Wild Courage: Vulnerability and Victory in the Quest for Authentic Manhood

Wild Courage: Vulnerability and Victory in the Quest for Authentic Manhood

As the golden rays of New Jersey's long-awaited sun seep into our studio, we're joined by the inspiring Bryan Byrd, who brings tales of camaraderie from the fires of Wild Courage. Brian's vision of a sanctuary for men to connect through the raw honesty of their shared stories has lit a beacon for many seeking solace from the solitude of recent times. Our conversation meanders through the birth of this ministry, its ethos, and the life-altering moments that occur when men from all walks of life gather to offer support, listen, and grow together. It's these encounters, rich with vulnerability, that underscore the innate power of a community built on the courage to share.

The symphony of voices at our table echoes with the harmony of men finding their equilibrium within the group dynamic. Sarge, Mark, and Bryan weave narratives of how a delicate balance is struck in guiding the conversations of our groups. From the tales of individuals who learn to modulate their need to "show up and throw up," to celebrating the silenced ones who finally find their voice, our episode is a testament to the transformative strength of brotherhood. We delve into the art of patience, the breakthroughs that bond, and the simple yet potent act of being present for one another—without the need for fixing or unsolicited counsel.

As we draw the curtains on this episode, we leave you with a mosaic of stories that speak to the heart of healing through shared experiences. Each anecdote, laden with the wisdom of hindsight, paints a vivid picture of the journey from trauma to redemption. Our shared laughter, moments of silence, and the occasional crackling from the fire pit serve as a backdrop to the rich dialogue about the importance of authenticity, the pitfalls of prioritizing achievement over relationships, and the communal pilgrimage towards a simplified life. We extend an invitation to you, our dear listeners, to join us in this movement of earnest reflection, connection, and spiritual discovery, right here on Foxhole Symphony.

How To Navigate The Emotional Chaos Of Cancer | David Richman | Ep #086

How To Navigate The Emotional Chaos Of Cancer | David Richman | Ep #086

Over the last 10 years, David has completed over 50 triathlons, including 15 Ironman-distance triathlons (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run), more than 50 runs longer than marathon distance, including several 24-hour runs, running 85 miles in Mexico in the heat of the summer, running 104 miles straight from Santa Barbara to Manhattan Beach, and most recently biking 4,700-miles in just six weeks as he met with the participants of his upcoming book exploring the emotional side of cancer.

David made his way across and up the United States, covering 4,700 miles, and visited the participants of my book, which chronicles the lives of 15 people who were affected by cancer, either as patients, doctors, researchers, caregivers, or otherwise.

These poignant, significant, meaningful, helpful stories cover many aspects of cancer: caregiving and research, emotional and intellectual journeys, various stages of life, and more, so that combined, these memoirs will give us a complete view of the human experience as it relates to cancer.

David joins Brandon Clift and ManKind Podcast Producer and Editor Michael Russer, who is actively battling cancer, to discuss the profound lessons and topics covered in Cycle Of Lives.

    Key takeaways from this episode:

    • A reframe for how to look at the cancer journey (Michael's Story),
    • The importance of moving through the emotional chaos of illness instead of numbing and avoiding feelings.
    • Common misunderstandings about what great support looks like for those experiencing the impacts of cancer/illness.

How to Start a Men's Group

How to Start a Men's Group

In this episode we’ll explore how to start, structure and maintain a successful men’s group (even if you’ve never been in one before). I’ve personally been in men’s groups for over 10 years, and they’ve improved literally every area of my life.

In addition to learning how to start a group of your own, you'll also hear personal stories from my experiences in men's groups, and you'll hear from a good friend of mine named Nathan who’s actually in my personal men’s group too. Nathan just started a second men's group, and his story is helpful and inspiring because it shows just how easy it can be to start one.

This episode is a recording of the “How to Start a Men’s Group” workshop I led a month ago over Zoom. The recording turned out so well I decided to turn it into a full podcast episode. There's a lot in this episode, so if you're someone who likes to see things written out in nicely structured ways, check out the guide I created below:

Matt Zerker: Why struggling doesn't make you less of a man

Matt Zerker: Why struggling doesn't make you less of a man

In this episode I'm joined by Matt Zerker, the Founder & CEO of tethr, a peer enabled mental health and well-being platform for men. Matt has an incredible story and passion for what he's building which is what we'll dig into today.

Prior to tethr, Matt worked as a Portfolio Manager at a quantitative hedge fund and even achieved the coveted CFA designation. Despite the early career success, Matt was deeply unhappy. After the sudden death of one of his closest friends in 2018 sent him spiraling into a suicidal depression Matt began the journey towards a more fulfilling life. After trying everything from therapy to medication, and even some experimental treatments, Matt discovered a men's peer support group in his hometown of Toronto and that's when his inner world began to shift. After attending a fateful men's retreat in April 2019, Matt returned home on a Monday and quit his job suddenly on Wednesday - he has been building tethr ever since.

In this episode you'll hear more about:

    • How tethr got started and how they're doing
    • Matt's personal journey since starting tethr
    • The pressure of being a mental health founder trying to solve your own problems and experience
    • Redefining out relationship with our work and being of service

    • Techniques Matt uses to reconnect with himself
    • Connecting with our inner child in times of stress
