Remember Nintendo 64? (with Wolfgang Van Halen of Mammoth WVH)

Remember Nintendo 64? (with Wolfgang Van Halen of Mammoth WVH)

This week we are thrilled to sit down with Wolfgang Van Halen, who you probably know from playing bass in a little band called Van Halen as well as fronting his own band, Mammoth WVH. We discuss what it was like growing up with Eddie Van Halen as your father (and why he didn't want Wolfgang skateboarding), formative musical experiences and weigh the odds of a Jonah Bayer signature guitar. We also get into Wolfgang's other obsession: Video games. We discuss the way Nintendo 64 paved the way for this hobby, the difference between Mario/Wario and the glory days of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. We also get into how Wolfgang's mom Valerie Bertinelli helped support his gaming habit (and how he tries to scare her with games today), why being an adult means you can basically do whatever you want and Vanessa wonders why her dentist felt the need to clean the stains on the back of her teeth? We also play a round of YESTOLGIA OR NOSTALGIA where we discuss the reboot of the video game "Crazy Taxi," the dramatic update of "Bewitched" and the return of Wendy's Crispy Panko Fish Sandwich. Wolfgang also lets us in on the secret reason why his dad always ordered the Filet-O-Fish when stopping for fast food. Be sure to check out Mammoth EVH's latest album "Mammoth II" and catch them on tour right now! If you're interested in learning more about the SA-126 guitar, check that out HERE!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E28

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E28

Episode 28 of Season 6 went out live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 13 July 2023.  Following on from The Rock Doctor’s Rock Power Play Turbo show it was necessary to keep the pace.  It has been freezing in Johannesburg this week with Temperatures getting down below zero and we actually had snow which happens about once every 20 years.  It made sense to kick off with The Boomtown Rats ‘Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero’.

The big news this week was an interview with the multitalented SA Rock legend Mark Haze.  Mark had some kind words to say about the old days when I met him at the very, very start of his musical career.  Our 5 minute interview went on a bit longer and would have gone even longer if we didn’t call time in the interest of the music.  We were incredibly privileged to hear Gareth Haze’s new track ‘Home’.  Mark is busy working with Gareth on his debut album, really looking forward to hearing it in a few months' time.

The Immortals section of the show featured Dire Straits and the opening track of their third album Making Movies.  The track is of course ‘Tunnel of Love’, it is an amazing preview of how Mark Knopfler was developing as a songwriter and showed the path to their mega-selling Love Over Gold album.

This week's Ultimate Challenge was a problem.  We looked at 1983 and started with 6 albums.  I managed to whittle it down during the week by leaving out Ozzy Osbourne’s Bark At The Moon and Mötley Crüe’s Shout At The Devil.  This left us with Def Leppard – Pyromania, Iron Maiden – Piece of Mind, Dio – Holy Diver, and Metallica – Kill ‘Em All.  So very hard, Pyromania sold the most by far, Holy Diver is one of the most beloved debut albums of all time, and Kill ‘Em All changed the face of metal forever.  It also marks the point where the Ultimate Challenge ended.  Not the concept but the name, it is now known as The Diabolical Challenge.

Artists featured:  The Boomtown Rats, Skid Row, Ratt, U.D.O., Buckcherry, Extreme, Mammoth WVH, Joel Hoekstra, Disturbed, Shinedown, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Rory Gallagher, Billy F. Gibbons, The Black Cat Bones, Ignite, Seether, Godsmack, Gareth Haze with Mark Haze, 12th Avenue, Megadeth, Dire Straits, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Butch Walker, David Bowie, The Clash, Tom Petty, Wolfmother, Badlands, winery Dogs, Greta Van Fleet

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E36

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E36

Episode 36 kicked off with Journey and 'Anyway You Want It', live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 8 Sep 2022.  In quick succession, we heard from Mammoth WVH, Edguy and Blackfoot.  If any of you caught the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show you will probably have been suitably impressed with Mammoth WVH’s Wolfgang Van Halen, the kids got daddy’s chops that is for sure.  From there we went all military with 'Gods of War' from Bruce Dickinson and 'Military Man' from Gary Moore.

