Kate Winslet as Lee Miller in Lee

Kate Winslet as Lee Miller in Lee

Welcome back, and welcome to Season 2!

Yay! Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, I'm able to talk about LEE, Kate Winslet's film directed by Ellen Kuras, where Kate is real life WWII photojournalist Lee Miller.  NO SPOILERS in this podcast. I'm so lucky to be able to see this film 4 times at TIFF (2 times at the public viewings, and 2 times as press & industry). Should note that a reason I got in as press & industry is because of this acting podcast, ha ha. Extremely happy to have shared this world premiere viewing with my friend Brenda ( @kleoofdreams on Twitter), a fellow Winsletor and admirer of Kate's work.

What did Kate do for LEE? I talk about her preparations, education, and HARD WORK Kate did leading up to portraying Lee, how Kate uses her eyes and breath to let us see the atrocities that Lee sees, how she LISTENS to what is being said to her and the things around her, the physical "risks" that Kate takes, the parallels between the struggles (and eventual overcoming of these challenges) that both Lee Miller and Kate Winslet and its filmmakers endured just by being women, and the non-acting support Kate put into the film including funding Lee and supporting its actors including Andy Samberg. Oh, and forget Evan Peters' drunk acting in Mare of Easttown, let's admire Kate's drunk acting in Lee! ;)

And HELP! This film still needs a U.S. distributor. It definitely deserves one. Especially for this kind of film led by females. It's a worthy film to see: To learn history, its realities, the struggles and achievements of women, and more.

If you want to read my review of LEE, head over to my Twitter https://twitter.com/ahung  Thanks to Michelle Hughes on Facebook for helping me secure a ticket to the public screening.

LEE stars Kate Winslet, Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Marion Cotillard, Josh O'Connor, Andy Samberg & Noémie Merlant. To find out more about Lee Miller, go to the Lee Miller Archives https://leemiller.co.uk And yep, Brenda & I noticed Joe Anders right away, playing American GI Frank Kleeman.

Lee Miller: Die Frau in Hitlers Badewanne

Lee Miller: Die Frau in Hitlers Badewanne
Jahrhunderts.

    Man Ray

    Man Ray

Curator Romy Cockx talks to Danielle Radojcin about Man Ray’s journey from growing up as the son of working-class immigrants in Philadelphia to a towering giant of 20th Century image-making.

Man Ray was responsible for some of the most eye-catching photos of women in the 20th Century: Lee Miller’s floating lips, the glass tears of Kiki de Montparnasse, and portraits of fashion stars Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli to name but a few.

MoMu, the Fashion Museum in Antwerp, is currently running an exhibition showcasing Man Ray’s relationship with fashion, from his photo editorials for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, to the gowns worn by some of the famous women who modelled them. Cockx talks about what influenced Man Ray, from Paul Poiret to Marcel Duchamp and the Marquis de Sade, and the designers he in turn has influenced, including Phoebe Philo and Martin Margiela.

"Here is Vogue, in Spite of it All!": Audrey Withers, Lee Miller & WWII

"Here is Vogue, in Spite of it All!": Audrey Withers, Lee Miller & WWII

When you think of Vogue magazine, what comes to mind? Colorful, shiny covers? Supermodels? Luxurious clothes and accessories?

But, did you know that British Vogue was an important cog in the UK’s  defense machine during WWII? In the words of its legendary editor, Audrey Withers, “Here is Vogue, in spite of it all!” - and there was a lot to spite, indeed: nightly bombings, strict rations on all of life’s necessities, and constant destruction, fear, and loss. Yet Vogue persevered, becoming an important tool of government communication to women on the homefront, as well as a crucial instrument of war correspondence as it documented the horrors of German concentration camps, the first use of napalm as a weapon of chemical warfare, and the incredible violence of total warfare.

From wartime fashion to revolutionary female war correspondent, Lee Miller, who dared to scrub off the horrors of WWII in Hitler’s bathtub, Vogue was most definitely there - in spite of it all.
