HILF 01: Frankenstein with Helen Shephard

HILF 01: Frankenstein with Helen Shephard

Mary Shelley began writing her novel, Frankenstein, in 1816 when she was only 17 years old. Today it remains one of the most-assigned books of all time, finding it's way into classes ranging from Law to Scientific Ethics to Fashion to Politics.  Readers and historians have argued for centuries which is more intriguing - the book or it's author - and Dawn is here to tell you... Yes.

Guest, Helen Shephard, is a British TV Host, model and comedian, who has no recollection of ever reading the book - and only cursory memory of the early film versions. However, as the recording took place right around Halloween, 2021 - she was intrigued by this ubiquitous monster and wanted to know the sexy story about his real origin.

PART 1 - The Book, as written in 1818 (and republished in 1831)

    00:00:00 - Greetings and introductions.

00:05:45 - Helen's never read Frankenstein (she doesn't think). Dawn lays out her extensive research of the book and author.

00:12:00 - Dawn's quick and dirty summary of the original Frankenstein. [Great cliff notes, kids! 23 minutes to a B+.]

PART 2 - The Author, Mary Shelley  - Where did this idea come from?

00:39:37 - Welcome back, any questions?

00:43:33 - Theory #1 - Frankenstein is about bad parents.

00:53:02 - Theory #2 - Frankenstein is about Death, and wanting to defy it.

O0:57:20 - Theory #3 - Frankenstein is a warning to not Play God. First Science Fiction.

01:04:50 - So what is it, Mary Shelley? Where the HELL did you get this idea?

01:08:00 - The 'Summer of Love' - 1816 on Lake Geneva with Lord Byron.

Ep. 96: Grave Mistake: TYPE O NEGATIVE Shoulda Been Huge!!!

Welcome brothers & sisters in blood, to another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This time we focus on one of our favorite bands of all time; the amazingly creepy-cool champions of Vinland: TYPE O NEGATIVE!. Join us in our Halloween-themed celebration of this band’s 7 killer albums and the big man that led this group: Peter Steele. If you don’t know this band, or if you are only vaguely familiar with them; do yourself a favor and check this out. Put on some black, turn on the creepy green light, pour yourself a cup of absinthe, and crank up the volume!

Ep. 95: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol.II

Ep. 95: Everything Turns Grey - Goth Rock vol.II

This is the first week of our annual Halloween month of creepy shows! The boys provide a true appreciation of the grim and ghastly as they don all black garb, guy-liner, and a healthy dose of black no. 1 on their mop tops. That’s right, everything turns grey as they, once again, explore the dark and ethereal world of Goth Rock…

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

    Songs this week include:

    1. The 69 Eyes – “Gothic Girl” from Blessed Be (2000)
    2. Rosegarden Funeral Party – “Fear Of Feeling Nothing” from At The Stake - EP (2020)

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ with ‘A Nightmare Wakes’ Director Nora Unkel

‘Bride of Frankenstein’ with ‘A Nightmare Wakes’ Director Nora Unkel

This episode begins with a very important announcement from our host April Wolfe about the future of Switchblade Sisters. But as far as guests go, this week we are joined by the phenomenal writer and director Nora Unkel. Her latest feature, A Nightmare Wakes, explores the personal turmoil of writer Mary Shelley. This is so appropriate because the movie she chose to discuss this week is James Whale’s classic, Bride of Frankenstein. Nora begins the conversation by elaborating on how Whale’s movie directly inspired her latest film. She also talks about having to ignore what is currently popular in modern cinema in order to pursue the projects she’s most excited about. And lastly, she and April dissect the gay undertones of the film, from director James Whale’s influence to the “archetypical Queen” Dr. Pretorius.

Making of a Monster; Dissecting Frankenstein

Making of a Monster; Dissecting Frankenstein

Ever wonder where Mary Shelley got the inspiration to write the very first sci-fi masterpiece?  This is the tale of not only Mary Shelley's life, but the inspiration leading up to the book and the inspiration her character Victor Frankenstein was influenced by.

You don't need to have read the book to follow along with this one, but if you do want to read it first, there is a free copy on Amazon for kindle.  It takes about three hours to read and is well worth it because it is good!  I recommend the 1831 revision. also, there is always the library.

Hope you enjoy!  If you do, please subscribe!  If you have anything to add to the discussion you can find a post on Instagram under Dissecting Medical History.   I'd love to hear your thoughts about the topic.

Ep. 50 Chilling, Thrilling Sounds Of Rock n' Punk n' Metal

What is it we do here at InObscuria? In the beginning, good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins... But in time the nations grew weak, and our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong. In the dust of hell, lurked the blackest of hates; for he whom, they feared awaited them... Now many many lifetimes later lay destroyed beaten down and only the corpses of rebels, ashes of dreams, and bloodstained streets remain... It has been written, "Those who have the youth, have the future". So, come now children of the beast; be strong and shout at the devil!

    May You Know Monsters

    May You Know Monsters

Monsters are so important to know, to create and to attempt to understand. In this episode I share a little about monsters in art and a lot about my favorite monster...The Monster that Mary Shelley created in Frankenstein. We discuss how he is the patron monster for artists and how Frankenstein is a cautionary tale for creatives. Discover curated content at THIS LINK, including images of the art I discussed, links to information about the topics discussed, how to join Starling groups and the Spotify playlist around "The Monster."

This is probably my last episode for 2020....as I have a lot to consider and cultivate in my own creative process.

Monster Ex Machina 1: Young Frankenstein - Julian Stockinger
Schlussroller -> Top 3 Filmparodien
