In this special Christmas episode, Dominic shares a message from the gospel of John. What’s unique about this gospel is that, unlike the other gospels, John doesn’t give us the facts about Christmas. For example, there is no mention of the manger, the star or the wise men. Instead, he digs past the details and shares what Christmas means — not only theologically, but for our lives personally.

Augustine, the early church theologian once wrote: “Man’s maker was made man that He, Ruler of the stars, might nurse at His mother’s breast; that the Bread might hunger, the Fountain thirst, the Light sleep, the Way be tired on its journey; that Truth might be accused of false witnesses, the Teacher be beaten with whips, the Foundation be suspended on wood; that Strength might grow weak; that the Healer might be wounded; that Life might die.” The meaning of Christmas is unearthed when the truth and beauty of Jesus incarnation is considered. Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

If you’re like me, there are two ways that I lose sight of what it is that we just celebrated on Christmas day. First, I’ve allowed the familiarity of Christmas to diminish the meaning. I grew up in a Christian home where Christmas was centered on the birth of Christ. Even though I value that heritage, I realize that the bible readings and Christmas hymns have become so familiar that I’m tempted to listen and sing without actually focusing on the wonder of the incarnation. Second, I’ve allowed the busyness, the rush, and all the cultural Christmas fluff to crowd out the silence that’s needed to really focus on the coming of Jesus Christ into the world to undo all that’s been wrecked by sin. In his Advent devotional, Paul Tripp writes these helpful words: This season, in the midst of all the celebrations and gift-giving, be careful to remember that at the center of what we celebrate is one game-changing, life-altering, hope-giving reality: grace is a person, and his name is Jesus.

We started off this year with the theme House of Miracles and we loved getting the chance to celebrate all He’s done in your life this year. Join us for House of Miracles - A Look back at 2021, where you will get a chance to hear some incredible stories of people from our church family.

Christmas is the story of God’s miraculous arrival and intervention in our lives. It’s a reminder of God’s miracles; the big miracle of His arrival and the millions of little miracles of His daily concern. Although we sometimes fail to realize His wondrous and amazing grace in the moment … God still does miracles!

The story of Christmas is a tale of an overwhelming joy, revealed to the world through the wonders of His love. And, that miraculous story is still being written! God wants to show-up in your life today and use this Christmas to remind you of the big miracle of his arrival, but also, the millions of little miracles that come our way. The miracle of Christmas is God’s invitation for you to receive the gift of His arrival and the grace that will carry you in every season of life. Join us this December for The Miracle of Christmas.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Countless movies have explored this question. Countless sermons have been preached on this question. Countless Bible Studies have been conducted on this question, but what does Christmas mean to YOU?

In The Gift of Christmas, our Host, Ms. Yilda Rivera and her Co-Host, Todd Uebele, discuss what Christmas means to them. They also talk about the greatest gift of all, God's gift to all mankind.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) 

One way to see this verse is as a definition of the gospel. It starts with God’s motivation and continues with God giving us a gift.  

This verse is an illustration of how much God loves us. He gave us a gift…His one and only Son...Jesus.

The word “paradox” describes a statement or event that at times may seem self-contradictory, that defies expectations or that is beyond comprehension. We encounter paradoxes all the time in our lives; however, the greatest paradox in our world is not a statement or event but a person: Jesus. Today we will look at the extraordinary birth of Jesus and how each encounter in the Birth Narrative was full of irony and incomprehensible moments and how Jesus defied expectations then and is still doing so even today. 

NOTE: We had a number of signal issues with our microphone during the sermon today - more than normal. We tried to clean it up the best we could and apologize for how spotty it sounds in places.
