Incorporating Breathwork with Dr. Sachin Patel

Incorporating Breathwork with Dr. Sachin Patel

“Breathing is the most important thing we do that nobody taught us or trained us to do.” - Dr. Sachin Patel

Breathing plays a vital role in so many areas and aspects of our lives. More than just delivering oxygen to our mitochondria, correct breathing promotes healthy circulation, lymphatic flow, a healthy nervous system, and so much more.

Despite the profound effect that breathing has on our physiology, most of us pay little to no attention to it. The most profound shifts occur based on how we breathe for 99% of the day, so the most challenging work we need to do is raise our consciousness and constantly bring awareness to our breath.

Today, I’m joined by functional medicine practitioner Dr. Sachin Patel to talk about breathwork and its many benefits for your overall health. Dr. Sachin is convinced that “the doctor of the future is the patient” and has committed to helping others raise their consciousness, activate their inner doctor, and initiate their deepest healing through lifestyle and breathwork. Sachin founded The Living Proof Institute, pioneering a revolutionary approach to patient-centered healthcare.

In this conversation, Dr. Sachin and I discuss how we can start to develop our breath consciousness, the adverse effects of mouth breathing, how to use mouth tape to ensure nasal breathing, the impact of breathwork on energy levels, resources for improving your breathing, and more. Enjoy the episode!

Breathing New Life Into Patient Care and Provider Wellness - Dr. Michelle Thompson, Medical Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

Breathing New Life Into Patient Care and Provider Wellness - Dr. Michelle Thompson, Medical Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

If you get nothing else from listening to this memorable episode of Raise the Line, you’ll at least have the chance to do a breathing exercise in real time along with host Shiv Gaglani and his guest, Dr. Michelle Thompson, who is triple board certified in lifestyle, integrative, and osteopathic family medicine. Dr. Thompson has come to rely on a breathing practice for her own daily wellbeing and offers to do it along with all of her patients as well as countless medical students, residents and colleagues. In fact, as a strong advocate for provider wellness, she's created full-day programs for physicians and nurses to learn tools like breathwork for resilience and self-care. “Self-care is not selfish. If we are caring for ourselves, we are more available to others,” she explains. In addition to her role as medical director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Thompson is a national force in establishing lifestyle medicine programs in health systems across the country, as nearly 100 organizations have done.  Taking it a step further, UPMC is building a new hospital in the city that Thompson says is going to have a “lifestyle village” on the first three floors to facilitate the efforts of community members to choose healthy habits. Join us as we explore the impact lifestyle and mind-body medicine is having on patient care, employee wellness and medical education in Pittsburgh and far beyond in this perspective-shifting conversation.

Beyond Nutrition: Unraveling Your Food Story with Ian Rubin

Beyond Nutrition: Unraveling Your Food Story with Ian Rubin

In this insightful episode of The Modern Vital Podcast, Dr. Ben Reebs delves deep into the nuanced relationship between humans and food with guest expert, Ian Rubin. Ian, a wellness coach and founder of Food Story Coaching, introduces the concept of "food story", emphasizing how our relationship with food is driven by both internal and external influences.

This dynamic relationship isn't solely about nutritional values but deeply rooted in our cultural, emotional, and psychosocial interactions with food. Ian highlights that often, individuals act on their food choices unconsciously, driven by the needs of their story rather than rational thought. While many people can access information about nutritious diets and health advice, the disconnect arises when there is a lack of understanding or confrontation of one's personal food story.

Dr. Reebs and Ian discuss the challenges faced by patients who get overwhelmed by strict diets and the need for practitioners to recognize the importance of addressing the emotional and cultural ties patients have to food.

If you're looking to dive deeper into understanding the intricacies of chronic disease and its impact on your overall well-being, consider checking out Dr. Reebs' book, "The Serpent & The Butterfly: The Seven Laws of Healing." In this book, he discusses thyroid health and much more to help you on your journey to optimal wellness. Click here to purchase your copy: https://www.drreebs.com/serpent-butterfly-book/

310: Unleashing the Power of Mind-Body Medicine: How We Can Build Resilience | Dr. April Hirschberg

    Episode Description

Stress is a natural part of life, but too much of it can lead to distress and discomfort. In this episode of the Healthy Lifestyle Solutions podcast, we talked with Dr. April Hirschberg, a board-certified psychiatrist and lifestyle medicine expert, about the benefits of mind-body medicine, the importance of stress management and building resilience, and simple ways to improve your overall health. In summary, this episode offers a variety of tools and strategies for dealing with and controlling stress.

    • The significance of self-care and developing the self-care component of the three-legged stool that represents modern medicine.
    • Misconceptions about stress and resilience are addressed, focusing on the fact that resiliency is the ability to adapt and bounce back, not just the ability to handle stress.
    • The advantages of using white noise apps, walking in nature, and guided meditations as methods for relaxation.
    • Positive psychology and how it focuses on getting us to use the parts of our brain that help us see the good things in life.
