Currently, Lake serves as Executive Producer and Judge of the Emmy Award Winning nationally syndicated daytime legal show, Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court. Sharp–witted and opinionated, Lake helps litigants resolve legal issues involving paternity using DNA results. While presiding over a range of emotionally charged cases, Lake’s powerful persona resonates as she provides the perfect blend of inspiration and tough love with her no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is advice and analysis of each case. Lake further explores the dynamics of complicated relationships in her book Girl! Let Me Tell You…Advice on Life and Love for Single Successful Women.

Building the Next Generation Construction Industry from the Ground Up

Lauren Lake grew up on her father’s construction sites. By the time she entered a university entrepreneur accelerator program, other industries had adopted the latest in technology like wireless Internet access and iPads. Her father’s business hadn’t changed much at all. Lake teamed up with other child of the hard-hat economy to bring the future to an industry stuck in the past. What started out as a two day exercise turned into Bridgit, a start-up success story that’s grown an average 313% over 5 years.

The Construction Industry isn’t Building its Own Future

The construction industry is one of the least innovative, and least productive, in the world today, reporting, “The reasons for this narrow focus vary, but some players hesitate to expand into any other area because they have traditionally struggled to deploy new tools at scale, limiting their impact.”

Lake and fellow Next36 student Mallorie Brodie aimed to make a big impact. Delicately. Without any preconceived notions about what site managers needed, the pair went “crane hunting”. They literally searched the skies for cranes to discover where the job sites — and future customers — were. Once they found them, they arrived unannounced and armed with just two things: a note pad and a box of donuts. What they walked away with was the knowledge necessary to build a Minimal Viable Product the industry needed, and what they needed to kickstart the financing of their fledgling business.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

As Bridgit grew, Lake and Brodie had to make a decision: which co-founder would tackle the CEO role, and which would act as the Chief Operating Officer. Lake took the latter. She acknowledges Bridgit made many mistakes along the way, from planning to pricing, but each stumble taught the 20-something entrepreneurs how to make great strides in both the start-up world, and the world of heavy equipment.

Bâtir le secteur de la construction de prochaine génération

Lauren Lake a grandi sur les chantiers de construction de son père. Lorsqu’elle a entrepris un programme universitaire d’accélérateurs d’entreprises, d’autres secteurs avaient adopté les plus récentes technologies, comme l’accès Internet sans fil et les iPad. L’entreprise de son père n’avait pas beaucoup changé. Mme Lake a fait équipe avec une autre enfant de l’économie de la construction pour faire souffler un vent d’avenir sur un secteur qui était enlisé dans le passé. Ce qui a commencé par un exercice d’une durée de deux jours est devenu Bridgit, une entreprise en démarrage qui a connu un grand succès, avec une croissance moyenne de 313 % en cinq ans.

Le secteur de la construction ne bâtit pas son propre avenir

Selon McKinsey, le secteur de la construction est l’un des moins novateurs et des moins productifs au monde à l’heure actuelle. McKinsey affirme  : « Les raisons de cette vision restreinte varient, mais certains joueurs hésitent à étendre leurs activités à d’autres domaines parce qu’ils ont toujours eu de la difficulté à déployer de nouveaux outils à grande échelle, limitant ainsi leur incidence. »

Mme Lake et sa compagne d’études de  Next36, Mallorie Brodie, avaient l’intention d’avoir une incidence déterminante. Délicatement. Sans s’embarrasser d’idées préconçues quant aux besoins des gestionnaires de chantier, les deux femmes sont parties à la « chasse aux grues ». Elles ont littéralement cherché des grues dans le ciel pour découvrir où se trouvaient les chantiers et les futurs clients. Une fois qu’elles les ont trouvés, elles sont arrivées sans préavis, armées de deux choses seulement : un bloc-notes et une boîte de beignes. Elles ont quitté les chantiers avec les connaissances nécessaires pour créer un produit minimum viable dont le secteur avait besoin et ce dont elles avaient besoin pour donner le coup d’envoi au financement de leur nouvelle entreprise.

Leçons apprises en cours de route

Au fil de la croissance de Bridgit, Mmes Lake et Brodie ont dû prendre une décision : quelle cofondatrice exercerait le rôle de chef de la direction et laquelle agirait à titre de chef de l’exploitation. Mme Lake a choisi d’agir comme chef de l’exploitation. Elle reconnaît que Bridgit a commis de nombreuses erreurs en cours de route, qu’il s’agisse de planification ou de fixation des prix, mais chacune de ces erreurs a montré aux entrepreneures dans la vingtaine comment faire de grands pas dans le monde des entreprises en démarrage et de l’équipement lourd.
