    Phillip J. Clayton (Part 2 of 2)

    Phillip J. Clayton (Part 2 of 2)

We’re ending out the month of November with the second part of my conversation with the one and only Phillip J. Clayton. (If you missed the first part of this interview, check it out here.)

After sharing his thoughts on brand purpose, we started discussing our experiences with art and education, and he spoke about facing limitations in school due to dyslexia and feeling misunderstood by teachers and other authority figures. Phillip also talked about his experiences working with renowned brands (including PepsiCo), judging creative work, the evolving nature of packaging design, the need for a holistic view of design.

Big thanks to Phillip for such a wide-ranging conversation!

    Phillip J. Clayton (Part 1 of 2)

    Phillip J. Clayton (Part 1 of 2)

Phillip J. Clayton is a design voice that you need to know. The Kingston-based creative is a strategic advisor, an international design judge, and an expert on branding. We talked for hours about his career and his philosophies on branding and life, so I split this episode into two parts just to make sure nothing got lost. If you’re interested in branding, then get ready for a masterclass!

Our conversation started off with a check-in on this year, and then Phillip shared his goals about being seen as a facilitator and about tackling complex problems and making a meaningful impact. We also talked about how he started his own company PJClayton & Co., the client-vendor relationship, and Phillip dropped a ton of knowledge about his creative process, brand purpose, and the power of extracting valuable information from conversations. (Kind of like what you’re doing with this episode!)

Tune in next week for Part 2! Happy Thanksgiving!

HRN's Catskills Field Day: Highlighting the Reher Center of Kingston, NY

HRN's Catskills Field Day: Highlighting the Reher Center of Kingston, NY

On August 27th & 28th, 2022, HRN hosted its First Annual Catskills Field Day: a two day celebration of the foodways of the Catskills and Hudson Valley. Our final event was a fresh flour pancake breakfast at Putt Putt Van Winkle, with pancakes by baker and educator Amy Halloran

In this episode, Amy sits down to interview Sarah Litvin, PhD, the Executive Director of the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History. Sarah shares the some highlights of the Reher Center's work in Kingston, NY, including past and upcoming exhibits. Before they get to the present, they also cover the past, as the Reher Center building served as a prominent Jewish Bakery for nearly a century. Kingston residents of the surrounding Rondout neighborhood, mostly working class and immigrant, came to Reher’s for bread, canned goods, and gossip.

Today, the site is as a museum and cultural center that preserves and honors the legacy of Reher's Bakery and amplifies immigrant stories of the Hudson Valley, past and present. The Reher Center's mission is to foster belonging by engaging all people through culture, community, work, and bread.

The Reher Center Gallery is open from 1-6pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

About Our Guest Host, Amy Halloran: A writer and change agent, Amy works to add social values and economic viability to farms, cities, families, the emergency feeding system, and communities. Her love for pancakes led her to write a book about flour, THE NEW BREAD BASKET: How the New Crop of Grain Growers, Plant Breeders, Millers, Maltsters, Bakers, Brewers, and Local Food Activists Are Redefining Our Daily Loaf. She lives in Troy, New York, and works with the Artisan Grain Collaborative in the Upper Midwest, and the Northeast Grainshed to create networks that support regional grains. Amy loves to create bridges between ideas and people through food.

Tracy Gilpin- In 1986 Tracy Gilpin went to a party and walked toward home with friends, she never arrived

Tracy Gilpin was a typical teenager in Kingston, Massachusetts. She was walking home from a local party with friends. Her friend's homes came up quicker than Tracy's. She even called the party host for a ride home, however the she didn't come. Tracy went missing and her body was found in the Myles Standish State Park in neighboring Plymouth, Ma. She had a massive head injury and there was signs of sexual assault. Tracy Gilpin was 15 years old and her family was devastated. The case went cold very quickly and it seemed the case would never be solved. In 2018 the police received a tip about a former resident Michael Hand. Mr. Hand was arrested after a quasi-confession, however he attempted to blame this horrendous crime on another infamous Kingston resident, Henry Meinholz. Old fashioned police work appears to have solved this cold case after almost 40 years. The case is scheduled for trial later this year.

Jamaica: Home of Reggae, Blue Mountain Coffee, and Seven Mile Beach

Jamaica: Home of Reggae, Blue Mountain Coffee, and Seven Mile Beach

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, Jamaica has much more to offer than most Caribbean islands. When thinking of an all-inclusive vacation, many think of only relaxing on the beach. While Jamaica has some of the best resorts in the world with resorts such as Sandals Negril & Couples Swept Away, there is so much more to Jamaica than incredible beachside resorts. Visitors to Jamaica can enjoy some of the best coffee in the world at the Blue Mountains, visit the historic city of Kingston, or climb up the river of Dunn's River Falls. Better yet, Jamaica has some of the most popular cuisines in the Caribbean with classic dishes like Jerk Chicken and Jamaican Patties.

Joining The Travel Agents in this episode is one of our fellow travel experts Robin and our Jamaican local Sean-Pierre, a member of the Jamaican Tourism board.
