    62. Science Fiction Romance and AI Tools with Keri Kruspe

“To me, when you're writing anything with science fiction, the best way to present that is remembering your human foundation.”

In “Episode 62. Science Fiction Romance and AI Tools with Keri Kruspe,” host Beth Barany, creativity coach and teacher, and science fiction and fantasy novelist, talks to science fiction romance author Keri Kruspe about both the positives and negatives of using Chat GPT and about how Keri uses it and other AI tools inside her creative process. They also discuss Keri’s writing, her upcoming books, and how she found her brand with Beth.

    ABOUT KERI KRUSPE

Keri Kruspe, author of Otherworldly Romantic Adventures, loves nothing more than to write about romances that feature “feisty heroines who aren’t afraid to take a chance on life… or love. Her writing career started when she became irritated that most SciFi romances had women kidnapped before they could find love. Determined to create something different, she turned “the alien kidnapping trope upside down” (Vine Voice) and the ALIEN EXCHANGE trilogy was born. Keri’s latest SciFi Romance series, ANCIENT ALIEN DESCENDANTS, is taking the Ancient Alien motif and mixes it with a sensual, romantic twist.

    Rabbit Hole

    Rabbit Hole

In this Rant/Rave episode, Conor and Caroline go down the rabbit hole into the Disney characters that are worthy (or unworthy) of icon status. Has Caroline gone mad by claiming Alice of Alice in Wonderland is too unlikeable to be such a noteworthy Disney symbol? And would you agree with Conor that Zootopia's Judy Hopps does not get the recognition she deserves as the complex, modern hero? Here's some very good advice: don't be late to this episode!

DISCLAIMER: While Judy Hopps is a fictional character, we acknowledge that her role as a police officer is representative of modern policing. Although her character may hope for a more understanding and different approach to law enforcement, in our world we are not there yet. Black and Brown people continue to suffer senseless deaths at the hands of police and a broken, racist system. Poor Unfortunate Podcast supports our neighbors of color, the Black Lives Matter movement, and all people that seek to end police brutality and the racist institutions that enable this violence.

Silent Beginnings: Alice in Wonderland (1903)

When this podcast was conceived, explicit material was not in mind whatsoever.

But this month, Anni (@Of Mice & Princesses) and I talk SEX, DRUGS, and WONDERLAND. That's right; what started as a focused discussion on the 1903 Alice later dissolved into a talk about the 1976 X-rated movie musical of the same name. It remains a fun, informative time, but uh... just know we are not above adult content here at DRtR.

Sara Ella - The Wonderland Trials

Marissa chats with Sara Ella about her new Alice-inspired retelling - THE WONDERLAND TRIALS - as well as some of the unique challenges that come with writing retellings, such as deciding what liberties you can take with the original source material that will both surprise and satisfy your readers; keeping a checklist to ensure you're being true to your vision and including all the ideas and details you care most about; the simple joy of leaving "Easter eggs" in the text for readers to discover; why writing puzzles and riddles in book format (as opposed to the big screen) can be so bloody difficult!; the importance of putting restrictions and weaknesses into your worldbuilding and magic system, even when that world is based on nonsense and impossibilities; and a bonus non-writing topic: What it's like to play a beloved character at Walt Disney World!

Alice Through the Looking Glass - Part 2 (of 4)

This week, we continue with Alice's journey through the Looking Glass Land, where everything is backwards, or opposite, or just plain odd.  The theme of opposites seems to have been important for Lewis Carroll - Alice's journey to Wonderland began outside on a warm spring day, whereas her travels in Looking Glass Land began inside on a cold autumn one. The theme of playing cards was pervasive in Wonderland, whereas Looking Glass Land features chess. Now we meet Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.  What will that hold for Alice?
