    Enjoy Stuff: The Musical

Gotta sing, gotta dance! This week we look at a bunch of different musicals that the guys have Enjoyed through the years. It’s a rare Enjoy Stuff look at the stage with the evolution of musicals through the years and how they’ve changed. Plus, why Shua would ever be cast as Big Jule. No understudies needed for this week’s Enjoy Stuff!

The neon lights are bright and magic is in the air! Jay and Shua look back at decades of fun musicals.

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua and his wife have been revisiting the Harry Potter movies. The timing was right for them to even see a few at the Alamo Drafthouse with a pack of Potterheads. Jay is enjoying the new Disney+ series Ahsoka. While there are many aspects of the show that might go over the heads of anyone unfamiliar with Rebels or Clone Wars, it’s still got some pretty cool stuff.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

Jay has been updating a ton of locations from Marvel TV and movies, including all the (now canon) Spider-Man films. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. And stay tuned for some upcoming 31 Days of Horror film articles from Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Loki series.

    Enjoy Musicals!

We may not live in a multiverse where we break out in song every time we get emotional about something, but we can sure visit one every now and then. Musicals have been around for more than 100 years. Gilbert and Sullivan gave us some of the first great ones in the format we know today, but they have expanded and evolved throughout the years.

Certainly too many to include in one episode of Enjoy Stuff, but Jay and Shua remember some of the biggest and most influential. Artists like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, and Andrew Lloyd Weber have written sprawling epics that have played on Broadway for decades and spawned movies, (and a lot of High School adaptations). Have fun with us as we revisit stories of watching and even participating in some musicals this week.

Are you interested in musicals? Ever played a part in one? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I loved it! It was better than Cats” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

How We Actually Become Good: Beyond Ego and the Pursuit of Power (A Critique of Evangelical Christianity, Part VII)

How We Actually Become Good: Beyond Ego and the Pursuit of Power (A Critique of Evangelical Christianity, Part VII)

Despite self-doubt and whatever shame and guilt we may carry, the drive to be good lies deep within our humanity. But how do we become good? In this episode—the final episode in the “Critique of Evangelical Christianity” mini-series—we explore how the pursuit of goodness is often just the ego’s game of “looking good and being right” dressed up in fancy clothes, and how rigid religion mistakes looking good for being good. Ultimately, we explore how true goodness only forms in us as we become open to encountering another with openness and vulnerability, which can be terrifying…and is totally worth it.

Taking Nerd Culture Mainstream: The Quenton Brodnak Interview
Imagine living every nerd's dream... What started out as a fan blog ten years ago has turned into a full on production studio that includes TV and streaming projects, a thriving podcast network, convention and fan event services and coming in just a few months, a pop culture film festival. Today, I’m talking with Quenton Brodnak of Project Nerd.

Quenton is the Chief Events Officer for Project Nerd, is a geek-centric creator collective and production company bent on world domination built around sharing original and unique content that we can all nerd out about together. Quenton and I met at Pensacon back in February when we both sat on a panel focused on the responsibility we have as content creators to be both honest and respectful in our reviews and critiques. We hit it off, even though his opinions on The Last Jedi are very different from ours.

Welcome to episode #138 of The Troubadour.

I’m flying solo again on today’s episode without Carly but I still think this turned out to be great interview with a true legend in American and Country Music.  This guest was even gracious enough to leave the beauty and fun of trout fishing on the Gunnison River in Colorado sit in his pickup for an hour and visit with me.

Gary Morris’ recording career garnered five #1 hits and sixteen top 10s!  In 1984 his country rendition of the hit song “Wind Beneath My Wings” won the ACM’s “Single of the Year”.  A couple years earlier, in 1982, Gary was named Billboard’s “Male Artist of the Year.”

    Lay Miserob

At the height of his Nasvhille recording career, Gary was selected to play the lead role in the epic Broadway play “Les Miserables”.  His vocal performance from the play of the song “Bring Him Home” was also part of the platinum selling Grammy winning international cast album.

He’s performed for the Queen of England and every U.S. President from Jimmy Carter to Barrack Obama.  You’ll hear how ironically, through politics, his career in music took off.

This was a great interview and I’ll be forever grateful for Gary taking a moment out of his day fishing in Colorado to visit with me for you, the listener’s of The Troubadour.

You can find out more about Gary’s incredible career and order his merch and music, at www.garymorris.com.

So here comes episode #138 of The Troubadour featuring a true American and Country music legend, Gary Morris.

S2 019: Chris Diamantopoulos — Doing The DON'Ts and Winning

S2 019: Chris Diamantopoulos — Doing The DON'Ts and Winning

Over the course of his 35 year career, Chris Diamantopoulos has built an expansive body of work in the entertainment industry from Broadway theater, to voice acting, to television and film work. Inspired in his early years by Moe of The Three Stooges, Chris knew he wanted to be an actor from the age of 9.

Today, we sit down with Chris as he reveals how his transformative voice skills lead him to the Broadway stage in his twenties, and onward to Los Angeles where he landed roles in some of comedy’s biggest cartoon series. His credits include roles on Family Guy, American Dad!, The Office, 24, Arrested Development and the beloved character of Russ Hanneman on HBO’s Silicon Valley. Chris admits that he often found himself doing the things we as actors are told you’re not supposed to do in the audition room, but reveals how doing so often landed him the job by making bold and clear choices, even when productions already had someone else in mind for the part.

He shares with us the valuable lessons he’s learned over the years about hoping to be discovered and the realization that ultimately in the end, you gotta have some fun.

    Tigers HL84

    Tigers HL84
What do you do when "life has killed the dream I dream"? Or, when "the tigers come at night...tear your hope apart and turn your dream to shame"? "I find it interesting, as well as sad, that the only time we talk about broken dreams, or our agonizing doubts that they will ever become a reality, are when they are a thing of the past and never a thing of our present." I think it's sad that we never talk about our broken dreams until we've already accomplished and conquered them, and never when we are in the brokenness of them. Talking about our broken and unmet dreams is precisely what helps us accomplish them. Dreams, just like Happy Life, are meant to be accomplished together.
