"Quiet Healing to Recovery Advocate" w/ Hilary Phelps

"Quiet Healing to Recovery Advocate" w/ Hilary Phelps

Robbie and Patrick sit down with Hilary Phelps, recovery advocate, former swimmer, and older sister of Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps. Hilary discusses her relationship with alcohol and drugs throughout adolescence and early adulthood and shares the experiences that led to her decision to get sober and build a life, and subsequent career, filled with connection and purpose.

From her early years, Hilary shone brightly as a beacon of promise, excelling with top grades and outpacing her peers as the nation's fastest swimmer in the country for her age group. Yet, at just 14, her life took a dramatic turn with her first sip of alcohol, marking the beginning of a 15-year struggle with addiction—a time filled with profound emptiness, confusion, and a sense of being lost.

At 29, Hilary courageously took a significant step towards healing by checking into rehab for substance use disorder. Her journey into sobriety entailed much more than simply giving up alcohol; it was about fundamentally changing her life, distancing herself from negative influences, and confronting the underlying issues that led her to addiction.

After 15 years of keeping her story of sobriety and recovery to herself (a quiet, personal victory), she realized the power and importance of sharing her story. She began to publicly share her story which led to more opportunities to speak out. Through these experiences, Hilary discovered a deeper purpose: to offer hope and encouragement to others who are healing quietly, helping them to persevere by openly sharing her own journey of recovery and healing.

Today, as a speaker, an addiction recovery advocate, writer, and holistic wellness coach, Hilary is dedicated to helping other women find their voices and heal from the challenges holding them back.

EP26: Thriving with ADHD: The Michael Phelps Story

EP26: Thriving with ADHD: The Michael Phelps Story

How can a child thrive with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

No doubt about it, it takes a village determined to support the child. Successful ADHD families report being supported by teachers, coaches, and extended family members.

It takes most of all the determination, unwavering patience of parents determined to see their child thrive no matter what, determined to see strengths where others see weaknesses.

Debbie Phelps, a middle-school principal in Towson, Maryland, and mother of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, gave multiple interviews about him. Here is what I learned about Debbie.

The Weight Of Gold Is Expensive

The Weight Of Gold Is Expensive
I watched a great documentary last night "The Weight of Gold" about Olympic Athletes and for those that know me, you know how much I love the Olympics! But the subject of this documentary wasn't to celebrate their accomplishments or highlight how incredibly athletic they are. No, this documentary was focusing on a subject that is pretty crucial to all of us right now: Mental Health.

All the athletes featured in the documentary share of the years and years of work they dedicated to succeed at the highest possible level of their sport but when the village closes and the glory has faded, they're left with very little real-life experience and how empty life is. As a fan of the Olympics, I typically stand in awe of these athletes and just expect that they have their lives together when in reality, they're fighting the same fight a lot of us are on a daily basis.

I was reminded that those friends of ours that look like they've got it all together need the support of friends just like you and more importantly, they need the reminder of the hope of Christ. The hope that we have in Christ is the steady confidence that every single promise God has made to us, he will fulfill.
