In Philippians 3, Paul uses shocking language to describe his past religious achievements. Perhaps because he knows how destructive and divisive building an identity on human achievement can be. He then reminds his friends in Philippi of the true and lasting source of his (and their) new identity.

Following Paul’s example, reject trusting in yourself and everything that springs from your pride for the sake of Christ. Turn your gaze upon Jesus and reckon Him to be the only foundation for your justification before God. He is the singular source of genuine joy—everything else is loss! This is why the apostle could boldly declare: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil. 1:21)! Are you prepared to repeat these words with the apostle Paul?

In a world as unsettling as this. When we realize our lives are not in our own hands. And that we are subject to all the vagaries and miseries of this life. What can settle our hearts? I. The clear and simple Gospel message embraces two opposing realities - judgment for sin or an eternal blessed future in heaven.
