Nope, Nope, Nope Or Yup, Yup, Yup

Another scary movie, and you know what that means?  Yes, I had to talk about it, especially with the Jordan Peele name on it, that is like the seal of approval for the genre these days.  And with it comes the movie trip to see the latest of these, Nope, with a few friends on the show as fellow Nopers to give not only their Letterboxd ratings, but also, all of us try and come up with the moral or message of the movie.  That may be hard here with there being so much you can take away from this film staring Black Panther and Black Mirror's Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer from both Scream the TV series and Scream Queens, and The Walking Dead legend Steven Yeun!  So join all of us, this pack of movie-going people, as we dissect this new age alien movie, and see if you should also say, yup to seeing this modern day Jaws movie with feelings, or if you need to say nope and not get sucked into the hype.

Let us know what you thought of this latest scaretastic movie filled with trauma and deep therapy and grief overcoming moments with the occasional dance breaks on social at either @NickNack_IC or @NickNack Movies on Letterboxd, Twitter, Tik Tok, Instagram, and all of the social media platforms you can think of that still function!

Rushion Interviews Golden Globe winning ,Lovecraft Country, & Lean on Me star Regina Taylor speaks on playing Michelle Obama's Mother in "The First Lady!"

In this episode of Money Making Conversations the legendary Regina Taylor drops in to discuss her newest role in the the Anthology series on Showtime "The First Lady." She discusses the respect she has for the character she is playing and how she relates to past roles. We speak on the HBO limited series "Lovecraft Country" and "I'll Fly Away" the series that awarded her a a Golden Globe.

    More On Regina Taylor

Taylor’s first film was the made-for-TV movie Crisis at Central High, starring Joanne Woodward, in which she portrayed Minniejean Brown, one of the first Black students to integrate the Arkansas school system. Taylor next garnered praise for her role as Mrs. Carter, a drug-addicted mother in 1989's Lean on Me, alongside Morgan Freeman. Other film roles include Spike Lee’s Clockers, Saturday Church and Losing Isaiah.

More recently, Taylor was seen in the mind-bending Lovecraft Country (Jordan Peele, J. J. Abrams, Mischa Greene); The Wonder Years (Saladin K. Patterson, Lee Daniels, Marc Valez, Fred Savage); Red Line (Ava DuVernay); All Day and a Night (Joe Robert Cole, Jeffrey Wright, Ashton Sanders); Blue Bloods (Tom Selleck); Black List; and Dig.

In yet another tribute to the actress, the Dallas Independent School District is rebuilding L. G. Pinkston High School, where Taylor was a student, and naming the new Fine Arts Department for Regina Taylor.

    More On The First Lady

In addition to Taylor, the new anthology drama stars Oscar®, Emmy® and Tony winner Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), as former first lady Michelle Obama, Oscar and Emmy nominee Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit) as Betty Ford and Emmy and Screen Actors Guild winner Gillian Anderson (The Crown) as Eleanor Roosevelt.

“Michelle Obama has always credited her mother as being an inspirational role model,” Taylor said. “Her mother and father were absolute pillars of strength, encouraging her to pursue her dreams, let no one deter her and to not get in her own way. It was crucial for Michelle Obama, as the first Black woman in the White House, to bring along her essential source of strength – her mother, Marian Robinson.”

Nick Nack New To Theaters - F9: The Fast Saga And The Forever Purge

Nick Nack New To Theaters - F9: The Fast Saga And The Forever Purge

New movies aplenty in this latest episode of Nick Nack Goes to the Movies. The action packed automobile romp, F9: The Fast Saga, as well as the latest Purge-a-palooza, The Forever Purge. Both of these films clearly fall into the comfort food viewing category of their genres, but with all we have been through in 2020 and 2021, we all could use the tater tot equivalent of films to turn your brain off a bit, and enjoy either rocket cars and tank flips or a free advert for Party City Halloween shopping and a lighter version of the messaging from Lovecraft Country, Them, and AHS: Cult.  This is also the fist movie we drop some Letterboxd reviews, it's a best out of 5 star system, but if you are an ImDb-er like me, you will still feel pretty right at home.  So get back to the movies if you feel safe doing such, and come back to some brand new movie action on this pop-culture podcast!

So if you caught either The Forever Purge or F9, what did you think?  And what are you looking forward to seeing next on streaming services or in theaters?  Let me know on social at either @NickNackMovies or @NickNack_IC on either Tik Tok, Instagram, Twitter, or Letterboxd!

