Our resistance and refusal to submit to oppression beckon us to embrace black history as a journey of power over pain.

S1 E6 The Art of Degriefing Part 2 | Dr. Lyn Prashant

S1 E6 The Art of Degriefing Part 2 | Dr. Lyn Prashant

Loss is a part of the human condition, and grief can occur around any kind of loss, not just the loss of a loved one. So, why do we have so much difficulty accepting death, even when we know it’s expected from an existing illness, even though we know everyone dies. Why are so many stuck in grief?

Lyn Prashant, PhD is CEO and Founder of Integrative Grief Therapy. In the Art of Degriefing Part 2, Dr. Prashant and I discuss non-death losses and approaches to transform your grief and get unstuck. Again, according to Dr. Prashant, "Love is not the reason we grieve... IT'S ATTACHMENT."

    Learn:
    • What are non-death losses? How are children and adolescents affected differently than the elderly?
    • Your heart knows in addition to feeling. What are embodied losses? How are they experienced in the body?
    • Why Life’s temporary existence makes it a constant “catch-and-release” of what was in order to embrace what is.
    • Everyone dies. So, why do we go into shock about expected deaths?
    • Grief about divorce is really grieving the loss of the fantasy of the marriage
    • How do we learn self-care in a world full of loss?
    • Solastalgia – How global grief exacerbates personal loss/grief?
    • How the energy of chronic, negative thoughts and feelings including grief becomes physical illness?
    • A variety of approaches to transform your grief including: integrative mind-body therapies, self-skillful questioning, self-compassion, and self-care.
    • Elisabeth Kubler Ross’ 5 Stages of grief is for people confronting their own mortality, not loved one’s mortality

S2 E11 The Spiraling Crisis of African-American Male Teachers and Students | Dr Lamarr Darnell Shields | Balin A. Durr, MD

There is a spiraling crisis of African-American male teachers and students in this country. African-American boys and young men are suspended and expelled at much higher rates than their peers of other races, and up to 50% of children expelled from preschool are African-American boys, even though they’re only 20% of the students.

My special guest, Lamarr Darnell Shields, PhD, the Founder and Senior Director of Education and Innovation at the Cambio Group, and former professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education discusses this shocking trend, causes, and solutions that help African-American boys and young men express their brilliance, including the necessity of recruiting and retaining African-American male teachers.

    Learn:

•How the game is designed for black and brown people to lose
•About the devastating impact upon African-American boys’ future when they don’t learn to read by the end of 2nd grade
•How educational approaches are designed for girls’ learning styles, causing boys to be treated as defective girls
•Boys don’t need fixing! Move away from fixing boys to fostering resiliency
•Effective communication for boys involves helping them develop an emotional vocabulary and giving them simple, straight-forward bullet point instructions, not complex, layered instructions
•What is turning boys off and tuning them out?
•10 Successful Strategies for teachers and parents to engage black and brown boys before psychological, spiritual, and physical suicide.
•About the necessity of African-American male teachers as role models because boys can’t become what they don’t identify with and because of the significant improvement in African-American boys’ success
•How chronic stress including from racism and discrimination causes illness

S2 E10 Your Story Matters! Storytelling Reveals Our Shared Humanity | John W. Fountain | Balin A. Durr, MD

Each and every one of us want to matter! We want to be seen for who we truly are, and we want to be heard. When we feel invisible, it’s painful! We tell our stories in an effort to be understood, to be valued, to know that we matter. We tell the story of our loved ones and the society for the same reasons and to leave a legacy of our values, standards, accomplishments, hope, and resiliency for the inevitable hard times and losses. Storytelling enables us to see ourselves in each other. Through this bridge of connection and understanding, we can overcome differences, transcend indifference, and see our shared humanity.

My special guest, John W. Fountain, an award-winning columnist, journalist, professor of journalism, a 2021-22 Fulbright Scholar, and publisher of five books, the latest, “One in a Million: Diary of a Freed Black Journalist” discusses:

    ·         The Black church’s influence on his development as a storyteller

    ·         The significant impact of our stories upon those who hear them and its generational legacy

    ·         His motivation to write stemmed in part from the false perceptions and narratives about African-American men

    ·         The importance of speaking your authentic truth and maintaining your perspective

    ·         Storytelling is one of the most effective ways to make visible the humanity of the marginalized or “those who linger in the shadows”

    ·         The need to tell our stories when mainstream media remains silent

    ·         Writing tips for beginners including accepting your writing imperfections

S1 E2 A Doula Can Provide Life-Saving Support to Moms and Babies | Dr. Dona Perry

The U.S. ranks the worst in maternal care and mortality rates compared to 10 other developed nations, despite spending the largest percentage on health care of all wealthy nations. Worse yet, two-thirds of the 700 pregnancy-related deaths that occur every year are preventable.

Dr. Dona Perry, a Board-certified OB/GYN and Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, discusses the importance of support during pregnancy and postpartum care, communicating after pregnancy with someone who knows the warning signs of a problem, and how a doula educates and supports moms and babies during and after pregnancy, which significantly improves their health and decreases the occurrence of illness and death. Also, mental illness, including substance abuse, presents a significant threat to the health and well-being of the mother and child; and how nutrition is foundational to good brain health.

S2 E3 Solving the ADHD Riddle | Part 2 | Dr. Connie McReynolds | Balin A. Durr, MD

If your child struggles with attention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, or other symptoms of ADHD, it can be challenging to know how to help them. These symptoms along with increasing meltdowns and defiance, disorganization, incomplete tasks, forgetfulness, and having a hard time at school are a signal that something is wrong and it may or may not be ADHD.

Dr. Connie McReynolds, a Licensed Psychologist & Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, discusses her new book, Solving the ADHD Riddle: The Real Cause and Lasting Solutions to Your Child’s Struggle to Learn. Dr. McReynolds reveals why current diagnoses are’t working and what you, as a parent, need to know to guide your child back to a life that is fully functional, happy and successful.

    In Part 2:
    * Your body can’t live without a brain!
    * Common myths about ADHD
    * How Adult ADHD causes unemployment, lost income, and low self-esteem
    * How ADHD interferes with reading and comprehension skills necessary to succeed from 4th grade on, resulting in increased dropout rates
    * A child can inherit ADHD from a parent
    * How neurofeedback — a non-medication, non-invasive treatment for ADHD and PTSD — makes your life better
