Using Nitti Bucks in Class to Prepare Kids for the Real World with Amanda Nitti

#042.  Today’s guest is Amanda Nitti.  Amanda discusses her classroom economy system and how it teaches vital financial literacy skills to her students in a fun, engaging way.  She discusses how she gets buy-in from her students on the types of jobs in the classroom and how her students must apply for jobs in the classroom.

She also highlights the value of entrepreneurship as part of this system through the idea of the Class Market.  We discuss the importance of tracking your cash inflows and outflows in making spending decisions and budgeting and the fun and entertaining way she teaches needs vs wants.

We also discuss non-financial and vital values that students are learning, rewards and items that can be purchased using “Nitti Bucks” and the importance of keeping kids accountable and how we can ensure kids are making informed decisions about their money.

Cryptocurrency and NFT Investing for our Teenagers with Robert Farrington

Cryptocurrency and NFT Investing for our Teenagers with Robert Farrington

#017.  Today’s guest is Robert Farrington.  Robert and I talk about his passion and early interest in personal finance and investing, including what inspired him to start The College Investor to help millennials start long-term investing and get out of student loan debt.  We talk about why Robert is a big believer in the ROI approach to college.  And we get into the struggles for millennials to find balance as the sandwich generation, with aging parents and young children, juggling between competing financial priorities in their lives.

We next dive into the world of cryptocurrencies, blockchain and NFTs to gain a deeper understanding of their purpose, use cases, and analogies of how you can think about them.  We talk about why Robert views crypto as a currency, rather than as in investment.  But at the same time, we talk about how crypto and NFTs can act as the onramp to getting our teens and young adult children excited and engaged about investing.  We also dive into how our teenage kids should get started in investing and exploring many different asset classes, including crypto. And we get into why it actually may be better off in the long run to have small, manageable losses, rather than outsized gains.  Finally, we talk about the ultimate benefits of having our teenagers and young adults invested, which is to help them build the habits and skills of saving/investing and tracking their investments.

34 - Life Skills for Teens

34 - Life Skills for Teens

In this episode we’ll talk about how to get our older kids, teens and tweens, to experience the bigger picture stuff and expose them to some of the messiness of life in a loving, supportive environment where they might even mess up some.  Everything from chores they should know how to do on their own to handling money, cars and how to get a part time job.  I’ll talk about planning vacations in addition to how to handle routine paperwork and cooking.  It’s sort of a laundry list of items I think any parent should consider when training your kids for the future.

Here's a list of topics that are covered:
    Laundry
    Cooking
    Cleaning House
    Yard work
    Painting
    Money
    Filling out forms

16 - Money Matters: Teen and Tween Edition

16 - Money Matters: Teen and Tween Edition

In this podcast I’m going to cover issues relating to money with middle and high schoolers.  I will go over how to give money and how much, when to give money, and how to set up responsible money habits including how to use an ATM card, checking account, credit cards.

Money is a huge challenge for us all and at this stage your high schooler or middle schooler is at a huge crossroads with learning life skills.  Dealing with money is a much-neglected skill during these years yet they are the most crucial years to allow as many affordable mistakes as possible. This makes money a prime target for small mistakes now to avoid big mistakes later. If you know someone who can’t manage money as an adult, I’m going to guess their parents didn’t teach them much about it, might have given in to every whim just to keep them happy when they were young.  Hey, that adult might even be you!

If you listened to my podcast about money for younger kids, you’ll have already heard how to start a small budget for vacations and special events that I call a trinket budget.  We’re going to expand on that concept greatly by including more of the day-to-day expenses our kids encounter, not just vacations and special events.

With older kids I want to help you introduce money concepts so that by the time they graduate from high school they know about budgeting, credit cards and debt.  I’m even going to show you a way to tie in getting chores done which is such a bonus.  You want to launch a financially responsible child into the world so that you won’t be paying their bills for the rest of your life.

There are things to do at different ages and stages to help introduce money concepts to your kids so that by the time they graduate from high school they know about budgeting, credit cards and debt.   In this podcast, I’ll concentrate on what to do with younger kids, from toddler years up through elementary school using a simple spend-save-share method.
