Episode 15: Leadership, Burnout & Personal Sustainability with Dr. Katherine Semler

We’ve all likely experienced some degree of burnout or overwhelm in the course of our lives, especially since the pandemic. But what exactly is burnout? How can we recognize the signs of it, prevent it from overtaking us, and heal from it once we’ve experienced it? My guest on the show today is Dr. Katherine Semler. Katherine has worked for 25 years in the field of leadership development. She is a senior partner at Korn Ferry and an adjunct faculty member at Ashridge Hult Business School. She is the co-author of Running On Empty, a book about burnout and the practices that can protect us from it.

We recorded this episode together in Girona, Spain, where we recently led a retreat together on Personal Sustainability and Creativity Through Writing and Contemplative Arts. Our conversation focuses on leadership, Katherine’s research on burnout, and personal sustainability, including practices to help prevent burnout and refill our energetic wells, such as creativity, movement, and time in nature.

For our Creativity Pro-Tip for today, I encourage you to set aside some time in your schedule, even if it’s only 30 minutes or so, to put away the to-do list, write in a journal, get out some paints or markers, or play some music. Get your hands in the dirt and do some gardening, or cook a nice meal. Notice what happens. The more often you allow yourself to replenish in this way, the more energy you’ll have for your life, and the less you’ll be susceptible to burnout.

Ana Dutra: "Think of Your Board Journey As Any Career."

Ana Dutra: "Think of Your Board Journey As Any Career."

    0:00 Intro.

    1:45 Start of interview.

2:40 Ana's "origin story". She was born and raised in Rio do Janeiro, Brazil. She got degrees in law and economics, and started her career in sales at IBM in Brazil in the mid-1980s. In 1992 she moved to the U.S. to get an MBA at Northwestern University. That led to a career of over 30 years in technology, M&A and global business transformations. A couple of years ago she retired from her last job as CEO, and she embarked in her board "portfolio career": public, private and non-profit boards, in addition to teaching and doing some advisory work for CEOs.

4:55 Her advice for aspiring directors: "Think of your board journey as any career." She started serving on non-profit boards and worked her way up to private and public companies. Her first public company board was CME Group. She's served on 7 public company boards, plus many private and non-profit boards.

7:46 Distinctions on serving on public/private/non-profit boards ("even within those buckets there are significant differences.") Her other current public company boards: First Internet Bancorp (NASDAQ: INBK), Carparts.com (NASDAQ: PRTS); Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS), and Pembina Pipeline (NYSE: PBA). When she thinks about board opportunities, she thinks about three things:

    1. Is she aligned with the mission/vision of the company and what it stands for.
    2. Does she have the skills, experience, credentials and competencies to add value to the board.
    3. Does she like the people (other board members).

12:56 Her experience serving on the board of Eletrobras, a major Brazilian state-owned power generation company. "There is always a give and take --what you offer and what you learn-- and that to me is what makes board service so interesting."

16:27 Her thoughts on the evolution of ESG and DEI. Her article "Cutting Through the ESG Noise: A Practical Framework for Corporate Boards" with Cigdem Oktem, Regional Leader, EY Center for Board Matters.

22:15 Her thoughts on boardroom diversity, SB-826 and AB-979 getting struck down in California Courts. "I wish we didn't have to rely on quotas, but the truth is that when left in the hands of nom/gov chairs, board chairs and companies and executives, [progress] was just not happening."

"All I can hope for is that some halo effect [since SB-826] has demonstrated that having diversity and inclusion on boards is a good business practice."

24:41 On the progress of Latinos on boards. She serves on the board of the Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA), co-Chairs its Latino Corporate Directors Educational Foundation (LCDEF) that delivers on the BoardReady Institute (BRI).

28:20 On the politicization of boards. "Over the last three years there has been extreme politicization globally, not only in the U.S." "I am a big proponent of full disclosure on where you stand as an institution and/or corporation."

32:18 Her thoughts on Coinbase's position (a "mission driven company") and Salesforce (strong proponent of stakeholder capitalism). "Both companies took a stand, and that is what's important."

34:52 Her take on governance practices in the tech industry. On the role of experience and self-awareness in leadership.

37:17 Discussion of founder-led tech companies, governance consequences, and reverse bias discrimination. "Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity but cash is reality." "Sometimes there is too much of a good thing." "What is lacking is appreciation and respect for experience."

44:52 The 3 books that have greatly influenced her life:

    1. Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl (1946)
    2. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho (1988)
    3. Exodus, by Leon Uris  (1958)

46:06- Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them? "I have had so many, I apply a 360 mentorship model" "I crave feedback and mentorship all the time."