249 - H.P. Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos, and the Horror You Love Today

Hope you have as fun listening to this one as I had making it! I had no idea prior to digging into this topic, that Lovecraft was so influential on modern horror. Like Stranger Things? Heavily influenced by Lovecraft. Like Stephen King's It? The cosmic monster who presents as Pennywise is a creature who could have come directly from the Cthulhu mythos. Much of the Twilight Zone, the X-Files, the BBC's Black Mirror and more - so influenced by Lovecraft. And, in a way, fictional universes like the Marvel cinematic universe and George Lucas's Star Wars universe - influenced by the cosmic worldbuilding of Lovecraft. We feel a lot of his influence today - but who was the man? We'll take a look at that as well - including the ugly parts. And we'll meet some of his creatures and dissect the structure of some of Lovecraft's most influential stories. A very Weird Tales edition of Timesuck awaits!

    I am Not My Hair

On this week's episode of Whatever We Want with Jay & Kay  co-hosts Jamal Sterling and Khalilah Elliott tackle the politics of Black hair, discuss trauma porn and the racial horror genre, as well as debate double standards in the critiquing of Black art and the impact of respectability politics on Black creatives.

Plus, the co-hosts hilariously reflect on the boring (but welcome) reality of "normal" politics in the post-Trump era and tackle the questions of why people really hate Tyler Perry and whether or not straight men and women can every truly just be platonic friends.

Episode 10: Season Finale: “How to Citizen” with Baratunde Thurston, and Recognizing TV/ Movies that have Centered Race

Episode 10: Season Finale: “How to Citizen” with Baratunde Thurston, and Recognizing TV/ Movies that have Centered Race

On the season finale, writer, comedian, podcaster, activist, and Emmy Award-nominated host Baratunde Thurston brings us to the home stretch while providing all the laughs!

Baratunde joins Chevon and Dennis to talk about his early career having worked at the intersections of standup, tech, and activism as a Black man, and how those experiences have shaped his current work on the topics of race, technology, democracy, and climate. He also shares his insights on being a multifaceted creator, the balance of “bringing your whole self to the workplace” as a person of color, and his take on “weaponing discomfort” and “defining white supremacy” to expose the underlying layers of how it's been maintained. Check out the Resources below for information on how to keep up with Baratunde and his upcoming projects, including his podcast “How To Citizen with Baratunde” and the new six-part PBS series, “America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston”.

Chevon and Dennis talk about shows that have centered race over the past year  and give praise to the writers, producers, and organizations working to move the needle on representation. Among the many shows they mention are The Watchmen, Lovecraft Country, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Finally, two big announcements: Dennis has taken on a new position at Race Forward as our Vice President of Narrative, Arts, and Culture, and also we’ve opened registration for our #RaceAnd: Our Present, Our Future youth oriented event taking place on September 25th!

    Snatch

    Snatch
This week, Jerrett catches Sam up on the culture that is Snatch! This one is definitely a hit or miss, since heist isn't Sam's most favorite genre, but Jerrett is hopeful it'll be comedic enough for her funny bone. In What's Entertaining Us we chat about Younger (again), Cougar Town, Lovecraft Country, and the Grammys. And of course, everybody's favorite segment...Who's Hotter?! Follow the show on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/catchupculture/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/catchupculture). Each week, Jerrett and Sam introduce each other to culture they missed out on. They had wildly different upbringings and often have opposite entertainment preferences. Sam was raised on SNL, Half Baked, and Beavis & Butthead, while Jerrett's more conservative household meant the usual Disney fare, westerns, and his favorite thing in the whole world, Star Wars. They've spent their 10 years together rewatching movies and binging TV shows, taking each other on a constant nostalgic ride to relive classic culture.

    Jurnee Smollett

    Jurnee Smollett
A Most Heartfelt Journey... In "Lovecraft Country," Jurnee Smollett as Leti Lewis navigates a horror fantasy adaptation of 1950s America - a dangerous and eerie saga with piercing similarities to our present cultural reality. The HBO series reconnected Smollett with "Underground" series creator, Misha Green, for another brave examination of the African American experience and meaningful television drama. During the 2021 SCAD aTVfest, Smollett returned to SCAD and received the Distinguished Performance Award for her portrayal of Leti Lewis. Her virtual visit included masterclasses and mentorship for current SCAD students, as well as today's interview with Paula Wallace. The two reconnected on Smollet's journey from child actress to leading voice, the research she employs in crafting her characters, and a glimpse into future projects.
