Dr. Woodruff shares his story and how he defines a GOOD MEDICAL SALES REP!  

Dr. Woodruff was born in Arkansas.  He completed his residency at both Louisiana State University and Oschner Medical Center.  From there, he completed a robotic and minimally invasive urologic oncology fellowship at The Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.  Upon finishing his fellowship, Dr. Woodruff moved to Northwest Arkansas where he practiced until 2012 serving as the Director of Robotic Surgery at Northwest Medical Center.  Shortly after that, he moved to the desert with his family and now has his own practice called Woodruff Urology in Mesa, Arizona.

In this episode we have the privilege of talking to Candy Tsang who now works at Hologic. She initially broke into medical sales when she was working at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  She networked with reps while there, stayed persistent and was given an opportunity. She initially broke in at stryker, moved from there to integra, and now she is at Hologic selling capital and disposables in the breast cancer space.  She sought out a job at Hologic because She has always been passionate about women’s health.   She talks about her own experience with networking and being persistent to break into the Medical Sales Industry!

Went from the Army to Med Device Sales.  Before breaking into Med device, Brian enlisted in the army in 2003 and worked his way up the ranks commissioned as an Officer in 2007.  He served multiple assignments in the US and in the Middle East.  During this time, he developed his leaderships skills, while leading multiple, dynamic - cross functional teams. In 2015, Brian decided to take his career in another direction and that is when he broke into Medical Sales.  Brian was first hired as a territory manager by AMS, which was later acquired by Boston Scientific.  During his first three years, he received the Men's Health Sales Achievement Award back to back in 2016 & 2017.  Finishing in the top 15% of the National Sales force and number one in his region.  Brian is now the Regional Manager at Boston Scientific and still serves part time in the army reserves & was just recently promoted to Major.  The intent of this episode is to show that breaking into Medical Sales from the Military IS possible & hopefully we can leave those, who are entering the unknown job market, with renewed hope!

Ryan, the Vice President of Atlas Healthcare Partners, began his career working in the healthcare field as a Medical Assistant for a Sports Medicine Practice.  During that time, he used his networking skills to break into the medical sales industry.  He eventually landed a job at Medtronic and was there for 9 plus years working his way up from an associate clinical specialist to a territory manager.  He then transitioned to Atlas Healthcare Partners and now Ryan, along with his team, are helping to drive growth in Surgery Centers across multiple geographies.  Ryan provides a unique perspective going from the healthcare side into medical sales.  His upward progression to the Vice President Role at Atlas Healthcare is also inspirational, so I wanted to bring him on to share his story!

Sarah started out her Sales Career as an associate sales representative for British Petroleum.  At British Petroleum she supported 7 territory managers, assisting the district to finishing 105% to plan in 2017, all while being asked to back-fill the positions of two territory managers within the district. After stepping up to the plate and over-performing, she was promoted to a territory manager. While in that position she also managed 5 distributor reps and finished at 138% to plan and was ranked #2 in the country for territory growth. She was hired by Boston Scientific in 2019 as an Associate Sales Representative and was quickly promoted to a Territory Manager 7 months later.  It is very common for candidates to be told that they either do not qualify for the job because of their lack of sales experience.  We will be getting Sarah's perspectives about all of this – from someone that has already had success in two very different sales industries.

Board certified, fellowship trained, orthopedic surgeon.  He has a dual fellowship from the Cleveland Clinic in both primary and revision hip and knee replacements, as well as shoulder arthroscopy and replacements.  In addition, he has extensive training and hands on experience in working in a level-one trauma facility.  We will find out if physicians are more likely to use the rep/company that they used in their fellowship program and during the fellowship program, was the rep valuable?  We will also find out Dr. Ahmed's definition of a good rep and more! Regional Manager for Boston Scientific.  Boston Scientific is one of the biggest medical device companies in the world.  Being a Regional Manager, Ed covers New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and California. He has won Regional Manager and Region of the Year three times. Before he was a regional manager, Ed was a rep winning President’s Club twice and rep of the year once. For this episode, I have handed the mic over to Sarah Stengel, who will be interviewing Ed Cunha.  Mr. Cunha hired Sarah for a position at Boston Scientific in 2017.  During that time, she had no sales experience and went up against candidates with much more experience then her, but she prevailed.  Ed also breaks down how his team is adapting to the corona virus and talks about his journey into Medical Sales.

The district manager for a med device company.   David just recently won presidents club in 2019 as a District Manager. Dave has won presidents club 8 different times throughout his career.  Five of those were when he was working in a managerial role.  Winning presidents club as a rep is one thing, but winning it as a district manager is a whole different dynamic.  A lot more coaching, teamwork, and strategy goes into play. Great advice from a someone who has been around the industry for a long time!
