December 1980, högt över Indiska oceanen. Nedsjunken i flygplansstolen sitter en förtvivlad sångerska från Skottland. Hennes korta frisyr är blonderad och kindbenen höga. Det som är mest framträdande just nu är dock dom mörka ringarna under ögonen.

Annie är helt slutkörd, men tankarna som snurrar i hennes huvud hindrar henne från att somna. Trots att hon bara är 26 år gammal oroar hon sig för att hennes artistkarriär är över, innan den knappt hunnit ta fart. Turnén i Australien har varit en mardröm. Annie inser motvilligt att rockbandet The Tourist, som sjunger i, fullständigt har kollapsat. 

Fastspänd i det trånga sätet, i den lilla kabinen, förstår Annie att hon behöver göra en radikal förändring. Innan hon hinner ångra sig vänder hon sig till sin pojkvän som sitter bredvid. Dave och Annie har varit ett passionerat kärlekspar i fyra år, lika länge som dom spelat musik ihop. 12 000 meter upp i luften förstår dock dom båda att det inte längre funkar. Dom är överens om att deras kemi är en kreativ urkraft som - om den får blomma fritt utan hinder - är ostoppbar. Men för att det ska bli möjligt, måste dom offra något.

När planet många timmar senare landar i ett gråmulet London har dom bestämt sig. Annie och Dave har gjort slut för att istället kunna satsa allt på sitt musikaliska partnerskap.

Songwriter and producer Dave Stewart drops in to discuss the new Stewart/Lindsey album Amitié, his many classic hits with Annie Lennox in Eurythmics, and his storied career in music. Dave also reflects on his collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Shakespeares Sister, and the importance of distraction in the writing process.

Ari Lennox leads with her heart, and developed her steady confidence over time. Growing up in Maryland, Lennox felt out of place, but everything changed when she moved to Washington D.C. “Life started getting fun after that,” says Lennox. Attending a primarily black school, Lennox no longer felt like an outsider, and was able to embrace her beauty in new ways. She eventually stopped using the word “black” altogether, and now affectionately refers to those who share her skin color as “chocolate.” The way Lennox expresses this word, and her overall appreciation for life, makes it impossible to ignore the love she has for herself and her culture.

Jennifer shares her story from her humble beginnings growing up in Arkansas to taking a step back from practicing law so she could start her family to coming back with a bang when she took a great in-house role at Lennox. Jennifer’s perspective was a breath of fresh air as she was incredibly honest, candid, and realistic. She shared advice like “trust your gut despite your desire to impress others” and “if something was a mistake, admit it and move on.” I’m so thankful to Jennifer for her time and I am so excited to share this interview with you all.
