THIS EPISODE MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE………BOWEL CANCER…..

Now that I have your attention, once considered an old persons disease, there is an alarming increase in both diagnosis and death in younger people.  Here are some frightening  statistics:

    1.        Bowel Cancer is now the #1 death by cancer of 25-30 year olds

    2.       This is up from #9, 40 years ago.

    3.       Now the 4th most common cancer, there has been an 11% increase in under 50’s

My guest on this episode of ‘A Cuppa with The Con Versationalist’ is Nick Lee, Chairman of The Jodi Lee foundation,  corporate health expert and co-director and partner of Healthy Minds.

With a beautiful family and working as a director of multi-national consumer goods company, Nick Lee had good reason to be happy and optimistic about his future. That changed in an instant when his wife Jodi was diagnosed with stage IV bowel cancer at the age of 39. After battling with the disease for 2 years, Jodi passed away in 2010.

We all face critical hurdles in our lives, but when we do it is how we react that determines our future health and happiness. After Jodi’s death Nick made the brave decision to leave his job and use his experience to do all he could to stop others suffering a similar experience. He established The Jodi Lee Foundation to inspire others to protect themselves against bowel cancer and make positive choices to improve their health. The work of the Foundation has saved many Australian lives.

Nick was a 2015 SA Australian of the Year finalist, and was awarded the 2013 Social Entrepreneur of the Year (Central Region) by Ernst and Young. In 2022 Nick was awarded The Medal of the Order of Australia. Nick receives this recognition for his service to the community through the not-for-profit sector (Jodi Lee Foundation) and commitment to raising awareness for the early detection and prevention of bowel cancer.

During this eye opening and captivating interview,

    ·         Nick shared his story.

    ·         What were the symptoms and what you should be looking out for.

    ·         Was there a delay in diagnosis and is there an ‘age barrier’ to diagnosis?

    ·         The dramatic increase in cases and deaths in under 50’s  and even more alarmingly, under 30’s

    ·         The valuable work of the foundation through research, education and support.

    ·         There is a 99% survival rate if there is early detection.

    ·         The importance of screening and questioning your doctor.

"I left my arm in Adelaide!" Kerryn Harvey, Paratriathlete

"I left my arm in Adelaide!" Kerryn Harvey, Paratriathlete

Kerryn Harvey was a triathlete and after a 2013 cycling accident in the Adelaide Hills, Australia, she contracted a flesh eating bacteria, referred to as Necrotizing Fasciitis resulting in a four quarter arm amputation which includes her whole arm, shoulder and some chest and back muscles.

With toxic shock and organ failure, Kerryn’s loved ones had to decide whether to amputate to try and save her life, or say their goodbyes. Fortunately for Kerryn, her friends knew just how strong she was and knew that when she woke up, she would make the most of her life, no matter what.

In this episode you will hear Kerryn’s story of survival against all odds. In fact, she had less than a 5% chance of living but the incredible medical team at the Royal Adelaide Hospital not only saved her life, but were the inspiration for Kerryn to give back when she got back on that bike.  Kerryn raised a significant amount of money for research at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and began the Start Foundation. A charity that helps amputees to afford the prosthetics, equipment or modifications needed in order to play sport.

Kerryn has gone on to achieve more personal goals and now holds a world ranking as a paratriathlete. Nothing stops this woman from giving it her all. She is now a personal trainer, an inspiring sportswoman and a force of nature.

We've Got a Friend in Elyria Township Fire

This episode of Petey Podcast, recorded earlier in October (2021), features Elyria Township Fire Chief Russ Scarbrough and Assistant Chief Art Mead. Elyria Township Fire is an staunch partner of the Elyria Schools and an excellent teacher of safety to our little learners at the Elyria Early Childhood Village and Westwood Elementary School. The Chief and Assistant Chief chatted with us about the work of firefighters every day and their work through these unprecedented times of COVID-19.  At the end of the day, first responders do what they do for love of the work.  "We love helping people," said Mead.  "I can't think of a single person that's on our department who isn't working more than one job--some have two, some even have three--while they are doing this just because it's the passion that they have  for what we do."

It's a great day to be a Pioneer! Thanks for listening. Find Elyria Schools on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube!

    What happens in Surf Club...

    What happens in Surf Club...

Surf life savers hold an almost mythical status as Australian heroes who risk their lives to save others.

But these dedicated volunteers say they’re being silenced by their own organisation.

Now, they’re speaking out about poor governance and money being spent on surf sports, rather than essential lifesaving equipment.

    Kat Gregory hears their stories.

Who gets saved first in a fire?

Who gets saved first in a fire?

For professional fire and rescue workers, it’s not all sirens, cool trucks and running red lights. They often have to make really hard and terrible decisions in moments of heat, smoke and danger. Their job is to be there to help on the worst day of your life. So, if you were a firefighter, who would you save first?
