Parsha: Chayei Sarah - The Transformation of Eliezer (5782)

Eliezer was Abraham's right hand man. He was in charge of all of Abraham's affairs. According to the Talmud, Eliezer was the consummate student of Abraham, drawing from Abraham's wellsprings of Torah and sharing it with others. In our Parsha, Eliezer was the central protagonist. Eliezer was conscripted by Abraham to travel east to Aram Naharayim to secure a spouse for Isaac. The journey, we discover, is unprecedentedly successful. Upon close examination, Eliezer is utterly transformed forever as a result.

Discussing Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe on the Chinuch Today Podcast

The Hebrew word for education is "Chinuch". Rabbi Yerachmiel Garfield is the Head of School of Yeshiva Torat Emet, the school in Houston, Texas that we send our children to, and is the host of the Chinuch Today podcast. In his podcasts, he interviews teachers and educators about Jewish education. He asked my brother and I if we would be willing to be interviewed to talk about our illustrious grandfather, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe and share some stories about his life, his educational philosophy, and what it was like to grow up with a famous last name. Rabbi Garfield was kind enough to allow me to post his podcast on mine. I hope you enjoy it.

Parsha: Vayeira - Abraham Abraham

On the second day of Rosh Hashanah each year we read chapter 22 of Genesis, the Binding of Isaac episode. Abraham is instructed to take his beloved son Isaac and offer him as a sacrifice atop Mount Moriah. Abraham does as told, only to be stopped at the very last moment. In this very special Parsha podcast episode, we explore three dimensions of this iconic event. We try to go deep and deeper as is our mandate. We begin by addressing the three times that people are described as walking together; we proceed by suggesting a new approach to the call of the angel, "Abraham, Abraham;" and we end with the curious overlap between Abraham's Binding of Isaac and Adam's banishment from the Garden. This is an episode that you will really enjoy.

This applies both in the spiritual domain and in the material/physical domain. A believer who understands that the Almighty gives everyone exactly what they need must be joyous with their lot. Your lot is exactly what the Almighty apportioned to you to fulfill your mission in life. It is also way number 27 to wisdom.

Parsha: Vayeira - Exodus From Sodom (5782)

For the third time in the Torah, we read about destruction. Previously, the Flood destroyed the world save Noah and family, and the Dispersal ended the universal civilization, and in our parsha we read about the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah. The timing of Sodom's destruction is really interesting. Our Sages said that it happened on Passover on the same day that Lot was appointed judge over the city. Why did the city's destruction coincide with the day that its most famous and righteous citizen became its judge? In this sweeping episode we study the destruction of Sodom, Abraham's unsuccessful intercession on their behalf, and the events that led up to its demise, and draw powerful lessons from what we discover.

Parsha: Lech Lecha - Applying for a Name Change (5782)

Abraham and Sarah undergo seismic changes in our Parsha. Their names get changed as does their destiny. Originally, they were barren, but in our Parsha, the founding Patriarch and Matriarch are told that they will bear a son, Isaac. The mechanics of how this transformation occurred, however, is a bit of a head scratcher. Our Sages tell us that it was because of their original names and identities, Abram and Sarai, that precluded them from childbearing. The name change itself altered their identities to facilitate their fertility. In this episode, we study the nature of what happened here and reveal the path via which we too can swap identities and reap the rewards of our new selves.

Parsha: Noach - Secret Of Invincibility

We started this week's Parsha Podcast by talking about the Tower of Babel episode. We gleaned from that story something absolutely transformational and deep. We then proceeded to talk about the unusual contribution that Noah gave to the people of his generation. In that second segment, we also derived something very profound. Deeper. The podcast ended with a third segment related to the sin that doomed the generation and to the precise dimensions of the Ark. The deepest of them all.

On Parenting with the Podfather, Avi Wolbe

Parents are sent home with newborn babies without an instruction manual. They are expected to raise their child(ren) to become productive, responsible, and successful adults. As Jews, we have an added responsibility to raise our children as good Jews. Parents face a monumental task. This was always nightmarishly difficult, but with the rapidly-changing world that we live in, this is becoming increasingly difficult. To help parents and educators navigate the minefield of parenting and pedagogy, I asked my dear father, Mr. Avi Wolbe (the "Podfather"), to join the podcast and share his insights and tips drawn from his vast experience raising nine children with great skill and success. Parsha: Bereishis - Microcosm of History

Today is a bittersweet day. Although we are very excited to embark on year 8 of the Parsha Podcast, we are only a few days after the terrible attacks in Israel, where hundreds of our brethren were massacred. In light of the terrible atrocities perpetrated against our people and the war that is sparked, we begin this season of the Parsha Podcast with addressing the situation from a Torah perspective. We proceed to discuss the first parsha of the Torah: Bereishis. In keeping with this years theme of DAD - deep and deeper - of trying to see a bit deeper - to read not just the text but also the subtext of the parsha - we talk about three subjects in the parsha: the Genesis narrative and it's overarching message, the unusual source for the dust of which Adam's body was created, and an interesting observation about the birth of Noah.
