Ep 62: The Murder of Stacey Stites and the Case Against Rodney Reed, Part I

Ep 62: The Murder of Stacey Stites and the Case Against Rodney Reed, Part I
On April 23rd, 1996 Stacey Stites was found murdered in Bastrop, Texas. Rodney Reed was arrested, charged, and condemned to death for her murder. Over the years many concerned organizations, celebrities, business owners, and humanitarians have argued that Rodney Reed is innocent of this crime. The ground swelling movement surrounding this case was an effective agent for action. This week an indefinite stay of execution has been ordered.

In Part 1 of our coverage we discuss the state's case against Rodney Reed and the evidence used to link Reed to Stacey's murder. In Part 2 we will examine everything that went wrong in this case, including suppressed evidence, questionable forensic evidence, false testimony, and more. So join us as we push forward into this two part series.

As a supplement to last week's episode, Brett and Nazim cover the case of Bucklew v. Precyth, which discusses whether or not an individual can contest the death penalty on grounds that it would impose extreme pain just on him, and specifically Breyer's arguments concerning the Constitutionality of the Death Penalty.  Law starts at (04:00).  Note:  Due to scheduling issues, all orders covered in the last week of June will be covered in July episodes.

Episode 30: Interview with Dr. Alexis Artwohl

Episode 30: Interview with Dr. Alexis Artwohl

This is perhaps one of the best episodes of the podcast I've done so far. I spent about 1h45min. talking to Dr. Alexis Artwohl and she shared her expertise on training for lethal force incidents, dealing with the aftermath and PTSD among other topics. She has also agreed to come back on the show later this year, so we have a lot to look forward to.

    Enjoy!

064: Keesha Sharp — 'Lethal Weapon' Insights on Courageous Defining Moments, Making Tough Agent Decisions, Relinquishing the Role to the Blessing of Another and Giving 100% for the Impression of Your Talent

064: Keesha Sharp — 'Lethal Weapon' Insights on Courageous Defining Moments, Making Tough Agent Decisions, Relinquishing the Role to the Blessing of Another and Giving 100% for the Impression of Your Talent

Award-nominated actress, writer, and director Keesha Sharp sheds light on the courage it takes to break the rules and go after what you want, how fear choked her voice out of musically performing, fighting expectations and results, deciding when to change agents and how facing fear ultimately will open up the blessings.  This conversation connects the dots about showing up for your craft 100% of the time and how you never know what job might land you the ticket for the next big job.

In 2019, Keesha not only returns to the screen as Trish Murtaugh in the international hit series “Lethal Weapon” for FOX, but also introduces her directorial skills to the show, which premiered its third season on September 25, 2018.  Combining action and drama with friendship and humor, season three of "Lethal Weapon" follows Detectives Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) and the newly introduced Wesley Cole (Seann William Scott) as they combat crime in Los Angeles.  Sharp shines as Trish, a district attorney, mother, and devoted wife and confidante to Roger.  Sharp was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2017 NAACP Image Awards for her work on the show.

On the film front, Sharp was also most recently seen starring opposite Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, and Sterling K. Brown in “Marshall”.  The film follows the story of Thurgood Marshall (Boseman), the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases.  Sharp’s standout work as Buster Marshall earned her a third NAACP Image Award nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category.  Additionally, Sharp is currently shopping an Eartha Kitt biopic, set to head into production in 2019.  Having been compared to the icon since her early theater days and dubbed by many reviewers as a “young Eartha Kitt,” Sharp will portray Kitt in the leading role of a film that promises iconic songs, compelling childhood stories, and triumph through political blacklisting, all told through salacious details.

    Dr. Brett and Mr. Nazim

    Dr. Brett and Mr. Nazim

This week's episode covers Madison v. Alabama, and whether or not the 8th Amendment bars the execution of someone who lacks mental capacity, but first Brett and Nazim read the single greatest listener feedback we've ever received.  There's no time stamp this week, because the intro is worth your time, and we'll probably be making jokes about it until the end of time.

    Horror 101 - Episode 78: Nightmare (1981)
Greetings Horror Fans! We hope you're prepared to get sticky and sleazy cause that's where the Horror 101 train is headed this time around. For episode 78 we're focusing on one of the most notorious Video Nasty slasher films in the genre. This film was once famous for causing a UK video distributor to go directly to jail (and not pass Go!) for failing to cut certain scenes from the film for its British VHS release. At the height of the Video Nasty purge copies of this movie went for over $100 bucks a pop. The director scandalously accredited the gore effects to maestro Tom Savini, exploiting his name for ticket sales. We'll discuss how this came to be and introduce you to the real effects artists responsible for the shamelessly excessive violence this movie has to offer. Join us as we jump right into the sleaze of Romano Scavolini's Nightmare.

Promoting Lethal Means Safety to Prevent Veteran Suicide

Promoting Lethal Means Safety to Prevent Veteran Suicide

What is it about Lethal Means Safety (LMS) that makes a difference in suicide prevention? LMS is about increasing the distance between thoughts of suicide and action. In this week’s episode, we are joined by Dr. Joseph Simonetti, MD, MPH, physician and suicide prevention researcher with the Rocky Mountain MIRECC. Dr. Simonetti guides us through the fundamentals of lethal means safety, why it’s important, and provides suggestions on how to ensure that conversations about lethal means safety are Veteran-centered.

We focus specifically on firearms considering their disproportionate lethality and that firearm-related injuries account for more than 2/3 of Veteran suicides (more than in the general US population). During high-risk periods, temporary off-site storage of firearms may be the safest option by allowing an individual the opportunity to ride out an emotional crisis, connect with other resources, and for other evidence-based treatments to take effect. Dr. Simonetti dispels common misconceptions about discussing firearm safety in the context of collaborative mental health care. His poignant anecdote about what he does to help suicidal Veteran patients with easy access to loaded guns reminds us why lethal means safety is critical for effective suicide safe care.