47:05 - Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?

    1. "When contemplating an opportunity, if you don't foresee the possibility of death, bankruptcy or prison, then go for it!"
    2. "Always think about how to pay it forward" (good karma)
    3. Particularly for women who suffer from imposter syndrome: "Remember that you're seeing people from the outside where they seem so confident but you don't know what they are feeling on the inside, so do your thing, walk in confident, don't worry too much about outside influence."

49:16- An unusual habit or an absurd thing that she loves: "Melting chocolate and top it with yogurt or nuts to pretend that it's healthy." Reality TV, she's watched every season of the Survivor!

50:30 - The living person she most admires: her middle sister, a pediatrician in Brazil, "probably the most knowledgeable, powerful and yet so humble and generous."

Ana Dutra is an experienced CEO, business advisor and corporate director of publicly traded, family-owned and private corporations. As CEO of Korn Ferry Consulting, Ana led the global the Board  Effectiveness practice. Ana currently serves as corporate director at the CME Group (NASDAQ: CME), First Internet Bancorp (NASDAQ: INBK), Carparts.com (NASDAQ: PRTS); Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS), and Pembina Pipeline (NYSE: PBA). She also serves on the Board of the Latino Corporate Directors Association and co-Chairs its Educational Foundation Board.

Disability Insurance | Aaron Goldberg | PGA Players' Series #10

Disability Insurance | Aaron Goldberg | PGA Players' Series #10

The single most important driver of your Net Worth is your physical ability to play golf. If you are hurt or sick and cannot play for an extended period, this has significant impact on your earnings. Not only does it impact your on-course earnings, but it can affect your endorsement deals as well. So why is disability insurance one of the most overlooked parts of players’ financial structures?

The Tour has a disability policy for players with certain exempt status. It is meant to help if you get hurt/sick, but not cover everything. It is important to know what you get as a benefit and when you can receive it if you were to be eligible. Chances are what the Tour supplies, (PGA or Korn Ferry) is not going to be enough to cover what you need. In this podcast we will discuss the unique disability needs of professional golfers and what you can do about it.

Waste Management Open week is unlike any other on tour. It brings with it all sorts of craziness: sometimes good sometimes bad. This is a good reminder that sometimes things go wrong off the golf course and can potentially have a major impact on your finances if not protected correctly.

From minor car accidents, someone getting hurt on your property, to dog bites and parties, if someone sees an opportunity to sue, they will. Make sure you understand how to protect yourself from unforeseen liabilities and keep your personal assets and business assets separate so that you maintain proper protection.

Tony Finau: All In at Home and On the Green

Coming from humble beginnings, professional golfer Tony Finau has not forgotten his roots or the true source of the blessings he enjoys. He carries with him the hopes and dreams of the people who made sacrifices to help him arrive where he is at today. Recognizing that on the golf course he is a representative of Jesus Christ and a conduit of His light, Finau also knows that when he goes home at the end of a tournament, he is going home to what is most important. On this week’s episode, we talk about why he is determined to not take anything for granted.

"Sometimes that person that He wants me to be isn't the person that I want to be. But as you pray, these things, they can coexist. Your will turns to His and you can start to do some cool things. You start to see your life change in a way that you would never imagine because you have prayed often enough to know that He's got a better plan for you than then you have for yourself."

Making Diversity, Equity and Inclusion A Cornerstone of Your Organization

Making Diversity, Equity and Inclusion A Cornerstone of Your Organization

Leo Harmon shares his top resource materials with our listeners (50:20):

I'd like to share a couple of good books that I've read this year that deal with the structure of inequity and how it has a real deleterious impact on society. One would be Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. There's another book called The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee which really talks about how  zero-sum outcomes in society really bring everyone down. And if we can expand the pie, we can have a much more prosperous society. One of the books I've read from one of our consultants, Andres Tapia,  The Five Disciplines of Inclusive Leaders, has been really instructive in helping with my thought process. Andres has been a thought leader in this space for a long time and does a lot of good work.

And then there are lots of websites that are just chock full of data around a lot of these items. So the Society for Human Resource Management,  Korn Ferry,  McKinsey has done a ton of work around DEI initiatives. As well as Boston Consulting. You know, all of those folks have done a good job. And so if you, if you truly value this work and think it can be valuable to your organization,  those would be some of the action items I would leave with you in order to better increase your framework and your thought process around these initiatives.
