for two years, and performed on both the David Letterman and Arsenio Hall late night shows.

The Soup Dragons would produce one more studio album after Hotwired, and would disband a year later in 1995.

We think you will enjoy the early 90's rock-dance groove of this most successful album of the Soup Dragon's discography.

    Pleasure
Is everybody ready?  This first track on the album made it to number 69 on the Billboard 100, and number 14 in the Modern Rock charts.  It is about living your life - "Take it to the limit, live it to the full."

    Divine Thing
The big hit off the album made it to number 26 on the Billboard 100, and was a staple of the burgeoning stable of alternative rock stations in the early 90's.  It is an homage to Glenn Milstead, more famously known as Divine in John Waters movies.  The music video for this song is the first to display transgender and drug culture to be placed in daytime rotation in the USA.

    Sweet Layabout
This is a bit deeper of a cut.  A layabout is a lazy person who is comfortable letting others do things for them.  "Well, hallelujah.  Why don't you sit there in your chair.  'Cause you ain't nothing but the Devil's clientele."

    Mindless
This track is a softer song that describes the initial infatuation of an early relationship.  You get mindless over the person and can't think of anything else.  "Jesus Christ took his time when inventing you, and Mother Nature couldn't leave our dream come true."

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

I Gotcha by Joe Tex (from the motion picture "Reservoir Dogs")
Quentin Tarantino's debut features what Tarantino would become famous for - lots of violence, and great music.

    STAFF PICKS:

Jump Around by House of Pain
Rob's staff pick dips into the hip-hop genre.  Everlast, DJ Lethal, and Danny Boy formed the band, and the song made it to number 3 in the U.S.  A lot of debate was created around what created the “scream” sound, with some thinking it comes from "Get Off" by Prince, and other's thinking it comes from Junior Walker and the All Stars.  The University of Wisconsin plays this in the fourth quarter to hype up the crowd.

Jimmy Olsen's Blues by The Spin Doctors
Bruce features a song inspired by the Superman comics.  Jimmy Olsen is the junior photographer.  Chris Barron was inspired to write this when sneaking into the Brown University cafeteria and seeing a girl who reminded him of Lois Lane.  The "pocket full of kryptonite" represents what is special or unique about you.

Life Is A Highway by Tom Cochrane
Brian hits the road with former Red Rider front man Tom Cochrane.  This song encourages folks to "seize the day," and get motivated.  Cochrane wrote it after a visit to Africa, and seeing the poverty around him.  It is interesting that such a positive song came out of a close brush with poverty.  Rascal Flatts would cover the song for the movie "Cars."

At the Hundredth Meridian by the Tragically Hip
Wayne stays in Canada with a group much more popular in the Great White North than in the U.S.  The hundredth meridian is considered a dividing line between east and west Canada.  The Hip stayed together from 1984 until 2017 when lead singer Gord Downie died of brain cancer.

    INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:

Forever In Love by Kenny G.
You can't go wrong with a saxophone - or can you?

Additionally, he produced some of the biggest movie soundtrack songs of all time, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World,” and “My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic

    ABOUT WALTER AFANSIEFF

Thirteen-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner Walter Afanasieff is best known for his collaborative songwriting and production partnership with Mariah Carey that yielded hit singles such as “Can’t Let Go,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “Without You,” “Anytime You Need a Friend,” “Butterfly,” “My All,” and “One Sweet Day,” a duet with Boyz II Men that was named ASCAP Song of the Year. It hit #1 in December of 1995 and stayed there for sixteen weeks—a record that remained unbroken for more than two decades. Their “All I Want for Christmas is You” was released in 1994 and has since become a holiday standard. It hit #1 on Billboard’s pop chart for the first time in 2019, giving Walter and Mariah the world record for the longest period of time between a song’s original release and its arrival at the top of the chart.

In addition to his success with Carey, Afanasieff carved out a formidable reputation as a go-to producer of hit movie songs. After co-writing and co-producing the Gladys Knight single “Licence to Kill” from the James Bond film of the same name, he went on to produce “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, “Even If My Heart Would Break” from The Bodyguard, and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, which became the best-selling single in the world for 1998. Additionally he produced “Some Day” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Academy Award nominated “Go the Distance” from Hercules.

Other hits from the Walter Afanasieff songbook include “Can You Stop the Rain,” a #1 R&B single for Peabo Bryson that earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song, “Missing You Now,” a #1 Adult Contemporary hit for Michael Bolton, “If You Go Away,” a Top 20 single for New Kids on the Block, Savage Garden’s #1 pop single “I Knew I Loved You,” and Ricky Martin’s massive global hit “She Bangs.”

The long list of additional artists Walter has written and produced music for includes Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, Destiny's Child, Kenny G, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, Marc Anthony, Babyface, and Josh Groban.

    Richard Smith

    Richard Smith
Departing slightly from the nylon string world to explore contemporary styles with guitarist Richard Smith (although you will hear some nylon string playing from Italian Francesco Buzzurro on their collaborative album). When I met Richard, he was the department chair of the Studio/Jazz Guitar department at USC, and along with USC’s fairly new Popular Music program, Smith has since refocused his teaching duties from jazz to emphasize more contemporary and popular music styles. We will reap the benefits of that popular music knowledge here today, as he will give us some great songwriting advice. Smith’s forte is in smooth jazz and jazz fusion and he utilizes this genre to explore a great variety of styles, his latest being Argentine tango with a healthy dose of electronica. You’ll also hear him discuss the bad rap given to smooth jazz, along with some incredibly poignant suggestions for those determined to pursue a career in music.
