091: THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953)

091: THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953)
In 1898 H.G. Wells imagined a war between the people of Earth advanced invaders from Mars. Since then storytellers have re-envisioned this conflict for their own times. One of these was George Pal, whose 1953 movie became a generation's iconic depiction of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. How does that mid-century version hold up seventy years later?

Book Club - The Human Chronicles?

Book Club - The Human Chronicles?

Clare and Hannah had so much to say about the Martian Chronicles, we decided to record another episode about it. We talk almost exclusively about Hannah's favorite story in the book, and we manage to sneak a C.S. Lewis reference in there, too. This one gets pretty existential (which it usually does if you let Hannah talk for too long).

Intro and outro music (“Splanchnics Riff)” composed and performed by Clare T. Walker.

Ep 41: Aliens - Independence Day & War Of The Worlds

Ep 41: Aliens - Independence Day & War Of The Worlds
Aliens! In this episode we talk about 2 landmark stories that defined how extra terrestrial stories are presented. The original War of the Worlds is a trip back to the late 1800's and laid the template that Independence Day would follow almost 100 years later. Besides, everyone loves a good alien story! We also dive into our own fun theories about visitors from another planet and whether we think Earth has already been visited in the past. Lots of fun in this episode, come join us!

    Mars Attacks! (1996)

    Mars Attacks! (1996)

    "Martians, this is great!"

How many moments have gone down in history as momentous occasions? Whether it be a technological advancement, the octomom, or making contact with extra-terrestrial beings for the first time in human history, the latter of which would be especially significant.

But not if said extra-terrestrials from Mars and are little a-holes hell bent on wreaking havoc for no other reason than because why the hell not!

And that's exactly what goes down in Tim Burton's 1996 certifiably insane alien invasion flick, Mars Attacks!

With an A-list cast all in on the joke, wild destruction all around, and Tom Jones singing "It's Not Unusual" in front of homicidal Martian invaders! Check your brain at the door, fellow snarks, 'cuz this one's a ton of fun as we watch worlds collide in spectacularly hilarious fashion where no one is safe and 2 out 3 branches of working government ain't bad!!

"We Come In Peace! Don't Run! We Are Your Friends!"

H.G. Wells - Crypt of Creators (The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Time After Time)

H.G. Wells - Crypt of Creators (The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, Time After Time)

We debut the Crypt of Creators, by snatching Herbert George right out of his time travelling adventures! We begin by discussing adaptations of two of his most famous works. First up, the Martian invasion is a go! Orson Welles causes a stir and PERHAPS mass hysteria, in his radio adaptation of one of H.G.'s most celebrated pieces of science fiction, when a cylindrical ship crashes in Grovers Mill, New Jersey in 1938. Then, those same troublesome invaders crash-land in small-town California (and all over the world) in the special effects spectacular, The War of the Worlds (1953). Wells himself, then creates his own device to explore the distant future of the year 802,701, in the George Pal produced and directed, The Time Machine (1960). And then from there, we take a little trip with Mr. Wells, as he uses keen detective skills to track down Jack the Ripper, who has used the time machine to escape into modern day 1979, in Time After Time (1979)!
