On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by robotics engineer, Wyatt Newman, and executive director of the Twin Institute, Michael Grieves, to discuss industrial artificial intelligence.

Dr. Michael Grieves is an internationally renowned expert on Digital Twins, a concept that he originated, and organizational digital transformation. His focus is on product development, engineering, systems engineering and complex systems, manufacturing, especially additive manufacturing, and operational sustainment. Dr. Grieves has written the seminal books on Product Lifecycle Management and the seminal papers and chapters
on Digital Twins, He has consulted and/or done research at some of the top global organizations, including NASA, Boeing, Unilever, Newport News Shipbuilding, and General Motors.

In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Grieves has over five decades of extensive executive and deep technical experience in both global and entrepreneurial technology and manufacturing companies. He has been a senior executive at both Fortune 1000 companies and entrepreneurial organizations during his career. He founded and took public a national systems integration company and subsequently served as its audit and
compensation committee chair. Dr. Grieves has substantial board experience, including serving on the boards of public companies in the United States, China, and Japan.

Dr. Grieves earned his B.S. Computer Engineering from Michigan State University, an MBA from Oakland University, and his doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.

Wyatt Newman is a professor in the EECS Dept at Case Western Reserve University. He has multidisciplinary degrees from Harvard, M.I.T. and Columbia. His research in robotics and intelligent systems spans over 30 years and includes 12 patents, over 150 publications, and a new textbook on the Robot Operating System. He is a former NSF Young Investigator and has been a visiting fellow at Princeton, U. Edinburgh and U. Hong Kong. He led robotics teams in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge for autonomous vehicles and in the 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge. Dr. Newman is a technical advisor to Robo Global.

She is pursuing a career in clinical translational research in lymphoma.

Nicholas Eberstadt holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he researches and writes extensively on demographics and economic development generally, and more specifically on international security in the Korean peninsula and Asia. Domestically, he focuses on poverty and social well-being. Dr. Eberstadt is also a senior adviser to the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR).

His many books and monographs include “Poverty in China” (IDI, 1979); “The Tyranny of Numbers” (AEI Press, 1995); “The End of North Korea” (AEI Press, 1999); “The Poverty of the Poverty Rate” (AEI Press, 2008); and “Russia’s Peacetime Demographic Crisis” (NBR, 2010). His latest book is “Men Without Work: America’s Invisible Crisis” (Templeton Press, 2016).

He has offered invited testimony before Congress on numerous occasions and has served as consultant or adviser for a variety of units within the US government. His appearances on radio and television range from NPR to CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”

Mr. Eberstadt has a PhD in political economy and government, an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government, and an AB from Harvard University. In addition, he holds a master of science from the London School of Economics.

In 2012, Mr. Eberstadt was awarded the prestigious Bradley Prize.

Jennifer Hernandez has practiced land use and environmental law for more than 30 years, and leads Holland & Knight's West Coast Land Use and Environmental Group. Ms. Hernandez divides her time between the firm's San Francisco and Los Angeles offices.

Ms. Hernandez is the only California lawyer ranked by her clients and peers in Chambers USA in the top tier of both land use/zoning and environmental lawyers. In addition, she was recognized as the top environmental litigator of the year in the San Francisco Bay Area by Best Lawyers, and received a California Lawyer of the Year award from the State Bar of California for her work on California's largest and most innovative land use and conservation agreement between her private landowner client and five major environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council. She also has received numerous civil rights awards for her work on overcoming environmentalist opposition to housing and other projects needed and supported by minority communities.

On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by President Emeritus of Chapman University, Jim Doti, to discuss the state of the US economy and the recession.

Doti joined Chapman’s faculty in 1974 and founded the Center for Economic Research in 1978 (which became the Gary A. Anderson Center for Economic Research in 1997). He was appointed dean of the School of Business and Management – today’s George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics – in 1985 and served twice as Chapman’s acting president in 1988 and 1988-89. He co-authored two textbooks and co-edited a collection of readings that received the Templeton Award for Scholarly Excellence. While serving as president, Doti continued his academic research, focusing not only on econometric forecasting but also on demand and pricing for higher education. His articles have appeared in professional journals as well as the Wall Street Journal and Chronicle of Higher Education. He also has held the university’s Donald Bren Distinguished Chair in Business and Economics since 1999.

On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by Robert Casanova, director of industry and economic policy at the Semiconductor Industry Association, and Bill Amelio, CEO of DoubleCheck Solutions, to discuss America's need to reshore the semiconductor industry.

William (Bill) Amelio was the Chief Executive Officer of Avnet. He has more than 35 years of management and industry experience and has held senior positions at global publicly traded companies and has spent most of his career managing global technology enterprises. In July 2016, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Avnet.

