#027 Live Out What You're Selling

#027 Live Out What You're Selling

    Episode Highlights, Links and Resources:

During the opening, Jeremie and Steve discuss managing time and being more strategic with time. They mention the 5 Gears and several of the tools that help with communication and to make sure we are productive but also present with people in a healthy way. GiANT helps people become more Relationally Intelligent. They mention "thinkers" and "feelers" and the differences in personality. They have developed powerful tools to help people understand themselves and each other. You can access these tools by going to GiANT.

Jeremie and Steve talk about Peace during their introduction conversation. Have you ever thought about how Peace affects your relationships? How do you be at peace with yourself and with those around you? No amount of business success helps when you're not at peace with the relationships in your life.

Jeremie and Steve are available for a Peace Index or Communication Code Keynote at your next event or training. To book them, please contact Tracy Rader.

Masi Willis is our guest today. She understands people dynamics as much as anyone. If you would like to talk to Masi about working with you as an individual, your team or your organization. Reach out to her on LinkedIn. And check out her website to see all that she offers. The Mason Effect.

Masi mentions the Know Yourself to Lead Yourself tool. This tool transformed her as a leader. She has worked on knowing her tendencies so she can see where she undermines her influence. If you want to access these tools: Get your Pro account HERE.
Masi shared a piece of wisdom she has heard before. "What you win your teams WITH, is what you will win them TO." She emphasizes the need to live out what your saying within your organization. The culture within an organization needs to be living out their values.  In other words, LIVE what you're selling!

So, if you are leading an organization, "What are you selling to your employees?" It's not a one-and done. It must be an on-going living out of your values.

    Our favorite episode quotes:
Steve, "Work can be incredible, but if a key relationship is off, no amount of business success brings peace when misalignment in key relationships is there."
Jeremie, "When I am at peace, I'm really good. When I'm not at Peace, I'm really average. Peace is power."
Masi, "What you win your teams WITH, is what you will win them TO."

Episode Takeaway from Steve:  You only have finite time and you must prioritize what is most important.  How do I disappoint people who want more of my time, in a healthy way?
Episode Takeaway from Jeremie:  Peace is power! If you want to empower people, you must have internal peace. Fight being at peace.

    018 Mindset

    018 Mindset

Thoughts drive actions, that drive habits, which result in outcomes.

How you think about yourself impacts your actions. Are you secure, confident and humble as a leader? Do you know what you're good at and the value you can add to your team? And are you passing that mindset onto your people so they can reach their potential too?

How you think about your team determines how you lead your team. Don't limit your ability to lead them by not believing in them. As a leader we need to believe in the best of everyone we're leading and we have to see their potential and call them up in that.

The beauty of thoughts is that they are a choice. Your mindset is a muscle. The more you build it, the stronger it becomes.  So, think about how you think.

If someone on your team continues to have a negative mindset or attitude, a healthy leader must have the difficult conversation of calling them up on that behavior. Listen to this episode in its entirety to see how Kevin handles those conversations.

    017 The Communication Code

    017 The Communication Code

What would have to happen for every person on a team to become relationally intelligent? The Communication Code book and tool will transform the way you communicate with those that you work with and those at home.

Jeremie gives the five "C's" within the Communication Code:
    Care
    Celebrate
    Clarify
    Collaborate
    Critique

Each personality or Voice tends to use a certain code. Once you know the other person's code, communication becomes much more successful between the two of you. It creates healthy two-way communication. Pro tip: it's okay to ask the other person what they are wanting from a conversation. We can help one another communicate in a way where we can hear them and also feel heard ourselves.

Many organizations are using this book as a Book Club read or a company-wide learning opportunity. You can get copies at Amazon. (If you're looking to buy in bulk of 25+ copies, reach out to Tracy at the email below and she is happy to help you get a discount).

    016 Your Natural Strengths

    016 Your Natural Strengths

Imagine a world where you get to work in your natural strengths most of the time. To be energized and fulfilled according to your skillset and your natural strengths would be a dream come true. Chris Ediger introduces us to the 70:30 Principle. This gives leaders insight for understanding  why they are sometimes drained within their job and at other times energized. It gives a practical framework to adjust to be able to have a healthy balance.

