Women Mind the Water Artivist Series Angela Abshier

Women Mind the Water Artivist Series Angela Abshier

Angela Abshier is a commercial lawyer and founder Sail to Shelter, a not-for-profit that repurposes elite and super yacht sails into shade and shelter for humanitarian purposes. Angela came up with the idea for Sail to Shelter after being introduced to offshore racing. She envisioned that the strong but light weight fabrics might be useful in settings where permanent construction is too costly and building supplies might not be readily available or suitable. A sail is large enough to cover a soccer field. Because the sailing community has yet to step up and take responsibility for their sails 97% end up in landfills. Angela estimates each sail is equivalent to 10,000 water bottles.

The sails are made from polyester material which cannot be recycled. Angela characterizes some of the material as extraordinary and had the vision to use the decommissioned sails for humanitarian purposes. Sail to Shelter is currently installing sails in Maui for a number of different solutions.

Angela believes that when a system is broken and you have an idea of how to fix it or change it or make it better, it’s worth it to step in and make it happen. After she was introduced to sailing and she saw the massive super yachts with their huge sails, her creative mind took hold. She learned that some of the material is extraordinary and yet it had a limited life span. She wanted to make a positive difference with the decommissioned sails that otherwise ended up as landfill. Angela has invested her own human capital and worked with architects and others to find ways to use the sails for humanitarian purposes. One of the first projects for Sail to Shelter is installing sails in Maui to answer a number of different issues. Maui suffered a devastating fire in August 2023.

Taking action and embracing imperfection: Encouragement for a healthier, happier you with Dawn Dimicco

Taking action and embracing imperfection: Encouragement for a healthier, happier you with Dawn Dimicco

In today's episode with Dawn DiMicco we talked about personal setbacks, challenges, and strategies for making positive changes in one's life.

The Power of Seeking Help and Creating a Plan

My guest, Dawn DiMicco, shared her personal setbacks and challenges. She spoke about a moment of physical exhaustion that led her to realize she needed to make a change. Despite being a former all-American athlete, she found herself winded while making her bed. This moment was a wake-up call, leading to feelings of shame, embarrassment, and anger.

The biggest challenge for Dawn was acknowledging she couldn't do it alone and needed help. She emphasized the importance of having a plan to follow and eliminating barriers that hinder action. She also highlighted the significance of being a great teammate to oneself and building a support system for success.

i related to Dawn's experiences and discussed the importance of coaching oneself and making choices that align with one's goals. We also touched on the importance of eliminating decision fatigue, a common barrier to achieving our goals.

Rethinking Fitness: Lifting Weights Over Cardio
We debunked the misconception that cardio is necessary for weight loss and toning. Instead, we emphasized the importance of lifting heavy weights to build muscle and increase calorie burn even at rest. Dawn advised finding a coach or mentor who has achieved success in a healthy way and starting with simple, sustainable habits.

I shared my own weight loss journey, which took two years and focused on creating new habits and making incremental changes. We also discussed the challenges of maintaining weight loss and the need for a support system.

Celebrating Small Victories and Understanding Personal Motivation
Dawn shared a story about a friend who was feeling down about her day. She helped her see the wins and accomplishments she had, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and celebrating small victories each day.

She also highlighted the significance of understanding why certain goals and changes matter to us personally. Dawn shared a story about a client who wanted to lose weight so she could ride a roller coaster with her daughter, highlighting the power of having a strong motivation.

We touched on the impact our self-talk and body image can have on ourselves and those around us, emphasizing the need to be kind to ourselves and appreciate our bodies.

Embracing Imperfection and Focusing on What We Can Control
Dawn shared her experience with a total knee replacement and the challenges she faced during her recovery. She adapted her workouts and focused on other parts of her body while her leg healed. She emphasized the importan

    65 - Reimagine Your Career

    65 - Reimagine Your Career

Cindy Esliger discusses feeling stuck in our careers and the potential to change where we currently are to grow into a new career. We have the power to reinvent ourselves and our careers at any time. Cindy offers guidance on how to identify what drives us so we can successfully reassess and reinvent our careers.

Reinvention of self and transitioning to a new career is not easy, Cindy will be the first to say that, but it is entirely possible and something to consider. Our careers should align with what matters most to us in life. Do we know what matters to us? Cindy advises reflecting on our current situations to identify what feels stale and what values and passions we hold that aren’t being currently fulfilled.

Cindy shares a lot of ideas on how to assess our current careers and how to start the move forward into what we truly want to be doing. There are practical steps we can take. It might feel scary to start a journey of change because change unsettles us. So Cindy offers four strategies for overcoming fear and getting support: 1. Reframe negative self talk, 2. Practice self compassion, 3. Seek support, and 4. Visualize success. She is here to guide us through the transition with advice and experience.

    Why Do You Work?

    Why Do You Work?

This week's episode is all about work or anti work! We are answering the question of what we do for work, why we work, how much we work and what work means to us! Britney may have told us all to Work B*tch - but what are you working for? What would you do if you didn't have to work, and would you really be happy if all you had was free time? Is Anti Work just a bunch of lazy people who don't want to do anything? Could society survive if we all became Anti work?

SO many questions, it almost feels like hard work! But don't worry our usual jokes and laughter are still a feature in today's episode!

4th Sunday of Lent: Father Eseke

4th Sunday of Lent: Father Eseke

(March 27, 2022) Father Anthony Eseke, Priest-in-Residence at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, drew a parallel between a conventional five-step "hero's journey" and our own Lenten journey.  Going though all the steps, Father Eseke emphasized that our heavenly Father always awaits us with His arms outstretched, asking us to "make a change."

Our prayer, then, shall be that our Lord will bless us on our spiritual journey, Father Eseke said,  "and that  our good Lord will give us the grace, and the strength to say ito ourselves: This time, grant us Lord the grace to change."

2020 is officially over and a new calendar year is upon us. 2021 is here and that means saying goodbye to everything to do with 2020 right? Well, not exactly. While many of us want to just throw 2020 in the trash, we can't throw everything away.

We take memories with us. We take successes. But most importantly, we take lessons learned. What things did you learn in 2020? We all learned a lot. We learned a lot about ourselves, about others and about our world.

In this episode of The Heart of Leadership Podcast, we take a look at the lessons that we learned in 2020 and I share the lessons that 2020 taught me, including an original spoken word piece.
