    The Avant-Garde Longevity Method

    The Avant-Garde Longevity Method

We read Clement Greenberg's "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" (1939) and discuss where the avant-garde went, introduce a horseshoe theory to explain the KAWS cereal, and debate whether or not the Marina Abramović Longevity Method is a conceptual project or sell-out.

YNFA 054: Cry-Baby, or Campy Nowhere

YNFA 054: Cry-Baby, or Campy Nowhere

Warm up the water in your tiny tin bathtub and pull out your pastel pedal pushers hat as we bebop into John Waters’s Cry-Baby. Did Waters achieve the ultimate level of Postmodern metatextual campiness by creating a pastiche of his own film style here? Can the power of a quality goth accessory really change hearts and minds? Is this perhaps the best Willem Dafoe cameo ever? And is Kim McGuire, aka "Hatchet-Face", basically the biggest badass who ever lived? We’ll let you know after this sloppy, sloppy make-out session.

6 major plot holes in Netflix’s Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire

6 major plot holes in Netflix’s Rebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire
Netflix’s latest release titled Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire has received mixed reviews. Considering Zack Snyder’s cultural influences and his ability to create countless discourses about his films, it is no surprise that Rebel Moon has had this effect on audiences and critics. It can be best described as an engaging new space opera film, packed with visually arresting action and drama. The film’s flair and kitsch have been well received by viewers who’ve slotted it as one that may not win you over if you’ve not been a fan of Snyder’s characteristic style. Most criticism surrounding the film centers around the fact that the film feels like a reductive jumble of compelling visuals and genre-specific clichés, with little time and effort invested in character development. In any case, the film does lack coherence with a greater emphasis placed on style rather than content, which leaves significant narrative gaps.

So viel vorweg: ES IST WAS PERSÖNLICHES!

The Best Little Camp Classic in Texas

The Best Little Camp Classic in Texas

As usual, we get a recap that is basically a description of the VHS tape before launching into our discussion on  The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Darcy discusses how she first saw it and why it was her pick for this episode. Joe, Katie, and MJ talk about the film's camp status.

    Further topics include:

    • the odd demonization of gays as seen in the Dom DeLuise character Melvin P. Thorpe
    • the real life drama of the Chicken Ranch
    • how much we love Dolly
    • how the gay football team helps define its camp classic status
    • the Mona-Ed Earl relationship
    • weird racial tropes of the 80s
    • its potential copaganda status
    • departures from the stage play
    • casting
    • Charles Durning's WTF oscar nomination for his role of the governor

Then we cap it off with some rapid fire trivia questions, followed by more open-ended questions.

As always, we wrap the episode up with some closing thoughts.

    Eurovision, Eurotrash, & Camp

    Eurovision, Eurotrash, & Camp

In this edition of Swerve South, Jaime and Theresa discuss the campy delight of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Will Ferrell’s spoof/celebration of the international song competition Eurovision. Our hosts share some of their favorite moments from the film: cameos from former Eurovision winners like Conchita Wurst, outrageous costumes and performances, and the surprisingly moving ending. The episode explores Eurovision’s odd combination of artificial, schlocky camp and absolute sincerity and contemplates why the international pop culture phenomenon has yet to land with American audiences. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Eurovision or a newcomer, this episode is a great introduction to both the movie and the contest’s over-the-top charms.

Episode 21: The Trash Stratum - Part 2

Episode 21: The Trash Stratum - Part 2
The writings of underground filmmaker Jack Smith serve as a starting point for Phil and JF's second tour of the trash stratum. In their wanderings, they will uncover such moldy jewels as the 1944 film Cobra Woman, the exploitation flick She-Devils on Wheels, and (wonder of wonders) Hitchcock's Vertigo. The emergent focus of the conversation is the dichotomy of passionate commitment and ironic perspective, attitudes that largely determine whether a given object will turn out to appear as a negligible piece of garbage... or the Holy Grail. By the end, our hosts realize that even their own personal trash strata may give off shimmers of the divine.
