Legends Podcast #647; Blade (1998)
Legends of Halloween continues with more vampire hunting action, this time coutesy of Marvel Comics! Before Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000), before Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), and before Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003), director Stephen Norrington launched Marvel to the big screen with his blood-drenched take on the daywalking half-vampire Blade. Played by Wesley Snipes, the film also stars Stephen Dorff as the villanous Deacon Frost and Kris Kristofferson as Blade’s mentor and armorer, Whistler. The film was a commercial success, spawning two sequels and a TV series, as well as setting up the template for the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to come. With an MCU installment on the way starring Mahershala Ali, we’re turning the clocks back 25 years to see if Blade still looks sharp!

Chad Bushnell: 4th Generation Cowboy & Singer-Songwriter
Blade (1998)
"Blade" left a mark on every '90s teen—the music, the fashion, the detailed breakdown of the vampire economy—but many forget it also kicked off Marvel's string of cinematic success. It was darker than any superhero film we'd ever seen, and it had a sense of humor.
With a blazing fast origin story and immediate action, this movie had our attention from the jump, inspiring conversations about the proper way for vampires to age, Wesley Snipes' fighting style, whether vampires should have a living wage, and how an ancient temple ends up in Detroit.
In this episode, Big D volunteers to get "gothed up." Ash explains her undying attraction to Stephen Dorff, and Gene details how vampires are born. The Shat Crew also ranks the four bloodsucking movies it's covered so far: "Blade," "The Lost Boys," "Interview with the Vampire," "From Dusk Till Dawn," and "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

Pop Rocket Ep. 195 A Star is Born
This week gay America received so much, but in particular, A Star is Born starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who also directed the movie. Guy, Wynter, Karen & Margaret--aka the full panel--got a chance to watch, cry, and be torn apart by the story of a lady who gained the world, but lost the man that she loves.
On this episode, we go over the history of this film and all the remakes, share predictions on whether The Academy will hand out statues to Lady Gaga and/or Bradley Cooper, or if they'll have to settle for the less-prestigious adulation from foreign journalists. Plus, Karen pushes back on Sam Adams's Slate article, which argues that "the movie's battle between rock and pop, authenticity and artifice, and art and commerce is outdated at best."
All Abouts
Wynter is all about the new Halloween starring Jamie Lee Curtis and the kerfuffle over Curtis's views on gun ownership on Fox News.
Karen is all about NBC's new primetime airplane sci-fi thriller, Manifest.
Margaret is all about the Twitter beef between Lana Del Rey and Azealia Banks over rapper Ye formerly known as Kanye West's MAGA-ness.
Guy is all about Katmai National Park & Preserve's Fat Bear Week competition.
That's My Jam
Karen - Barbara Streisand - Evergreen (Love Theme from "A Star is Born" 1976)
Wynter - Lady Gaga - Why Did You Do That? (A Star is Born Soundtrack)
Margaret - Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow (The Wizard of Oz: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).
Guy - Cher - Waterloo
With Guy Branum, Karen Tongson, Wynter Mitchell-Rohrbaugh, and Margaret Wappler.

Ep.38 Point Blank (1967) Vs. Payback (1999)
Two movies based on The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark brought Westlake's most famous character, Parker, to the silver screen, but they wouldn't be actually called Parker. Westlake famously protected the character and the name Parker wouldn't be used until after his death when Jason Statham starred in a movie title after the titular character.
Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin starring as Walker/Parker in a very ethereal adaptation of the novel alongside Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Caroll O'Connor, and John Vernon was the first to adapt the novel, although now in a contemporary late 60's setting. Near the dawn of the millennium Mel Gibson would star in another contemporary take on the novel in Payback (1999) co-starring Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, David Paymer, Deborah Kara Unger, William Devane, Lucy Liu, Kris Kristofferson, and James Coburn.
While adapting the same material, these two films are very different. Invasion of the Remake is the only place where Lee Marvin will be fighting Mel Gibson to see which is the better Parker.
This episode is dedicated in the memory of Darwin Cooke who passed away only two days prior to the recording of this episode. He adapted many of the Parker novels into graphic novel form and did them with a passion for the character that may have only been rival to that of Westlake himself. He will be missed.
We don't ask for money for the podcast currently but if you enjoyed this episode donate a few bucks to the American or Canadian Cancer Society. In Darwin Cooke's own words "F*ck Cancer!", so let's help put an end to it. Thanks.
