The Films of the Late, Great CHRISTOPHER GEORGE

The Films of the Late, Great CHRISTOPHER GEORGE

Whether it was one of his many appearances on television, or one of the many genre films he did in the late 70's and early 80's, Christopher George left an indelible mark in television and film.  In much the same way that actor Robert Forster brought a believable everyman quality to a variety of roles, Christopher George was able to slip comfortably from drama to action and horror in a way that made him relatable, and the material believable.  He was a rugged, handsome, charismatic actor who elevated every project he appeared in.  He should be held in the same regard as actors like Roy Scheider, Robert Forster and Lance Henriksen.  Though his body of work included war films, comedies, sci-fi and action, for episode #93 we will focus on the prison drama, nature-run-amok, vigilante justice, zombie apocalypse, classic slasher, ninja and occult films he did from 1973-1983.  Whether you're new to his work, or a long-time admirer, please join My Haunted Head in a celebration of the films of Christopher George.

This week in physical media with Peter Sobczynski begins with a little argument over the new 4K release of another John Hughes film. There is no disagreement that the new work from Nicole Holofcener is worth grabbing. Horror fans get works from Lucio Fulci, Jean Rollin and Michael Crichton. Ralph Bakshi finally gets a Blu-ray release for his animated musical ode and you can also see Louis Malle’s controversial film with Brooke Shields and where that George C. Scott meme comes from courtesy of Paul Schrader.

When a terrorist’s body, infected with a stolen chemical, is cremated by the US military, a virus is unintentionally released into the atmosphere over a small island.

It’s time to return to the gloriously gory realm of the Italian zombie movie. Whoa-boy! Zombie 3 (aka Zombi 3, aka Zombie Flesh Eaters 2), is a sequel to Fulci’s Zombi 2 (1979) in name only, much as Fulci’s Zombi 2 (known as Zombie in the U.S.) is a “sequel” to Romero’s Zombi (1978, known as Dawn of the Dead in the States). Alternate film titles, am I right? Woof.

Regardless, Fulci does return to direct this feature but it’s eventually co-directed by Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragrasso when Fulci leaves the Philippines for . . . reasons. What about those reasons? Or the story? Or the locations? Or the effects work? Or the acting? Or the . . . well, you’re just going to have to check out what the 80s Grue Crew have to say about this latterday Fulci effort.

Hey, it’s still Fulci which makes it worth a watch in the Decades of Horror book. At the time of this writing, Zombie 3 is available to stream with ads from Tubi and The Roku Channel; by subscription from Flix Fling, Night Flight, or Screambox; and from multiple PPV sources. Zombie 3 is also available as a Blu-ray disc from Severin Films.

THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (1981) – Episode 209 – Decades Of Horror 1980s

“Why do you keep telling me to go on with those pills? I feel fine. I never felt better! My nerves are fine the way they are!” If you moved into a house in the middle of a cemetery with an actual tomb inside the house, and it was the site of a murder-suicide, your nerves might be shot too. Join your faithful Grue-Crew – Bill Mulligan, Crystal Cleveland, and Jeff Mohr  – as they check out the final entry in Lucio Fulci’s Gates of Hell Trilogy, The House by the Cemetery (1981).

A New England home is terrorized by a series of murders, unbeknownst to the guests that a gruesome secret is hiding in the basement.

    IMDb

The House by the Cemetery, aka Quella villa accanto al cimitero (original title), is Jeff’s pick and he loves it. Despite the weird voice dubbed for Bob, the young boy in the story, he digs the atmospheric music, the long-drawn-out kill scenes, and what turns out to be a fairly coherent story, at least for a Fulci film. Crystal also loves The House by the Cemetery. Besides having maggots, gruesome kills, a weird story, and a creepy kid, it’s very well shot.

The little boy is not cute, according to Bill, and he too describes the horrible voice dubbing of said boy. Though The House by the Cemetery is not his favorite of the trilogy, he still thinks it’s pretty cool. Despite the frequent scenes of characters walking around the house calling out names, it is pretty to look at and really well made.

The Decades of Horror Grue Crews always have something to say about Lucio Fulci’s work. Here are the Decades of Horror episodes discussing Fulci’s work:

As of this writing, The House by the Cemetery is available to stream from Shudder. In terms of physical media, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD discs from Blue Underground are available.

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Clash of the Titans (1981) with a stellar cast and, of course, the magic of Ray Harryhausen!

225 City of the Living Dead/Ein Zombie hing am Glockenseil (1980)

225 City of the Living Dead/Ein Zombie hing am Glockenseil (1980)

Then Is Now Ep 77 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Zombie 2

Then Is Now Ep 77 - 13 Days of Hallowtober - Zombie 2

John Grace, from the Midnight Movie Cowboys podcast, returns! He previously joined us on the Kung Fu Zombies episode as well as joining Patsy and I on our other show, the East Meets the West! This is the penultimate episode of our yearly event called 13 Days of Hallowtober in which we've been discussing modern zombie films, that is, zombie movies that came after or were inspired by George Romero's 1968 horror film, Night of the Living Dead. His movie inspired a couple of generations of filmmakers, and while his “rules” for zombies have changed from time to time, the spirit of his films continues on.

And nothing is more closer to his films than the one we are going to talk about today, and while it's dubious in its claims of being a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, it nonetheless is a fun, scary, and gory romp in the world of the zombie apocalypse!

I'm talking, of course, about Lucio Fulci's 1979 flick, Zombi aka Zombi 2 aka Zombie Flesh Eaters. A New York reporter (Ian McCulloch) follows a woman (Tisa Farrow) to an island where a doctor (Richard Johnson) faces an epidemic of the undead. It's got roots in both the Romero films and Voodoo, so join us for a fascinating look at a rare gem!
