RE-VoLTE: Should we stop the shutdown of 2G/3G to save lives?? (MCH2022)
A lack of VoLTE standardisation breaks voice calling globally. Your brand new smartphone may not work because VoLTE is screwed up by manufacturers and carriers. Voice-over-LTE (4G), voice-over-NR (5G) and voice-over-WiFi have been standardized for years, but now that more and more 2G and 3G networks are shut down by operators, users discover their phones don't work anymore with basic voice calling. The cause is a massive mess in standardization, with a boatload of options and settings and vendors and carriers interpreting it differently, masked by fall-back to 2G and 3G and lack of "international roaming" agreements for VoLTE. Handset manufacturers decided to implement shortcuts (neglecting parts of the standards) or even worse, implementing white-lists with only mayor operators included, so you cannot switch operators anymore and are up for a big surprise while roaming in another country. The result: Even your brand new phone might be unable to provide voice calling in one country but work in another. Voice-calling might work if you're lucky, but you cannot reach 112/911, the eCALL system in your car fails after 2G/3G shutdown or you cannot receive an SMS you need for remote Two-Factor-Authentication while roaming in another country. It's such a disastrous mess, so should we stop the 2G/3G shutdown and get-it-fixed? This is a tale of a disaster still looming in most of Europe for Europeans, as 2G/3G still works as the fall-back mode of your device. As a result nobody noticed that VoLTE was screwed up. However many non-Americans roaming with their phones into the USA suddenly learn their brand new phone isn't working for voice-calls, as AT&T has shut down 2G/3G on July 1st 2022. Problems already did happen to users roaming into countries like India. Users who buy seemingly the same recent model of a supplier like Samsung or Apple, and think they are safe, might be up for a big suprise too. Months of testing needed per device was considered way too cumbersome and too expensive by many, so at best it was halfway done. Manufacturers decided to cope with it by curtailing the myriad of options and settings, included mobile-network-code white-lists or implement short-cuts (neglecting parts of the standards). With white-lists you suddenly are tied to an operator and changing your subscription from a major Mobile Network Operator to an MVNO, makes voice-calling on your brand new smartphone defunct, only allowing data communications working. The "advice" to complainers is just to use voice-apps, but these don't allow Emergency calls. eCALL devices built into cars that dial emergency numbers may work in your home country, but fail when driving in another land on your holiday. Roaming agreements between international carriers have up to now been made only between major operators in large countries, There are merely 50 international VoLTE roaming agreements actually working. If you are from a "small country" like Sweden, you're out of luck in the USA. Voice-over-LTE (4G), voice-over-NR (5G) and voice-over-WiFi have been screwed up by an unholy alliance of handset manufacturers, carriers, the GSM-Association and IMS-core vendors and standardization bodies, who couldn't decide to settle VoLTE down to a limited set of options and prescribe large scale compulsory plugfests and compatibility tests. Regulators have looked away, expecting the "magic of the market would resolve all issues". Some vendors have engaged in favoritism with white-listing or don't deal with MVNOs and MVNEs, as they don't order millions of devices. This talk explains the cause of the mess and highlights the problems lurking in your brand new device. It provides real problems, with devices and disfunctional VoLTE, collected in 2021/2022. We should ask the question whether the announced shutdowns of 2G/3G in most of Europe have to be stopped. Must device manufacturers and carriers be forced to clean-up their act now, and halt their anti-competitive practices and favoritism, before people die as they cannot reach 112/911 during an Emergency? about this event: https://program.mch2022.org/mch2022/talk/7TVHSD/

Blame Your Teachers *SPOILERS* - The 355 (2022)

Blame Your Teachers *SPOILERS* - The 355 (2022)

Welcome to season 3 of Dressed To Kill!!! We're kicking it off with a watch through of The 355 (2022) ... a low-key guide to which movies are Zoom party appropriate.

There's a ~gaping~ hole in the market for movies like this. A Female led, ensemble cast of badass women?! Spice girls with motorcycles and fighting skills?! A variety of international clever and brave personalities... saving the world?!  Yes please!!!

We're extra excited to start our season 3 and the new year 2022, with our first ever coverage of a New Release!

    ---Warning---, there will be spoilers!

We got reeeeaaaalll goofy and PUNny in this episode, and per your feedback, shared more personal stories.

We'd especially love to hear from you on this one as we've heard very few opinions on The 355 so far! Please message us or comment or  wherever comments are sold! (j/k, 90s joke)

On a more honest note, we'd love your opinion on this Q:

Are men less forgiving of female led action movies, than male led action movies?

TLDR: Style and Bond from a Feminist point of view. Hope you enjoy!

348 - Pedal Musicals and a surprise guest

Brian and Blake are back and once again joined by Wampler’s own Richard Oliver in this weeks episode.

Our friends over at JHS have produced a musical about guitar pedals. The guys talk about the production and their take on what the sequel should look like.

Fender has released their version of the Acoustasonic Jazz Master. Blake has his opinion but the conversation swerved into a look at the spectrum of brands, models and types. There are some strong opinions as you could guess.

Richard brings in a very special guest. Lee Harris is the lead guitarist for Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets. It is a great conversation about playing with the Pink Floyd legend and the gear he is using.

Richard’s ES5 midi switcher, Men at Work, and Amanda finds us boring? It’s all in this week’s Chasing Tone Podcast.

