MWV Episode 69 (audio only) - Richard Cogdell - Bacterial Photosynthesis

MWV Episode 69 (audio only) - Richard Cogdell - Bacterial Photosynthesis

Richard Cogdell is the Director of the Institute for Molecular Cell and Systems Biology at the University of Glasglow, Scotland.

Richard was led to a career in studying bacterial photosynthesis by a desire to learn and understand basic photosynthesis, he "wanted to know how natured worked."

In 1995, Richard's research group, in collaboration with others, used protein crystallography to determine the three dimensional structure of a light-harvesting complex from the purple bacterium, Rhodospsedomas acidophilia.

This breakthrough led to two key elements in the understanding of bacterial photosynthesis. One, once you have established the structure you can understand its function. Two, this view of a light-harvesting complex attracted an interdisciplinary group of scientists from the fields such as chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology.

Richard's current challenge is to take the process of photosynthesis (using solar energy to make a fuel) and apply it to the world's energy needs in a sustainable manner.

To do this, Richard says "you must break photosynthesis down to it's four most basics steps", absorb solar energy, concentrate it, break it apart and make a fuel. These are the steps that must be duplicated if they are going to be successful at creating sustainable, renewable energy.

The first two steps, says Cogdell, are like a solar battery (easy to recreate). The hard part is finding ways to use renewable energy to drive the chemistry. That's the process Richard spends most of his time working on and he uses the concept of an artificial leaf to help explain this complex process to the public.

According to Cogdell, if the current rate of investment continues, it will be approximately five to six years before we see a small pilot system that demonstrates the feasibility of the process.

Richard emphasizes that if mankind wants to survive, we must find a way to convert solar energy into fuel because when fossil fuels run out so do we.

Autoline This Week #1626: We Try Harder

Autoline This Week #1626: We Try Harder
In 1963 Avis Rent-a-Car came up with iconic “We Try Harder” slogan, which it has carried ever since. But it also seems to be the perfect phrase to describe the current race for the number one selling car in America. After years of playing not just second but third fiddle to the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, Nissan has unveiled its striking new Altima and believes this car is prepared to finally challenge that number one slot. That’s why John McElroy and Autoline go on-the-road this week to Nashville, Tennessee to visit the home of Nissan Americas and to talk with the team in charge of taking Altima to number 1.

Alternative Fuel Cars: Has a Chicken-and-Egg Dilemma Stalled the Mass Market?

Alternative Fuel Cars: Has a Chicken-and-Egg Dilemma Stalled the Mass Market?

Electric and biofuel-powered cars offer solutions for a carbon-constrained world, but has early excitement about alternative fuel vehicles fizzled prior to the July 1 start date for Australia's carbon tax? Before the rubber really hits the road and hybrids and "plug-in" cars become mainstream, there’s still a myriad of issues to be addressed. Infrastructure is one, while research shows some biofuels may generate more problems than they solve. The shift to alternative fuel cars must come, says John Sterman, the Michael J Crouch Visiting Professor at the Australian School of Business, along with many other alternative modes of transport.

[[BRING ON THE NIGHT]] (I Dreamt About A Two Minute Lifetime)

[[BRING ON THE NIGHT]] (I Dreamt About A Two Minute Lifetime)
The vision for this show was brought about by a dream I had in which I vividly remember seeing the following words written on a strip of torn out paper; "She was told that two minutes would be the duration of her lifetime, time jumping is allowed" I awoke and thought about this dream state message I had just received. I wondered who "she" was. I wondered if the dream had anything to do with the dream I had experienced over 20 years ago, in which I was browsing through cd's inside a futuristic record/music store and I picked up a cd titled "Statedlife" which I perceived as a mystical communiqué telling me that I would make music and that I would call it "Statedlife" I tried to collect songs for this show that expressed elements of my own thoughts, feelings and hopes about the future. I always try to imbue all my emotions and thoughts into each program. I incline toward having a connection to a theme when I play music. Sometimes it is a connection within the sound and feel of a song, sometimes it it the title of the song itself. I'd like to share this wonderful podcast with you, complete with track times, because I believe that the universe can send us messages through numbers, as well. I try to be open to messages from elsewhere, from the universe, realizing that if I can even begin to comprehend the meanings behind any random wisdom or subconscious intel I receive then maybe I can begin to cultivate my destiny on a more productive level. 00:00:03 ······· Goldmund ··································· My Neighborhood 00:04:53 ······· Marconi Union ······························ A Temporary Life 00:08:50 ······· Sigur Rós ···································· Sé Lest (The Train) 00:11:47 ······· Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook ··················· Finally II 00:13:13 ······· Jamin Winans ······································ The City Surf 00:15:38 ······· The Smiths ····································· I Know It's Over 00:21:16 ······· Sleepyard ································ Rainy Day Vibrations 00:22:15 ······· Johnny Cash ····················································· Hurt 00:25:46 ······· Squarepusher ································· Lambic 9 Poetry 00:29:15 ······· Everything But The Girl ·································· Single 00:33:43 ······· Helios ············································· The Toy Garden 00:37:26 ······· Amberhaze ······································· There Is A Way 00:42:21 ······· Project Skyward ···································· Distant Blue 00:45:52 ······· Ulrich Schnauss ·························· Shine [Mint Remix] 00:50:51 ······· Epic45 ········································ The Stars In Spring 00:54:27 ······· Talk Talk ····························· Living In Another World 00:58:36 ······· Zwicker ····················· Sleepwalking feat. Watch how Illustrator and After Effects can be used together to create organic animations using simple masks copied and pasted between the two applications. Also see how the Twirl tool in Illustrator can be used to distort paths and make it look as if “tendrils” are growing outward. This all comes together in After Effects by setting the first vertex and ensuring your blended masks don’t flip inside out.

    Autoline #1438: Innocence Lost

    Autoline #1438: Innocence Lost
    Innocence Lost

There was a seismic shift 45 years ago. And as all change goes it was unwelcome at the time. So much in fact, that in a manner of fifteen short minutes it transformed a cultural hero to social pariah, all thanks to the innocence of choice.

But that's what happened on July 25, 1965 at the prestigious Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan plugged in, turned on and embraced the sound electric. The audience reaction was an early version of shock and awe. His fans became horrified that he had abandoned his acoustic legacy when he launched into an electric version of "Maggie's Farm." But in reality what they didn't know was that he was simply evolving as an artist as evidenced by the success of his beloved "Like A Rolling Stone," which had been recorded just days before the event. It was clear he was moving on.

For more than 100 years the internal combustion engine has driven the car. And though it continues to be tweaked and improved to the point where automotive's pioneers might not even recognize today's highly-efficient ICEs, evolution persists. We've been talking alternatives for years -- hybrids, PZEVs, Natural Gas and Hydrogen have all piqued our interest, but our muse has always been electrics. So much promise, so much promised, so much never delivered. But finally like Dylan, we're starting to move on...welcome to the world of the Nissan LEAF.

On this week's Autoline John McElroy travels to Tennessee -- a state that brought human evolution to the headlines last century -- to talk about the evolution of the car this century as the LEAF goes electric. John gets a deep dive on the car from Nissan Product Planner Mark Perry while marketing chief Jon Brancheau talks to him how they are rolling it out across the country. In addition, John drives the LEAF all around the city of Nashville and gives you his impressions of this first mass produced all-electric pioneer.