Chris gives a great exercise to try. On one side of a piece of paper write down a list of your natural strengths - those things that bring you energy and are your "sweet spots". On the other side of the page, write down those things that are draining - those things that you have to really work at, that are not natural to you. Now take inventory of how much of your work day is spent on each. The goal is to spend about 70% of your time in your strengths and unconscious competencies, with only about 30% in those things that are not natural to you. Now, don't go and quit your job if this is off balance. Instead, start making a plan as to how you can start making adjustments to get in a place where you are working in the areas that most suit you. It may be that if you work on a team, you all will be able to do this exercise together and move around responsibilities to make sure each member's strengths are really being maximized.

Chris Ediger mentioned that he loves working with craft breweries. If you are in that industry and would like to reach out to Chris, you can find him on LinkedIn

015 Intentionality in All Circles of Influence

On this episode, we continue our conversation and discovery of The 5 Circles of Influence Tool. This is a great self-reflection tool. Are you intentional in every area of influence in your life? From yourself, to your family, your team, your organization as a whole and your community. Leaders can't be compartmentalized. We must be sure to live out our values in every area of impact that we have.

Our guest, Annree Wogan, shares her perspective on how this tool has opened her eyes to her own areas of growth. She now shares this tool with her many clients in the BioTech industry and other industries she focuses on.

    014 Your Circles of Influence

    014 Your Circles of Influence

The 5 Circles of Influence are: self, family, team, organization and community. Many of us can be intentional in one or two of these areas when we take the time and effort, but it is very difficult to become intentional in all five. Jon Sakarias Liknes and Johan Haugstad of Norway open up about how they are using this tool in their own lives and to help teams get healthy.

Johan gives a great tip using the acronym HALT. Be sure to listen and learn about what this stands for and how he is better able to take responsibility for himself using this reminder.

Thane shares this tool as a way to make sure we focus on the right things at the right time. 009 Where do you land

    009 Where do you land

On this episode, Masi Willis walks us through a "word cloud" of each quadrant of the Support Challenge Matrix in order to see where we land as leaders when it comes to the way our people experience us on the other side of us.

Listen to the descriptive words she uses to see if you land more in the protector, liberator, abdicator or dominator quadrant.

One of the most humble things you can do as a leader is to become self-aware and to take a good, hard look in the mirror.

    008 Support and Challenge

    008 Support and Challenge

As we continue to explore the Support/Challenge Matrix, it's time to plot ourselves on this tool. Print off or copy this tool so you have it in front of you visually. Review each quadrant. Now think of yourself as a leader to your team at work. Where would you place yourself on this tool? If you're a parent, where would you put yourself?

It's very hard to see ourselves clearly, so if you're brave enough (and ready for the truth), print this tool off and let everyone on your team put a dot on the quadrant where they feel you land. How do they experience you as a leader? And do their perspectives match how you saw yourself to them?

If you find that you land in a quadrant other than the liberate quadrant, do the hard work of asking yourself why. "Why do I tend to give challenge but little support?" or "Why do I give support but have a hard time challenging my people? or "Why have I abdicated my role as a leader and I offer little support and little challenge".

Humble leaders become self-aware and then make the necessary changes of growth.

    006 Lead Yourself First

    006 Lead Yourself First

The people you lead know all of your idiosyncrasies, your tendencies, inconsistencies. After all, they are with you most every day. But the question is, do you? Do you know the little things that undermine your impact and influence on those you lead or have you chosen to ignore them or make excuses for them?

Amy Mast comes back this episode with a part-two to walk us through the Know Yourself to Lead Yourself tool. Take a look at the visual graphic tool in the link below and work your way through the tendency log. You'll be glad you did.

    005 Do You Know Yourself

    005 Do You Know Yourself

It's miserable having to follow someone who you have little respect for. They may be in a position of power or a role of leadership, and because of their role, you comply. But isn't it so much more enjoyable to follow someone who you admire, respect and feel they are worthy of being followed.

A lack of self-awareness is a sure fire way to lose followers. When a leader expects things out of their people but they aren't leading by example, hypocrisy turns everyone sour and they do everything in their power to move on to someone they want to follow instead of have to follow.

