Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong with MC McDonald

Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong with MC McDonald

I reached out to MC McDonald after reading her book Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong (And Other Things you Need to Know to Take Back Your Life) which I found pivotal in unravelling my own trauma response over these past few months.

MaryCatherine McDonald, PhD, is a research professor and life coach who specializes in the psychology and philosophy of trauma. She has been researching, lecturing, and publishing on the neuroscience, psychology, and lived experience of trauma since completing her PhD in 2016. She’s published two academic books and many research papers, and is the creator of a trauma-based curriculum that serves previously incarcerated folks and veterans.

In this chat, we cover, what does it really mean to experience trauma, and how does it affect our body, brain, and identity?

     - MC's (re)definition of trauma as an 'unbearable emotional experience that lacks a relational home', challenging the current definition that often overlooks layers of lived experience.

     - Our journey through the intricate neurobiology of trauma reveals its profound effects on us - from disrupting memory to altering our reactions.

     - recognizing our body's warning signals and the importance of having diverse tools to manage trauma responses.

     - simple tools like diaphragmatic breathing which can help regulate our nervous system during a trigger, and

     - how narrative reframing can powerfully aid our healing journey.

    - the deep-seated issue of shame, often linked with trauma, and debunk the misconception that feeling ashamed is necessary for progress.

And finally, we explore how critical life transitions can bring opportunities for healing and stress the importance of trusting ourselves during these challenging times.

Join us in this episode as we learn to find our voice, reframe our stories, and navigate the path towards healing from trauma.

Don't Know The Right Questions? All The Facts About Hormone Replacement Therapy And Living Healthier In Menopause With Dr. Kelly Casperson

Don't Know The Right Questions? All The Facts About Hormone Replacement Therapy And Living Healthier In Menopause With Dr. Kelly Casperson

A big welcome back to the podcast to Dr. Kelly Casperson. Kelly is a urologist with advanced training in pelvic medicine and surgery, but most important for us, she is working hard to normalize how we talk about and approach sex, because let’s face it, a lot of us were left in the dark on the subject as we grew up.

She has authored a book with the same title as her podcast "You Are Not Broken" to bring awareness to some real basic and fundamental facts that we may not know about sex itself, sexual desire, menopause and hormone replacement therapy, and life around our sex lives in general. She calls it her advocacy work.

A few takeaways from today's conversation:

Two things all women 50+ should know about their bodies that they may not know:

    1. The clitoris is where your orgasm comes from. Not the Penis in Vagina or PIV. The clitoris is the target.

    2. Everything in your life affects your sex life. Your sex life is not in a bubble. The way you live your life affects your sex life. If you are sleeping poorly, if your health is bad, if your thoughts are negative, If your relationship isn’t doing well, if you think the dishes in the sink getting done is more important than sex – all these things will affect your sex life.

    Other Takeaways:

    3. It’s important to ask yourself – who do you want to be when you are 74? You need to prioritize sleep and exercise and eating right because if you want to keep feeling great long into the future you’ve got to do the things that 74 year old will be grateful for the 50 year old put into thought and into action.

     4. A woman’s desire doesn’t necessarily come before sex. It may come before, it may come during and it may not happen until after. Wow that was great. I forgot how great it is, can you remind me how great that is?

     5. Menopause is normal if you are blessed enough to live that long – it’s going to happen. And it’s important to communicate with your partner about what you learn about menopause and explain what you are going through. Otherwise they are just guessing themselves. And that never goes well.

Make sure to listen to Kelly on her podcast "You Are Not Broken" and find her book at Amazon: https://a.co/d/1kGQvGC
It is also available on Audible.

The Menopause Revolution And Sparking Menopositivity with Womaness Co-Founder And CEO Sally Mueller

As brand builder Sally Mueller entered perimenopause and all of the symptoms that go with it, she found that the products available on the market were all things she definitely would not be putting in her body. So she and her partner in business, Michelle Jacobs, created and started the Womaness brand. Womaness is a high-performance collection of modern menopause products created by women for women that offer symptom solutions from head to toe.  Not only have they worked to create innovative products, but are working hard to build community as they educate and inform as many as possible as a push to Modernize Menopause, something that is long, long overdue.

Menopause & Sex Hormone Testing With Nancy McElwain

Menopause & Sex Hormone Testing With Nancy McElwain

Nancy McElwain is on the podcast today to educate us on menopause and the importance of sex hormone testing.

So often we are left to "figure it out" ourselves, but much like when we learn about the birds and bees, we need to have someone sit down with us to explain this menopause thing so that we don't think we're crazy or that we need to take some sort of pill to mask the symptoms of what we are going through.

    Some takeaways:

    • Much like when we are young and learning about the birds and the bees, women deserve more information about peri-menopause and menopause as they approach it.
    •  Symptoms that you may be entering peri-menopause are sleep disturbances, mood swings, sweats, some weigh gain, loss of muscle mass, mental fog, and vaginal dryness.
    • Hormones are the sense through which we see the world. Hormones work together in symmetry and balance so when balance is off, things go haywire.
    • When we talk about SEX HORMONES we are talking about estrogen, testosterone and progesterone.
    • The first thing that happens in menopause is the ovaries start to slow down in their production of sex hormones and the adrenal glands have to take up the slack.
    • What can make peri-menopause so difficult is that your adrenals are used to deal with stress and are already taxed so when they are asked to make more sex hormone in addition, they aren’t prepared.
    • The ease of your trip through peri-menopause and menopause is a direct correlation to the health of your adrenals as you head into it.
    • Your level of cortisol, or stress hormone, is tested to determine the health of your adrenals. If the health of the adrenals helps us through menopause, we need to get our level of stress under control .
    • The body feels stress from all sources: dietary, lifestyle, mental, emotional, physical, biochemical. So by the time women hit menopause, there is already lot of stress happening.
    • The first thing to do when holistically dealing with stress is to sit down with a piece of paper and write all of the tangible things that cause you stress.
    • Nancy puts stress into three categories - ones you can get rid of, ones that you can make better, ones that you are must deal with.
    • Heightened Cortisol levels puts us into Fight or Flight mode (ie running from a bear) and slows down the production of our sex hormones as well as slow systems like digestion - because if you are running for your life those become lower priority. Except that we aren’t in flight or flight anymore - we don’t run from bears - we are in what is called sit and stew.
    • The sex hormone test that Nancy does is called the Dutch test - it is a dried urine test. She suggests the COMPLETE which tests both Cortisol and the sex hormo
