    From Lagos to New York: An Associate’s Remarkable Journey

    John is joined by Temi Omilabu, an associate in Quinn Emanuel’s New York office.  They discuss her remarkable journey from her childhood in Lagos, Nigeria, to becoming a trial lawyer at Quinn Emanuel, including the adjustments she had to make moving from Lagos to first Florida then Texas, her years at Case Western University where she earned her Master’s degree in Bioethics and her work after graduating for two global health-focused nonprofits.  They also discuss her love of advocacy and storytelling that led her to law school, her internship in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and her post-law school fellowship in the General Counsel’s Office at Yale.  Finally, they discuss how Temi’s interest in litigation lead her to Quinn Emanuel’s New York office,  where she immediately started working on depositions and on multi-district litigation and went to trial in a pro bono case within her first year with the firm.

    Carl Ficks has a fascinating story of how he transitioned from a high-pressure law career to establishing his company "No Surrender". Carl went from litigating in the courtroom to helping other lawyers and professionals to reclaim their wellness.  Carl’s mission in life is to be in service to his family, friends, colleagues and the community, where he leads by example, keeps his word and lives an empathetic, passionate, honest and authentic life.

    In our chat today we talked about Carl's passion for running and cycling and how staying fit helped him perform his best at work. He offers some great tips on how to get started on the well-being journey and staying committed to yourself when under pressure from all your other responsibilities and time is precious.

    Carl is one of those really genuine people who is making a difference. He writes regular blogs and is available for speaking engagements.

    Rashaun Weaver, who plead guilty to killing 18-year-old college student Tessa Majors, was sentenced to 14 years to life this past week. As the defense attorney on this case, Jeff shares the details. Next, Jeff talks about how even democrats are turning on Joe Biden after his disastrous press conference. Later, in the second segment of Beyond the Legal Limit, Jeff shares stories about his first job as a lawyer.

    Pamela Davidson, Esq. is a Director of Legal Recruiting with Legal Counsel, a legal recruiting firm focusing on placements with law firms and corporate legal departments. Prior to joining Special Counsel, Pamela was the Senior Assistant Dean of the Career Resources Department at Western State College of Law, an ABA-approved law school. in that position, Pamela worked with hundreds of law students, recent graduates, and alumni, providing support as they achieved their career goals. Pamela organized workshops, programs and events on topics ranging from resume creation and interview skills to alternative (JD preferred) career paths. She also provided extensive individualized coaching on salary negotiation, business etiquette, networking, professional development, and other essential job-related skills. Prior to joining Western State, Pamela was a legal recruiter in Orange County, placing candidates with law firms and corporate legal departments.