In this episode, Amy Mast walks us through a simple yet powerful leadership tool that allows leaders to look in the mirror in order to notice the tendencies and patterns that undermine their influence.

Check out the Know Yourself To Lead Yourself Tool and let it do it's refining work on you.

    #023 Change Within

    #023 Change Within

    Episode Highlights, Links and Resources:

In the introduction, Steve and Jeremie discuss  Vision. Do you have a Vision problem? Do others have Vision for you that is higher than your Vision for yourself? Are the opinions of others dictating your Vision for yourself? Steve mentioned that the primary responsibility of a leader is to set direction and cast Vision. Dream outside what you think is possible outside of your to-do list.  Five years from now, what are the things that you want to see happen?

Our guest on this episode is Dr. Jessica Rimmer. Jessica runs a GiANT agency called Solomon. To learn more or do reach out for her consulting services, check out her website.

Jeremie asked Jessica what she sees working in businesses right now. She responded that people are tired of the conflict in the world. It's an important time for leaders to become healthy. There is an urgency around getting healthy and staying healthy. Leaders must think for themselves, own their point of view and be proactive in leadership. She sees the importance of helping leaders focus on what really matters from a sense of peace.  People don't have reserves yet, so if they are going to be able to function they have to work to get healthy.

    Our favorite episode quotes:
Steve, "The primary responsibility of a leader is to set direction and cast Vision."
Jeremie, "Dusting off Vision is really, really important. Use the 5 year mark. Do the work instead of letting someone else encroach on your vision."
Jessica, " It was only in the doing it that I figured out why my life needed to be reordered."

Jessica mentioned the "Self-Preservation" tool. Learn the details of that tool here.
Jeremie mentions a 1st Gear and a 2nd Gear strategy. Learn about the 5 Gears tool here

#016 The Why's of What We Do

#016 The Why's of What We Do

    Episode Highlights, Links and Resources:

In the introduction, Steve mentions that loss of integrity and honesty can bring a leader down, and people lose trust. People must know a leader is competent, but integrity and honesty must be in tact as well.

Thank you to Victoria from Omaha, Nebraska for this episode's audience question:
"My team keeps getting bogged down by tasks that aren't important to our vision. How do I get them to understand the priorities of their tasks?"
Jeremie: If you're the leader, you get to set the tone. Jeremie mentioned GiANT CEO, Bronson Taylor who works through a BLITZ system of conducting team meetings. Make sure to share the strategy and then communicate. You must have relational trust for your people to want to follow you.
Steve: Whenever there is an issue on a team, you have to be prepared to recognize that you're either looking in the mirror at your leadership or you have abdicated leadership of that team. You are responsible for what the team prioritizes. You have to create ways to  lift your head out of the details and look at the big picture.

Interview with GiANT Guide, Andrew Robinson:
Why do you do what you do, Andrew?
Andrew says he does what he does because of the impact it has had on himself - his marriage, his parenting and at work. It also has a financial impact on his clients. They get to win! It can change a company's culture. He can also set his own schedule so he gets more time for his family and for self-care.

Steve says the reason he does what he does is scalable influence, making a difference in the world by empowering others. That is what a 100X Leaders is. Steve mentions The 100X Leader book. To order that book from Amazon, go here.  It's about legacy at this stage of life.

Jeremie says the reason he does what he does is that he gets to use business as a platform for influence. He gets to partner with people for liberation and multiplication.

Why is coaching a good business and would you recommend it? Why?
Andrew says to be a great leadership coach he sees some common factors in those who are successful at it: generosity and courage to do things that are uncomfortable; and curiosity that stems from humility.

    Our favorite episode quotes:
Jeremie, "Let the world fund us to influence it. If it's not world class, then it's not good enough".
Steve, "It's really about legacy at this stage of the game."
Andrew,  "I'm challenging leaders to focus more on the process than the outcome."

In the wrap-up Jeremie mentions his new book, The Peace Index. Order your copy here.

Episode Takeaway from Steve:  There's something about being part of a tribe who wants to make a difference. If leadership is influence, then leadership is legacy.
Episode Takeaway from Jeremie: We have a phrase in GiANT, "We're just getting started." We are celebrating 10 years of building but we feel like we are just getting started.
