    Trash Fishing with Eddie Olschanski

    Trash Fishing with Eddie Olschanski

Eddie Olschanski is on a mission. Five days a week, year-round, Eddie can be seen fishing for trash in his kayak on the Cuyahoga River in the Flats. Outfitted with just a life jacket, a trash grabber, and garbage bags, Eddie and his volunteers have plucked over 50,000 lbs of trash from the shipping canal, the last place the trash can be removed before it drains into Lake Erie. Eddie founded Trash Fish CLE in 2017 to keep our lake clean, educate people about plastic pollution, and encourage people to get out and enjoy the water. For this episode, we joined Eddie on the river, along with two recruitments, Laura and Cheri. Join us as we hear what drives Eddie to do this dirty work, how he feels about "nurdles," and what Cleveland needs to do to rid our river of trash.

EP 09 - The Art of Fog-Catching, Salmon Rights, and Pollution in Lake Erie

EP 09 - The Art of Fog-Catching, Salmon Rights, and Pollution in Lake Erie

In this episode, Shelby and Anton cover the unusual art of fog-catching, issues surrounding the rights of salmon, and what regulations are in place to prevent pollution in Lake Erie.

Segment 1: With climate change, droughts are more common than they used to be. All over the world people are getting creative with their climate solutions--including Peruvians who have mastered the art of fog-catching.

Segment 2: Do fish have rights? Anton discusses a lawsuit that declared salmon have the inherent right to exist and thrive in their native lands. Hopefully this sets a precedent for more environmental protective policy!

Segment 3: Shelby highlights a case, that originated in Toledo, Ohio, where a federal judge struck down the notion that Lake Erie has rights. How can we keep the Lake Erie bill of rights alive? How do we protect our environment? Shelby and Anton discuss solutions.

Connecting Disability to… crossing the Great Lakes
Water scares many people. Our guest, Mike Shoreman, has conquered this fear. Many people know him as the Unbalanced Paddleboarder. In August, Mike became the first person with disabilities to paddle board across all of the Great Lakes. In this conversation, he talks about why he decided to do this, how crossing the Great Lakes resembles a mental health journey and the pros and cons of being called “inspirational.” He also tries to counsel Meagan through aquatic anxiety. Episode 36 - Halloween!!!

In honor of Halloween, we get spooky this week.

Taylor tells stories of the Black Dog of Lake Erie. Is it out for revenge on the uncaring sailors who allowed it to drown in the Welland Canal?

And Tanner relates the tales of ghostly happenings around the 1873 sinking of the steamer Ironsides in Lake Michigan, and Connecticut's steamship Atlantic disaster from 1846.

Does the spirit of young Henry Valentine still cry for help from passing mariners in Lake Michigan?  Does the bell of the Atlantic still toll out in mourning for the lives she lost?

The Accidental Reef and Other Ecological Odysseys in the Great Lakes

The Accidental Reef and Other Ecological Odysseys in the Great Lakes

In The Accidental Reef and Other Ecological Odysseys in the Great Lakes, Lynne Heasley illuminates an underwater world with a ferocious industrial history. Despite these pressures, the great lakes remain wondrous and worthy of care. From its first scene in a benighted river, where lake sturgeon thrash and spawn, this powerful book takes readers on journeys through the Great Lakes alongside fish and fishers, scuba divers and scientists, toxic pollutants and threatened communities, oil pipelines and invasive species, and Indigenous peoples and federal agencies.

With dazzling illustrations from Glenn Wolff, The Accidental Reef helps us know the Great Lakes in new ways and grapple with the legacies and alternative futures that come from their abundance of natural wealth. Suffused with curiosity, empathy, and wit, The Accidental Reef will not fail to astonish and inspire. As John Hartig puts it, “Heasley leads the reader to see, know, and understand these freshwater seas from different perspectives [which are] essential to developing a stewardship ethic.”

Lynne Heasley is a professor in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at Western Michigan University, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is also the author of A Thousand Pieces of Paradise: Landscape and Property in the Kickapoo Valley and a coeditor of Border Flows: A Century of the Canadian-American Water Relationship.

    My First Crossing

    My First Crossing

Turbulent is how I would describe my teen years. I started down one path, going to college with all the uncertainty and trepidation leaving home trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life unaware I would do a lot of different things before I finished. In fact, I’m still doing different things.

Few have you probably aren’t old enough to remember the draft as a participant. The draft was the Damocles sword hanging over every male who was 18 years old. Nixon had dropped all the draft deferments like going to college or and I’m half joking here being rich and white.

At eighteen I was faced with an important decision. Did I love my country enough to die for it?

The counterculture was roaring. Four dead in Ohio just happened. I knew at least five guys who had gone to Vietnam and two were killed.

My friends were in a band. I am not musical in any way, but I love music and I am married to a great musician. And I mean great Paulette McWilliams. I added a link to her new album A Woman’s Story. We all talked about if we were drafted, we would go to Canada. Canada was just across Lake Erie from us in Bay Village Ohio.

    You are a sailor.

Querus Hamlin about Mapping Nutrients in the Great Lakes

Querus Hamlin about Mapping Nutrients in the Great Lakes

On this week’s The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Quercus Hamlin. Quercus is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences working under Drs. David Hyndman, Anthony Kendall, and Sherry Martin in the Michigan State University Hydrogeology Lab. He is entering his 6th year with the group after working as an undergraduate researcher and earning his Master’s degree this past spring. Quercus works on water quality issues from nutrient loading in the Great Lakes region. “Nutrients” refer to the chemical elements nitrogen and phosphorus, which are both essential to plant growth. However, excess nutrients in water can lead to a suite of problems affecting human and biological health, as well as economic industries like tourism and fish. Nutrient water quality problems are present throughout the Great Lakes and have been particularly alarming in Lake Erie, where massive harmful algal blooms have led to drinking water bans in Toledo, Ohio. Quercus’s work primarily includes mapping nutrient inputs in time and space across the Great Lakes Region. His maps answer the question: If we went to any spot in the Great Lakes Region, approximately how much nitrogen is your septic tank discharging? Approximately how much fertilizer was applied to that cornfield? These maps, called SENSEmap, or the Spatially Explicit Nutrient Source Estimate map, are provided to watershed managers and planners through the Tipping Point Planner. He is currently leading a team of undergraduates to expand SENSEmap to the full extent of the Great Lakes states and Ontario, Canada for increased management and scientific use. Quercus also studies nitrate in groundwater across Michigan, a form of nitrogen that is associated with blue baby syndrome and cancer when ingested routinely from drinking water.
