Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. It meant something different.

J.P. Morgan e la biga trafugata

Mark Gould, Bonus Room: Trumpeter and Conductor

A section of Mark’s book, Gould on Music deals with music in a post pandemic world. Most of our time in the Bonus Room is spent on this subject, but we also talk about what it is like to teach as a player and also as a non/former player.

Mark Gould, Part 2: Trumpeter and Conductor

In Part 2, Mark and I discuss differing views of interpretation, specifically with the Hindemith Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. The question is always this: How faithful should the performer be to the exact text of the music? Mark, of course, has some very definite ideas! We also talk about his time with the Metropolitan Opera, and end this part of our conversation with a discussion of historical performance practice.

Mark Gould, Part 1: Trumpeter and Conductor

Mark Gould, Part 1: Trumpeter and Conductor

Mark Gould is one of the most interesting, controversial, and hilarious musicians on the classical (and jazz) musical scene today. His new book, Gould on Music, is a fascinating look into many aspects of music, especially teaching. So it was interesting to hear Mark’s thoughts on so many different aspects of music and the music business.

In Part 1 of our conversation, I ask Mark about a number of his ideas about teaching, how he approaches each individual student differently, and how using humor can be a help in teaching, including ways to make concepts memorable. I ask him how he would teach me as a young student, he talks about the sound and approach of Adolph Herseth, and we end with a few funny stories of his time with the Metropolitan Opera.

    How We Got Together

    How We Got Together

In today's episode, hosts Alan and Susan answer a listener's question, who wants to know how they got together? The irony of the recording is it falls directly on their wedding anniversary. The story starts with both of them having forgotten it was their anniversary. Again! This is not the first first time Alan and Susan have let the date slip. To understand how that happens, they begin by setting the clock back many years.

Both hosts reflect back on some early warning signs they missed in their first marriages. Alan comments he played the game of ignore the problem and maybe it will go away. Tracking some parallels, both Alan and Susan recall their divorces and the days, weeks and months following. Neither ever planned to get married again. But, an event occurred that Alan remembers as being the first time he realized he wanted to take care of Susan. Even after, it was the kids who first proposed a family merger. The thought became reality.

Due to a clause in Alan's divorce agreement, a quick marriage by the Justice of the Peace had to happen. So, even though neither thought they would get married ever again, here they were, back in the bonds of matrimony!

The episode then dives into Susan flying up to drive with her dad down to Georgia for a visit. Part of the visit will also mean Alan taking a few days off to go to an extended family gathering in Florida. As he says, everyone needs to take some time off even if you love what you do.

In closing, Susan discusses the concept of using it or losing it and how important flexibility is toward physical health. She has been working with her dad to get him back in better shape. And, with all of the crazy scheduling, Alan and Susan didn't make time to record videos on some basic stretches. However, they vowed to make it happen this week.