While we were on air the news came through that the Queen had died so that led to ZZ Top with 'Have You Heard'?  And Status Quo with 'Mystery Song' and then into Tom Petty with a track called ‘Flirting With Time’ which is what we are all doing.  Tom Morello’s cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Blind Willie McTell went down really well, definitely a show highlight there.  We also checked out a band I discovered about 14 years ago and I don’t think I have played on TSORR, a band called Biomechanical.  The new stuff came from Alter Bridge and Ozzy Osbourne.  The next bit was great, it was all based around a couple of tracks from the Netflix documentary Trainwreck, Woodstock 99.  You need to see it, we took a listen to Limp Bizkit with 'Break Stuff’, Korn with ‘Blind’ and Kid Rock with ‘Batwitadaba’.  There was some good music at the turn of the century that’s for sure.

From there we cracked a bit of UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers covering The Specials classic  ‘Doesn’t Make it Alright', some Steve Jones off the Fire & Gasoline album and a cover of Bob Marley’s 'Redemption Song' courtesy of Joe Strummer.  We went heavy with the title track off the brand new Megadeth album called The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead and then brand new from Parkway Drive and a track called ‘The Greatest Fear’.  SA music from The Black Cat Bones and Asylum Kids took us to a lekker messy ending with Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, and the find of the year, a band called The Halo Effect,  We took a listen to the opening track 'Shadowminds'.  And that ladies and gentlemen was that for season 5 episode 36.  Please share the podcasts with anyone who may be interested.  Thanks for listening \m/

Artists featured:  Journey, Mammoth WVH, Edguy, Blackfoot, Bruce Dickinson, Gary Moore, Q5, Slaughter, Sons of Liberty, The Dead Daisies, ZZ Top, Tom Morello & The Nightwatchmen, Status Quo, Tom petty, Biomechanical, Kiss, Ryan Adams, Dio, Alter Bridge, Ozzy Osbourne, (feat Zakk Wylde), Theory of a Deadman Mick Jagger, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock, Stiff Little Fingers, Steve Jones, Joe Strummer, Nazareth, Megadeth, Parkway Drive, Asylum Kids, The Black Cat Bones, The L.A. Ep. 107: Shallow Graves: Diggin' 2021

Kevin is on his own again… While 2020 was a rotten year, it did allow artists time off the road to focus on giving us a plethora of albums in the world of Rock n’ Punk n’ Metal in 2021. This year was “unpredictable” at best, and like we stated last year: Nothing gets us through hard times like music! Some of these groups and albums we’ve talked about before, but we thought it was worth the time to recognize all of the amazing recorded output of 2021!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look back on another tumultuous year that had its ups and downs, but mostly ups for the world of rock n’ punk n’ metal (minus the touring). In celebration of the New Year, we wanted to find some nuggets of joy from the last 12-months. We hope everyone’s families are safe, and that you are able to take some time to kick back and rock with us! Happy New Year everyone!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E18

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E18

Episode 18 of Season 4 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 7 May 2021, it is hard to believe it is May already, the year is flying by.  It was a smooth running rock 'n' rolling bit of perfection, starting with W.A.S.P's 'I'm Alive' off Inside The Electric Circus.  Other heavyweights we listened to were ACDC with 'Sin City', one of their best with Bon Scott at his finest, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Motörhead, and Irom Maiden.

The highlight of the show for me was Dan Patlansky with ' My Dear Boy' off his most recent album Perfection Kills.   I pointed out that Dan is not only one of the best blues guitarists in the world, an incredible teacher and all-round decent human being but also has the best guitar tone around.  The track demonstrated that as did the next song 'Couldn't Stand the Weather ' by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Punk was covered by the Sex Pistols and the UK Subs and the new stuff came from Thunder, Alice Cooper, and Great Van Fleet.  The Thunder album was released this week and is called All The Right Noises, it is very strong.  Other notable mentions were the Gojira track called 'Born For One Thing' off Fortitude.  It is a monster of an album, the drumming is amazing, its going to be Best Metal Album of the year in all the Metal publications I reckon.  More form that next week.

Artists featured:  W.A.S.P., Cinderella, The Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow, Rory Gallagher, Murderdolls, Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Kris Barras Band, Thunder, ACDC, Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet, Sex Pistols, UK Subs, Anti-Flag, Jerry Cantrell, Mammoth WVH, Alice Cooper, Gojira, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Red Dragon Cartel, Skid Row, , Richie Sambora, Dan Patlansky, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Metallica, Pink Floyd, The Horrible Crowes, Hellyeah, Motörhead, Adrenaline Mob, Zakk Wylde, Tool, Linkin Park, Bush
