Episode 51: Málaga, Spain — A Resilient City of Culture and Tourism

Episode 51: Málaga, Spain — A Resilient City of Culture and Tourism

Welcome to today’s episode of "Places People Purpose." I'm absolutely thrilled to kick off this new series of episodes as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Spain and Portugal. We've got some incredible stories to share, so let's dive right in!

    🌍 Episode Highlights:

    - Malaga – A City Steeped in History Let's dive into the captivating history of Malaga, a gem on the southern coast of Spain. Founded by the Phoenicians in 770 BCE, it stands as one of the world's oldest cities. "Malaka," as it was known then, was a bustling Phoenician trading post on the Mediterranean coast. The city's history is a tapestry of different civilizations.

    - Spotlight on the Phoenicians Our story takes a detour to delve into the Phoenicians, an ancient civilization with origins in the eastern Mediterranean. Renowned seafarers and traders, they established trade routes across the Mediterranean and left a lasting legacy, including the Phoenician alphabet. Their influence on the ancient world was undeniable.

    - Shifts in Rulership Over the centuries, Malaga saw the rise and fall of various rulers – Greeks, Romans, and Moors. The Moors left a remarkable imprint on the city, with architectural marvels like the Alcazaba Fortress. Malaga thrived as a cultural and economic hub under their rule.

    - The Spanish Inquisition The Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, marked the end of Moorish rule in 1487 CE. Malaga played a pivotal role in the Spanish Inquisition, a dark chapter in history that saw the persecution of non-Christians. It expanded its scope to include perceived heretics, using tribunals and torture to enforce conformity. This period led to the expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain in 1492 and 1502, respectively.

    - Decline and Change By the 18th century, the Spanish Inquisition's influence waned, thanks to Enlightenment ideas and political changes. It wasn't until 1834 that it was formally abolished, ending nearly 350 years of religious terror.

    - Post-Inquisition Malaga Malaga's history saw periods of prosperity and hardship, including the devastating Spanish Civil War. Under General Franco's rule, it lived in isolation and authoritarianism. The transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975 heralded a new era of modernization, economic development, and political liberalization.

    - Today's Malaga Fast forward to today, and Malaga stands as a testament to resilience. A cultural and tourist hotspot, it boasts a rich heritage, stunning coastline, and a thriving arts scene. The city celebrates famous citizens like Pablo Picasso and hosts numerous museums, including the Picasso Museum. Its sunny climate, beaches, and diverse cultural heritage make it a magnet for global visitors.

That wraps up today’s episode of "Places People Purpose." We hope you enjoyed the deep dive into Malaga's history. Join us next time as we venture to Cordoba, Spain, continuing our quest to create connections to our world. Until then, keep exploring, and we'll see you on the next episode!

    Graphic Designer Victoria O'May

    Graphic Designer Victoria O'May

Brazilian creative Victoria was working in advertising in London when in 2013 she fancied a change.

A change of pace, country and language, and to help her do that she figured she’d go freelance in Spain.

After 3 years she took a job in an agency. Four years on she felt ready to freelance again. A pandemic and motherhood making the flexibility of working from home even more appealing.

Second time around Victoria felt much more prepared. In her positioning, her processes, her dealings with clients… in running her own business.

In this conversation we cover, amongst other things:

    • the importance of a network of fellow freelancers
    • getting to know clients properly
    • working around having a child
    • how some things you want to do just can't be done right now, and that's okay...

CATCH UP – Convicted cocaine trafficker Luis Navia called in!

CATCH UP – Convicted cocaine trafficker Luis Navia called in!

Pure Narco! Convicted cocaine trafficker Luis Navia talks life in the fast lane. He’s written a book outlining the perils of drug smuggling (like how he was kidnapped three times and almost got fed to a bunch of hungry crocodiles!) Nathan, Nat & Shaun also ask the all-important question… what did he spend his millions on?

Safety never was the number one priority when we were students, which is exactly how a UK girl got herself into a VERY sticky situation. Inspired by a call to the emergency services to rescue her from a tumble dryer, the guys hear about the times you had to call the “stupidity hotline” for help.

Nathan Nat & Shaun also get the latest from the United States, where Donald Trump is putting other people’s lives at risk by parading around the streets with corona virus… no surprises there.

Finally, poor old great grandfather George has caused quite the scene out the front of a Malaga warehouse fire. It’s a shame for him that news cameras were there to capture the chaos, but a great result for us as we get to talk about it (because it’s kind of hilarious).

    #22 Confidence

    #22 Confidence

In this episode of The Teachify English Podcast Lewis talks about confidence, how to improve it, when he feels confident and he lists some techniques or tactics to become more confident.  As always, below you can find 10 words or phrases which we believe to be rather complicated and we've provided some synonyms for them.

    1. Cut to the chase - get to the point.
    2. Worth - value.
    3. It's worth it - it's a good decision in terms of time, money or effort.
    4. Awkward - uncomfortable or embarrassing.
    5. Whereas - however, on the other hand.
    6. Excel in/at something - be excellent at.
    7. Go outside of your comfort zone - do things that make you feel uncomfortable.
    8. Look forward to - be excited about.
    9. Boost - increase, rise.
    10. At all costs - no matter the cost, effort or time.

In addition to that, Lewis finished the podcast with another joke, as usual.

    Whats' Forrest Gump's password? 1forrest1.

Thanks for listening and keep up the good work!
