Where can I find joy amidst my desperation?
In moments of struggle and desperation, we often find ourselves yearning for an escape from the harsh realities that surround us. And so, we turn to the comforting embrace of alcohol, seeking respite from the weight of our troubles. But as the intoxicating haze dissipates, we are faced once again with the unyielding cruelty of our circumstances.
It’s in these moments that we pose a poignant question to ourselves: Can we find a glimmer of happiness, if only for a fleeting moment?
On this podcast, my guest, Dr. Neff, an Anesthesiologist and Bestselling Author, recounts his journey from being enslaved by alcoholism to breaking free and finding happiness.
Dr Stephan Neff is passionate about demystifying mental health problems and helping the people around him live a life so full of joy that yesterday is jealous of today. Born in
Germany, Stephan has studied medicine at the prestigious Heidelberg University before
travelling and working around the globe. Nowadays he has settled down as an anaesthetist in beautiful New Zealand and has become a bestselling author and advocate for mental health and addiction.
He is uniquely qualified in this role. After all, a lifetime of trauma led Stephan to drown his sorrows, only to find that the critters can swim. As an alcoholic in recovery, he has
experienced addiction and mental health problems first-hand. After successful rehabilitation, Stephan is now an expert in living a life so fantastic, that alcohol has simply no role to play. He shares this passion through his podcast, YouTube channel, and other social media (all titled “My Steps to Sobriety”).
In his book “My steps to Sobriety” he shares the lessons he has learned as a doctor and as a man. And the truth is simple – The past does not equal the future. Every alcoholic can turn his life around, one little decision at a time. This book shows how to do it.
But would it not make sense to start earlier? Stephan believes that it is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. His creative partnership with Belinda Managh has led to the beautiful “Esmee the mindful “-series, which addresses core beliefs that are laid down in early childhood. The adventures of Esmee and her friends allow the children to learn about emotions and mindfulness in a playful way and help grownups to put these life lessons into daily practice.

To be human means you will experience stress at points in your life throughout the course of your life. It is part of the human condition that, if left unmanaged, leaves us gassed. Whether it’s because of work, family, weather, finances, loss, illness, or even the news and social media, we all experience stress and, it seems like today, we are more stressed out than ever. Lucky for us, April is Stress Awareness Month. In this episode, we share some of our own stressors we’re experiencing, discuss the importance of breathing and calming the mind, and emphasize the necessity of finding your own ways to unplug, unwind, and decompress to preserve your mental health and physical well-being.
When we’re going through difficulties and suffering through challenging times, sayings and platitudes, personal development memes seem particularly pithy.
But within these cliches lie truths that if reflected on can actually help us through the very challenges that elicited the advice in the first place.
Shifting your perspective to “Life happens FOR you” helps you raise your awareness beyond the level of the challenges and limitations you’re facing. It gets your head out of the immediacy and urgency of the struggle long enough to at least relive yourself of the torment of despair.
You can shift from reflecting on reasons why, which in reality is unanswerable, to reasons for, which is empowering because you get to choose.
Yes, there are things that happen which are beyond our control. Having a happens for you mindset empowers you to and helps build your resilience through such times.

Hello listeners! Here's a little-known fact about me (wink)...I love planning!
However, over the past year I've realized something that planners like me, and maybe like you, don't give much thought to...and that is, as a planner, you can plan yourself right out of any actions to achieve that plan.
Today I'm sharing some personal experiences wrestling with this fact, how I stopped planning, and took action to follow my dreams!
Jim Rohn, the outstanding motivator and instructor, always said that in order for things to change, you must change.
Life isn't easy. Doing the same thing over and over again is the definition of insanity if you expect things to be different by doing the same thing over and over and over. That's not the way it works. In order for things to change, you must change.
I give you the tools and techniques and motivation to be able to do so!

During an earlier conversation, Bryan used the phrase "Life Happens." Alex was triggered, so he brought it to us to discuss the meaning of the phrase. We discuss what it means to each of us, accepting failure, being responsible for failed goals and Markus' example from adolescence leads to Alex gaining a clearer understanding.
