Episode 416: Loaves of Torah - Vanessa Harper

Vanessa Harper is the Senior Director of Adult Jewish Living at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA and as the Reform Rabbi-in-Residence at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA. She bakes challah that interprets the Torah portion each week in what was originally an Instagram-based educational project, then a kinetic midrash class, and now a book: Loaves of Torah: Exploring the Jewish Year Through Challah. She joins Dan and Lex for a conversation about living in creative relationship to Judaism, and challah as a chevruta (study-partner).

John 6: Eating the Bread of Life

John 6: Eating the Bread of Life

    John 6:22-59 (ESV)
Our hosts chew on the topic of eating Jesus's flesh and drinking His blood. What was Jesus talking about? Did He support cannibalism? Was He talking about the Lord's Supper? Was it something completely different? Andrew and Edwin remember the misunderstandings that happened earlier in John to help us grasp Jesus's point in this quite unnerving statement.

John 6: This is Indeed the Prophet!

John 6: This is Indeed the Prophet!

    John 6:1-15 (ESV)
Our hosts continue discussing John's answer to the question, which prophet is Jesus? When the people see the food-multiplying miracle of feeding thousands with five loaves and two fishes, they determine Jesus is indeed The Prophet. Sadly, even with the correct confession, they still don't quite get it.

    Luke Chapter 9 Part 3

    Luke Chapter 9 Part 3
Our God is a miraculous God. And God frequently does miracles in order to meet the needs of his people. But realize something very important in the scriptures, we see the miracles that you should did, and others like the apostles, they did these miracles for an entirely different purpose. Leviticus Chapter 7 Part 2
Well, we had been studying for several weeks concerning the offerings, that first were in the Mishcon, or the Oh, hell, Mo, Ed, the tabernacle. And then of course, the same type of sacrifices were offered up in the temple. And obviously, today, we have no Altar. And that is a highly significant truth, it has most important implications for it. The Sea of Galilee pilgrimage audio tour

The Sea of Galilee pilgrimage audio tour

During this episode I will take you on an audio tour to the Sea of Galilee where we will visit Bethsaida, Chorazin, Capernaum, Tabgha and the Mount of Beatitudes. These are pilgrimage locations related to places where according to tradition Jesus lived, spoke to his followers, visited synagogues and did miracles.

Disclaimer: I am a trained tour guide at the Bethlehem Bible College, I am not a theologian and I do not belong to any religion. I am telling the stories the way they were told and explained to me by Palestinian Christians who still live in the land where Jesus lived 2000 years ago.

    John 8 - I am!

    John 8 - I am!

Anyone who might feel reluctant to surrender his will to the will of another should remember Jesus’ words, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” We must of necessity be servant to someone, either to God or to sin. The sinner prides himself on his independence, completely overlooking the fact that he is the weak slave of the sins that rule his members. The man who surrenders to Christ exchanges a cruel slave driver for a kind and gentle Master whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light.

John 7 - The world doesn't understand the Spirit of God

John 7 - The world doesn't understand the Spirit of God

"I fear that sometimes we who, "profess and call ourselves Christians," err in exactly the opposite direction. Instead of worshipping more than God, I fear we worship less than God. This appears when we forget to pay due adoration to the Holy Spirit of God. The true God is triune — Father Son, and Holy Spirit — and though there is but one God, yet that one God has manifested Himself to us in the trinity of His sacred Persons." Spurgeon

John 6C - Focus on the Spirit not the physical

John 6C - Focus on the Spirit not the physical

Man constantly thinks about the physical, while Jesus is showing us what's really important, the spirit! While our focus tends to revolve about our belly buttons and how to deal with caring for our physical needs, Jesus directs us to the important/critical part of our being, our spirit. For if Satan can keep us focused on the worldly, then we can't truly worship God in spirit and truth!

John 6 B - Man focuses on the world and Jesus is focused on our spirit

John 6 B - Man focuses on the world and Jesus is focused on our spirit

Man is so short sighted and yet, Jesus is lovingly focused on our spiritual future because that's what will last! Today, we read that despite all of the miracles already done, the people want just one more!!! Jesus knows, that even if He performed one more, that wouldn't be enough. As a result, He focuses on our spirits, not our bodies. Join me in reading about His miracles and love for us and be encouraged!

John 6A - There are so many and so little, but God will make a way

John 6A - There are so many and so little, but God will make a way

"Five thousand people and five little biscuits to feed them! The disproportion is enormous — if each one should have only the tiniest crumb, there would not be enough! In like manner, there are millions of people in London and only a handful of whole-hearted Christians earnestly desiring to see the city converted to Christ. There are more than a thousand millions of men in this round world and oh, so few missionaries breaking the Bread of Life to them! Almost as few for the millions, as were these five barley cakes for those five thousand! " Spurgeon
Have you ever felt that the problem was so large, you couldn't do anything about it? Jesus had thousands to feed and basically nothing to do it with! Yet, with God, all things are possible.
