Season of Giving, Spoils of War, You Decide

Season of Giving, Spoils of War, You Decide

This Thanksgiving weekend Patti and the Pottymouth cross-trained with hockey, Led Zeppelin, assembling IKEA furniture, beer farms, and unsuccessful mousing. MLB players, however, leaned into the giving with Andrew Vaughn working with Digs for DIgnity to assist a family emerging from homelessness, Hunter Greene outfitting hundreds of kids with brand new cleats, and Pablo López supporting pet rescue through pickleball. Playoff teams voted on how to divide their percentage of the postseason gate, sharing “life-changing money” with support staff who helped them get there. Hall of Fame balloting was announced and former NCiB boyfriends are starting to make the list. Winter ball in the DR is featuring familiar faces including Tatis, Jr., Ramirez, Profar, and Aquaman. Baseball United has kicked off in Dubai with appearances by Big Sexy, cricket players, Justine Siegal, and a 6-run HR. We don’t think “moneyball” means what you think it means. Pottymouth wants you to play LVBP fantasy with her. An NBA family reminds us that players are more than pawns in the game. Next week we kick off a new group of baseball boyfriends with the A’s and Rockies. Join our Patreon so you can watch us record “backstage!”

We say “cabana injuries,” “you would have known if there were cowbells,” and “we’re only drinking barrel-aged beverages today.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Tommy John and Trombones

    Tommy John and Trombones

It was a “pretty fun day” for Stephen Vogt, named manager for the Guards, less so for David Ross in the surprise loss of his CHI gig, and downright polarizing in regards to Craig Counsell’s historic contract prompting another manager to muse about unionization. The Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards lead Mauricio Dubón for multiple Honduran firsts, Ha Seong Kim to a first for Asian-born MLB players, and a Pottymouth first as she finally remembered to vote for Platinum Glove. We ponder the steady increase in Tommy John surgeries (more diagnoses or more stress on arms?) and consider staying away from where GMs gather to avoid stomach bugs. Oakland’s mayor incorporates swag and economic greed in her appeal to owners to vote against an A’s move to Vegas. Nelson Cruz concludes his LIDOM farewell tour in time for Citifield to welcome Los Tigres del Licey and Las Águilas Cibaeñas for a three game series to packed houses. Rush’s Geddy Lee, with a surprising amount of baseball cred, prepares to auction 300 items from his stunning collection of baseball memorabilia. Please support USA Baseball’s Anna Kimbrel in her Baseball at Heart effort to fund more girls baseball clinics in Uganda.

We say, “more Rockers in baseball,” “multiple Funnars,” and “he chews too much tobacco to be my boyfriend.”  Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. No As*h&les at the Bar

    No As*h&les at the Bar

That’s how we define a successful boyfriend season -- some we picked too soon, some didn’t live up to the hype,  some left town, many were all we hoped for and more, but nobody broke our hearts. We had a great time saying goodbye to our 2021 crew and making room for the new guys. Wander Franco makes a case for being a 2022 Rays boyfriend with his tremendous deal.

We teach vocabulary words in English and Spanish this week, setting you up for the deadline to tender contracts to players with six or fewer years of playing time (Super Two!), and for understanding the calls if you are watching winter ball instead of negotiations (carrera!). LIDOM provides cover for Yasiel Puig and Marcel Ozuna, and also gives Jose Siri and Mike Brosseau a place to shine. They honor “No Violence Against Women” Day by treating women to a day at the ballpark, and Big Papi will roll out Día de Leyendas to support his children’s fund on December 5. 12/5 is also the next double header in the Puerto Rican Women’s series, currently tied at one each. Pottymouth will need your support this week as her CPBL Lions are making her lose sleep. Lastly, we prepare you for a likely lock-out as the CBA needs to wrap up on December 1st and it is not looking good. We say froo-froo shit, hat trick, and double-fisting hard seltzers.

    Mischief Managed

    Mischief Managed

Vote on the pants and hair. That’s how Award Season: Boyfriend Edition might play out. Our guys did well across the Silver Sluggers and Gloves both Gold and Platinum (Patti 13, Pottymouth 11, if anyone is keeping score -- we certainly wouldn’t do that), but our pre-season predictions don’t hold up. You can still vote for your baseball bfs for the All-MLB team. It was “Business As Usual” at the annual GM meeting, at least according to every single GM quoted anywhere.  We do appreciate a good set of talking points. Scott Boras made a predictable splash by speaking the truth about tanking and the need to incentivize all teams to win. Pottymouth sets up the entertainment to come with Big Papi and ARod facing off on the newly-released Hall of Fame ballot.

