    12. You can judge the quality of a decision by the success of the outcome…………

    12. You can judge the quality of a decision by the success of the outcome…………

Many believe that you can judge the quality of a decision by the success of the outcome…………’

    But can you really?’

What if the person making the decision was reckless or had a high propensity for risk-taking, or was a gambler?

And what if the reason there was a successful outcome was mere luck?

What we need to think about is the role the decision or decisions that were made played in the outcome.

What do we know about the biases that may have come into play when a particular decision is being made?

In this episode, we also look at outcome, champion, and experience biases because they can all have a major impact on decision-making.

If you’d like to know more, read ‘You’re about to make a terrible mistake’ by Olivier Sibony.

This is a great journey into understanding how cognitive biases can distort our decision-making processes.

    The Lock Asylum

    The Lock Asylum

    The Lock Asylum
A radio drama by Cara Jennings and Sophie Trott

This compelling and visceral new drama takes inspiration from real histories of ‘fallen women’ in 1787, as they enter The Lock Asylum, a new institution that aimed to morally reform them following treatment for syphilis with mercury. Sophie Trott stars as Ruth Plym, a real patient, who, pregnant and desperate, deals with the restrictive conditions she finds herself in. She tries to bond with Martha, Mary and Sarah, her traumatised and volatile fellow inmates - young adults, trying follow their dreams in London town, the richest city in the world. They’ve been chewed up and spat out by a society where life is cheap and options limited, if you are female and poor. Will they take up this second chance to become devout Christian servants or wives? Or will they stick two fingers up at the proto prison, and go back to a life of freedom and risk? Will anyone survive beyond the age of 25?

    Media Masters - David Starkey

    Media Masters - David Starkey

Dr David Starkey is a historian and broadcaster. Developing an interest in the past through grammar school and a scholarship to Cambridge and a lecturer in Tudor history at LSE for nearly 30 years, his trenchant opinions and unforgiving style quickly caught the eye of broadcasters and journalists. His popular television documentaries include ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ and ‘Monarchy’, and his appearances on Radio 4's ‘The Moral Maze’ earned him the reputation as “the rudest man in Britain”. In this in-depth interview, he argues that the rise of historical programmes has done nothing to reverse the decline in academic standards, discusses how his uncompromising nature has taken him through his career, and reveals how a passion for tradition means he is a staunch Conservative – despite his working class roots.

    Britain's Puzzlingly Poor Productivity

    Britain's Puzzlingly Poor Productivity

'The only way to have your cake and eat it is to keep growing the cake’.

Listen to this fascinating panel from the YF Economy and Finance network on Britain’s productivity, as part of their ‘A Decade Since the Great Recession’ series.

Since the great recession in 2008, the UK’s productivity growth, especially labour productivity, has been weaker than in many other OECD countries. So much so that the gap between actual and pre-crisis outputs was nearly 20% lower per hour at the end of 2016 than in the previous decade. The panellists will be discussing their views on this and the interventions they think could boost performance ten years after the crash. This will include a deep dive into the drivers of productivity, potential labour and investment policies and how businesses can train and invest in their workforce.

The event was recorded on June 13th at Fabian HQ.

    Guests:

John Heap, Managing Director, Institute of Productivity
Dr. Anna Valero, ESRC Innovation Fellow - Growth, LSE
    Hubert Wu, Behavioural Insights Team
Marion Mayer, Economy & Finance Network Events Officer (chair)