Bill was the President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of CHC Group Ltd., a global helicopter services company, from 2010 to 2015. From 2005 to 2009, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Lenovo. Prior to his role at Lenovo, Bill was a Regional Senior Vice President and President, Asia-Pacific and Japan for Dell Inc. He began his career with the Microelectronics Technology Division of IBM in 1979 and later became the General Manager, Worldwide Operations of the Personal Computer Division. In 2019, Bill was elected to the S&P Global Board of Directors.

Bill previously served on the Board of Directors of National Semiconductor. He has a chemical engineering degree from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in management from Stanford University.

Bill and his wife, Jamie, founded and continue to lead Caring for Cambodia, a nonprofit organization that works to educate the children of Cambodia through building schools, training teachers and providing for basic human needs.

A longtime Southern California journalist, Stewart earned a Master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University. Stewart was formerly managing editor of L.A. Weekly. She’s also served as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Buzz and New Times Los Angeles, where she focused on urban affairs, education and the environment.

Michael Lind is a professor of practice at the LBJ School. A graduate of the Plan II Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Law School at The University of Texas with a master's degree in international relations from Yale, Lind has previously taught at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. He has been assistant to the director of the Center for the Study of Foreign Affairs at the U.S. State Department and has been an editor or staff writer for The New Yorker, Harper's, The New Republic and The National Interest. A co-founder of New America, along with Walter Mead, Sherle Schwenninger and Ted Halstead, Lind co-founded New America's American Strategy program, and served as policy director of its economic growth program. He is a former member of the boards of Fairvote and Economists for Peace and Security.

Lind has published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The International Economy and the Financial Times. He is the author of more than a dozen books of nonfiction, fiction, poetry and children's literature, including several that were New York Times Notable Books of the Year. His studies of U.S. history, economics and foreign policy include The Next American Nation (1995), The American Way of Strategy (2006), Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States (2012) and The New Class War: Saving Democracy from the Managerial Elite (2020).

On this episode of Feudal Future,  hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by Ross Elliot, Chairman of the Urban Land Institute of Australia, and Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, Professor of Psychiatry at UC Irvine. This show covered the psychological impact of Covid-19 and how governments are managing it.

Ross is the co-founder of Suburban Futures (formerly The Suburban Alliance). He has 30 years’ experience in the property and urban development industry, including a number of national leadership roles for the Property Council of Australia as its Executive Director, then Chief Operating Officer and later as National Executive Director for the Residential Development Council. In this time he pioneered a number of policy initiatives for the industry on urban growth and cities policies for Australia. He has both authored and edited a number of monographs on urban development policy, housing and cities policies for Australia.  Ross was also founding CEO of Brisbane Marketing, winning an International Downtown Association’s (USA) award for City Marketing in 2003.  A frequent speaker, author and commentator on urban development policy, he was in 2016 invited to be international keynote speaker for the American Planning Association’s Utah conference and in 2017 was published in a global joint MIT/Chapman University project “Infinite Suburbia.”

Aaron Kheriaty is Professor of Psychiatry at UCI School of Medicine and Director of the Medical Ethics Program at UCI Health. He serves as chairman of the medical ethics committees at UCI Hospital and at the CA Department of State Hospitals. Dr. Kheriaty graduated from the University of Notre Dame in philosophy and pre-medical sciences, earned his MD degree from Georgetown University, and completed residency training in psychiatry at UCI. He has authored books and articles for professional and lay audiences on bioethics, social science, psychiatry, and religion. His work has been published in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Public Discourse, and First Things; he has conducted print, radio, and television interviews on bioethics topics with The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, CNN, Fox, and NPR. On matters of public policy and healthcare he has addressed the California Medical Association and has testified before the California Senate Health Committee.

On this episode of Feudal Future,  hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by Ross Terrill, China specialist and Associate in Research at Harvard's Fairbank center for Chinese Studies. The panel takes a deep dive into the history of China and the future of the republic.

Ross Terrill, a China specialist and Associate in Research at Harvard's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, is the author of nine books. Raised in rural Australia, he graduated in history and political science from the University of Melbourne in 1962 and served in the Australian Army. He took a PH.D. in political science at Harvard in 1970, where his thesis on the philosophy of R. H. Tawney was awarded the Sumner Prize and was later published by Harvard University Press as Socialism As Fellowship.

While teaching at Harvard on political thought, Chinese politics, and international affairs, he wrote 800,000,000: The Real China, The Future of China: After Mao, Flowers on an Iron Tree: Five Cities of China, and the original edition of Mao. A decade a contributing editor of The Atlantic Monthly he won the National Magazine Award for Reporting Excellence and the George Polk Memorial Award for Outstanding Magazine Reporting for writings on China. In 1979 he became an American citizen.

He is a many-time contributor to the New York Times (Op-Ed, Book Review, Week in Review, Travel Section) and other newspapers, including Newsday, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, and Washington Post. He has written 19 articles in Atlantic Monthly, and many in Foreign Affairs, New Republic, National Geographic, World Monitor and other magazines. Over recent years his books include The White Boned Demon: A Biography of Madame Mao and The Australians.