It’s Labor Day in November as Patti takes you through the economic issues on both the players’ union and the league sides in collective bargaining. MLB sees a defined pot of money and is just talking about different ways to slice it up, whereas the players don’t put an upper limit on their value -- especially the younger players. We have thoughts about the proposal tying pay to fWAR, getting to arbitration and FA sooner vs eliminating negotiations altogether and keeping players under team control for longer, and changes to the draft to address tanking on purpose. We hypothesize on what it means that a majority of the union’s player subcommittee are pitchers, Boras clients, and Patti’s bfs.

Pottymouth’s favorite CPBL team could pull off a trip to the league championship, and has to spend some time explaining to Patti how the playoff system is real. The Korean Series is underway. We celebrate that LMB loves Fernando Rodney like we do, naming him Reliever of the Year. Former Pottymouth BFs Franmil (en route) and Franchy add to the fun of watching LIDOM. Daddy Yankee, new co-owner of the LBPRC’s Cangrejeros de Santurce, encourages more celebrities to shine a light on the league. The Hammers’ William Contreras heads to Venezuela to join the Cardinales, in a league where managers are setting records for shortest careers. Your vocabulary word of the week is “jonrón.”

We say “shenanigans,” “Mountcastle was robbed,” and “eat the rich.”

We All Need a Buster Hug

We All Need a Buster Hug

We cry a little into our brunch beer over Buster Posey’s retirement. Our World Series wrap up includes Pottymouth’s dream job, Joc’s Mardis Gras moment, Freddie, Eddie, and Jorge, and a better way to honor 44 than just playing with numbers. Collective bargaining takes center stage so we talk potential lock-out both practically and optically. It’s officially Hot Stove time so we lay out themes to watch this week including qualifying offers, opt ins, and opt outs,

Baseball is not over! Winter ball is in full swing and Pottymouth’s guide is a great place to start.  MLB favorites are playing in LIDOM, which you can see on MLBTV, and LBPRC just struck a deal with FOX to make it easier for you to watch Puerto Rican baseball. All this and LVBP and CPBL too! Lastly we do some crosstraining with the NFL to drive home a point that even previously favored QBs can be wingnut anti-vaxxers. We say bobblehead color problem, shiny baseball jacket, and “idioma anglosajón”

    Viva la Revolución

    Viva la Revolución

Theo Epstein departs the Cubs, leading to lots of speculation about his next steps. Team ownership? The Commissioner's office? Shake things up? Or focus on his Foundation to be Named Later and the Player’s Alliance? NCiB votes for revolution.  Also in CubsWorld, Wrigley Field is designated a National Historical Landmark, which seems overdue as well as a windfall in tax credits.

The Washington Nationals find a new Triple A home with the Rochester Red Wings, which Patti and the Pottymouth endorse 100%. Nothing personal, Fresno. More feel good news --the Nats partner with a local restaurant group to offer a turkey fry in the outfield, raising needed funds for the local “Fill the Fridge” initiative. The Dodgers host a drive-through holiday festival to celebrate the season and their World Series win, and to benefit their team charities. Brian Cashman, GM of the Yankees, camps out in Yankee Stadium to raise awareness of teen homelessness.  Will 2021 be the year we finally get a new women’s baseball league? Sue Parsons Zipay, of that “old” women’s baseball league, the AAGBL, is trying to make that happen.

The “small asshole detour” from happy talk takes us to Robinson Cano busted a second time for PEDs and missing the entire 2021 season, Aroldis Frickin’ Chapman's suspension for throwing 101 mph at Mike Brosseau’s head reduced two 2 games, and Cody Bellinger's shoulder surgery to repair damage from his homerun celebration.

Pottymouth’s CPBL BF Lin An-Ko wins Rookie of the Year. There’s drama in the finals of the KBO. And even with familiar faces on every team, a COVID outbreak makes the Dominican League a lot less fun. Domestic abusers Odubel Herrera and Domingo Germán may be working stints there as a redemption tour.