Hugh Hewitt: Let’s See a Plan for a 355-Ship Navy

Hugh Hewitt: Let’s See a Plan for a 355-Ship Navy

For years now—long preceding the emergence of candidate Trump or now President Trump—I have been making repeated and urgent calls for the rebuilding of our Naval fleet.

The president sees that need as well—He’s made his own call for a 355-ship navy.

But there’s been little to no progress from the Navy in delivering even a bare-bones plan to realize the president’s objective.

That failure could jeopardize the president’s chances for reelection next year.

Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were the most surprising states that turned from supporting President Barack Obama in 2012 to voting for Donald Trump in 2016. Those three states were critical to putting President Trump in the White House. Each one of those states has infrastructure that would have benefited from an active shipbuilding program today.

President Trump may well come face to face with the consequences of his Pentagon leadership’s failure to implement his oft-promised 355-ship Navy.

The Pentagon should be presenting a shipbuilding plan now.

    Don't forget to remember (glt18)

    Don't forget to remember (glt18)
Anki is a popular memorization software for students. Especially medicine and language students use it frequently for long-term memorization. Given a set of vocabulary, how can you remember it with little effort and long-term? Anki is the most popular representative of SRS (Spaced Repetition Software). This underlying algorithm determines when the next review should take place. Psychological studies show that this method works well. In 2017, I had to study Japanese vocabulary and Kanji in a quite limited amount of time. In this situation, I began to discover memorization software and improved my studying skills. Anki is the most popular SRS representative (Spaced Repetition Software) and some free software under the GNU AGPL v3 (Desktop and Android client). Spaced Repetition is a learning technique similar to the Leitner system. Digital flashcards have two sides: a question and an answer. In a review, the user answers one question after another. In case of Anki, you tap how good you remembered the answer. The SRS algorithm schedules the next review based on your previous rating. In case of a good score, the gaps between reviews increase exponentially. In this talk, I will present my usecase, the interface and its associated projects. about this event: https://c3voc.de

    Does Muscle Scraping Work?

Preston says: He's been seeing a personal trainer for the last month for his IT band and hamstring, they're very tight, he's 28 and never been able to touch his toes. For the last month they've been doing ridiculous stretches, but now his PT is beginning to use Gua Sha - the Chinese practice where they get inside your ligaments and scrape our whatever is built up to get blood flowing. Is muscle scraping good or is it woo woo?

In my response, I recommend: -Graston muscle scrapers How To Detox Your Liver

Michelle says: She's from upstate New York, and she's wondering about liver cleanses. She's been seeing on YouTube that folks have been drinking a concoction of olive oil and lemon juice, then having a bowl movement where stones come out of their body that are supposed to be from their liver. It sounds like a cool way to purge toxins from you liver but she wants to get your thoughts to see if its safe or not?

In my response, I recommend: -NatureCleanse -Liver detox Regenokine Stem Cell Therapy

Ross says: He's wondering what you think of stem cell therapy for treatment of injuries instead of surgery? Traditional doctors only seem to be interested in surgery and don't place much stock at all in the stem cell therapy, and the stem cell guys think stem cells are the way of the future. Regenics is the particular therapy he's thinking about, to repair articular cartilage damage in his knee, and he's wondering what you think?

In my response, I recommend: -BPC-157 -This podcast interview on stem cell therapy with Shawn Stephenson Are Tattoos Unhealthy?

Karen says: She's an ultra purist for what she puts in and on your body, as she knows you are too. She's never heard anyone address tattoos and injecting ink into the body. Is it harmful, is it not? Do you think we'll find out in 20 years that it is? She would love to hear your response!

In my response, I recommend: -National Tattoo Supply, Eternal, Skin Candy, Dynamic and Kuro Sumi -Metal Free -Cyto

    Kubuntu (linuxtag06)

    Kubuntu (linuxtag06)
Kubuntu is a powerful desktop-oriented distribution using KDE on top of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a rock solid distribution based on Debian-based. It follows a 6 months release schedule, with an install/live CD. The Kubuntu install CD will be shipped for free in the next released through the Shipit system, that has already proven useful with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is committed to always be Free and Open-Source software. The KDE Desktop, on which Kubuntu is based, is a Free Desktop environment. It is also a powerful development platform using Trolltech's Qt API. It features lots of great interactive programs such as Amarok, K3B, Konqueror, Scribus, and Krita. The future of KDE is KDE4. This version has been entirely redone on top of the new Qt4. As parts of the Appeal Project, it features a new Desktop, called Plasma, and new multimedia system - Phonon - and a lot of other improvements. The next Kubuntu version, numbered 6.06, is to be released on the 1st of June 2006, under the codename « Dapper Drake ». Among the main improvements in this version are the inclusion of KDE 3.5.2, great changes in the Adept package manager and in System Settings with the Guidance modules, the introduction of the Ubiquity live installer, a better wifi support with Network-Manager, a simplified use and default profile, and the implementation of CJK support with skim. Über den Autor Raphaël Pinson: A former student of ENSMA, a French Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering school, Raphaël Pinson is a now a core developer for the Ubuntu Linux distribution. He focuses on Kubuntu, the KDE-centered version of Ubuntu. He is also the creator of the Ichthux project, which aims to provide a desktop-oriented free and open-source operating system for Christian users and community, based on the Debian operating system. about this event: https://c3voc.de
