Austin and Monica Mangelson: Digital Nomads & Life Purpose Coaches

In this episode we meet a couple that call themselves: digital nomads. Digital Nomads are people whose work is fully virtual and therefore they can live anywhere in the world.  They both work online as life purpose coaches, helping clients while traveling the world through their online business: austinandmonica.com. Their branding message is, “helping you work online and travel the world”.  As proud digital nomads they have traveled to 10 countries, and counting.  I was able to catch them online through Zoom before their next trip to Peru.  Please help me in welcoming Austin and Monica Mangelson.

Master Acquisition Entrepreneurship as a Digital Nomad with Bakari Akil, Nomad Noir

Master Acquisition Entrepreneurship as a Digital Nomad with Bakari Akil, Nomad Noir

Being a digital nomad and an entrepreneur is a match made in heaven. You live on your terms while working from any part of the world you want. Bakari Akil is the perfect example. This week, he joins A.J. to discuss his unique approach to acquisition entrepreneurship and how he’s managing various business ventures remotely, all while exploring the world and building a community of like-minded nomads.

    About Bakari Akil:

Bakari Akil is a seasoned entrepreneur and a full-time digital nomad. He’s currently traveling the globe while running his ventures remotely. Bakari is the Managing Director of Graves Hall Capital, an investment firm he founded to acquire businesses. He's also the founder of Nomad Noir, a platform inspiring black digital nomads to pursue this incredible lifestyle.

Bakari is an expert in sourcing, evaluating, and executing multi-million dollar acquisitions. In addition to all his ventures, he’s a visiting lecturer at Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management. He teaches MBA candidates how to buy a business and pursue acquisition entrepreneurship.

    Episode highlights:

    • The digital nomad lifestyle is very popular among remote entrepreneurs. But making such a huge transition may seem daunting. It can be overwhelming, from setting up your business adequately to lacking a support system. However, if you strive to live abroad, you can always seek help from experienced travelers such as Bakari and programs like Remote Year. (01:50)
    • Despite what some people think, you can become a digital nomad at any age. It’s one of the most liberating and inspiring lifestyles that allows you to travel the world while still working full-time. As long as you have the flexibility to pursue digital nomadism with your job and the income to sustain you, you can embark on this incredible journey anytime. (04:19)
    • Like other business ventures, acquisition entrepreneurship also has its challenges and obstacles. But what truly defines you during these hard times is your mindset. Perseverance and resilience are key to success in entrepreneurship. You can overcome almost any business challenge by staying resilient and pushing forward. To get better at it, adopt a can-do attitude and start believing that success is the only option. (12:32)
    • Being a digital nomad is a life-changing experience that impacts you both personally and professionally. It helps to master the technical steps to build a rock-solid business, broaden your perspective, and see the world through new lenses. Ultimately, this gives you a profound sense of fulfillment, making you a more inspired leader and a better entrepreneur. (18:44)
    • Some aspects of acquisition entrepreneurship require your physical presence. However, in most cases, a stable connection will do the trick. In reality, if you’re considering becoming a digital nomad, effective leadership and strong communication skills are even more valuable for entrepreneurs on this journey. (22:03)

    Bakari’s best advice for entrepreneurs:

“This has to happen. There's no other way I'm going to make this particular thing happen. If you could pull that kind of energy into a goal, and you have the staying power when things get tough, more often than not, you'll be able to accomplish the thing you're trying to accomplish.” (13:13)

Že veš kateri so?

    GOVORIVA O:

    • Slovenci in “nevoščljivost”, “strah pred uspehom” in “vsi moramo biti enaki”

#10: Remote work, employees’ happiness and forsaking a venture round - Sarah Hawley

#10: Remote work, employees’ happiness and forsaking a venture round - Sarah Hawley

The pandemic seemed to have made remote work a common place. It even felt like the world would never be the same again. Yet, some companies including tech giants like Google announced returning their workforce back to offices. Others introduce a hybrid mode that requires presence in the office a few days a week. Remote work, inevitable for many in times of crisis, turned out to be hard to embrace when this crisis dissipated. Why? And how can we truly reap its benefits?

I discuss this topic with Sarah Hawley, CEO and Founder of Growmotely, a platform connecting companies with remote-first professionals. Sarah shares her story of turning her company remote in 2014 when most of the world would find this a bizarre idea. For her, it was a courageous step to freedom, to being the creator of her own destiny.

    Topics we explore:

    • Fears that leaders have around remote work and how we can overcome them and start building a high-performing distributed team.
    • How employees’ happiness translates into business results.
    • How remote work can help humanity to break all sorts of barriers and fight unconscious bias.
    • How raising venture capital can be a terrible energy drain for a founder that yields no financial results but leads to experimentation and exploration of alternative funding mechanisms.

    About Sarah Hawley:

Sarah Hawley is the CEO and Founder of Growmotely, the world's first end-to-end platform that facilitates conscious companies in hiring equally-conscious remote professionals - of all nationalities - into long-term remote jobs.

Driven by her passion for the freedom that remote work provides professionals and companies alike, she is trailblazing the space - as a thought leader and creator - where remote work, conscious leadership, and personal and professional growth intersect.

Before Growmotely, she started and successfully sold multiple companies for seven-figure sums. Sarah is mother to 1-year-old Luka, and author of the book 'Conscious Leadership: a Journey from Ego to Heart'.  Sarah is based in Austin (Texas), USA.

    About Darya Kamkalova:

Darya wears many hats: she is podcaster, a data industry professional, a startup mentor, a co-founder of Manifest Taproom (a craft beer bar in Berlin), and a speaker.

Her experience in the data industry spans 10 years, five continents and such domains as data monetisation & acquisition, data product development, strategic partnerships as well as data marketplace business operations.

Darya has been driving or supporting various projects empowering women since 2013. She is based in Berlin.

    Govoriva o:

    • Življenje na Madeiri kot digitalni nomad.
    • Cene nastanitev in transport na Madeiri
    • Vključevanje v skupnosti in odnosi z domačini.
    • Hrana in restavracije na Madeiri.
    • Prva vas za digitalne nomade; Ponta do Sol.
    • Nova destinacija in postavljanje življenja.
    • Samota na potovanjih in odnosi z ljudmi
    • Slovo od ljudi in navezanost na potovanjih.
    • Zakaj bi vsak moral nekaj časa preživeti v samoti?
    • “Ko se odpreš svetu, postaneš dovzeten za izkoriščanje in prizadetost?”
    • "Imej odprto srce, a zdravo postavljaj meje."
    • Polna prisotnost v odnosu zaradi minljivosti.
    • “Copywriting” in možnost zaslužka.

#6 Kako zaslužiti in potovati kot digitalni nomad

#6 Kako zaslužiti in potovati kot digitalni nomad
