We welcome noted author and journalist Gene Santoro for an extensive conversation about his long association with music both as a writer and performer. Gene is one of the lucky ones who roamed NYC's music haunts in the 1960s and was able to see and hear first hand John Coltrane, The Blues Project, Dave Van Ronk, The Mothers of Invention, Tiny Tim and many others. Starting to write about music with Guitar World Magazine his articles have appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Down Beat, Rolling Stone, The Nation and other periodicals. He is the author of "Myself When I am Real" the definitive biography of Jazz Legend Charles Mingus and 2 collections of his music related articles "Dancing in Your Head" and "Highway 61 Revisited" for the Oxford University Press. The musicians he has interviewed are simply too numerous to mention. He doesn't hold back in this podcast. It's difficult to say what is more interesting, the people he has interviewed or his observations and opinions on American music and culture of the last 50 + years.

MARK WADE is an accomplished musician whose excellence has garnered recognitions on several jazz publications including being featured as one of DownBeat Magazine's top 10 bass players. Jazz trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt knew what he wanted to do from the first moment he heard the sound of Freddie Hubbard playing on the “Ugetsu” album by Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, when he was just a boy. Here he talks about growing up in a jazz house, his early musical mentors, and his general philosophy about professionalism in music. 

I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it a few more times: Tatum is one sharp dressed cat. 

 

O Festival Internacional SeixalJazz chega à 14.ª edição. De 23 a 26 de outubro, vão passar pelo Auditório Municipal o projeto Snakeoil, do saxofonista americano Tim Berne, os portugueses The Mingus Project, liderados pelo contrabaixista Nelson Cascais, o pianista alemão Joachim Kühn e a fechar esta edição o quarteto do californiano Donny McCaslin. Mas este ano há uma novidade. O festival é apresentado uma semana antes da data do primeiro concerto, dia 17 de outubro, com a estreia do filme documental «A Tensão Jazz». Uma excelente oportunidade para conhecer melhor a história do jazz em Portugal, um trabalho da responsabilidade do realizador Paulo Seabra e do crítico Rui Neves. A finalizar a noite, um concerto com o pianista argentino, Pablo Lapidusas, um músico muito versátil, que privilegia as atuações a solo, e que em 2012 editou o seu segundo trabalho, também em piano solo, em parte gravado em Portugal. Charles Mingus was and still is considered to be one of the best Jazz Bass player ever. This is for sure but his unknown contribution to Jazz is not recognized by mainstream music listener. His innovative form of improvisation of instruments was his golden contribution. He composed almost all of the songs you him play. In this post I will give the reader and listener as much information so they can go on and explore this man’s work. I will also include a Musical Jazz Special I made which featured the CD Album “The Mingus Dynasty.” I’ll start here with Biography:One of the most important figures in twentieth century American music, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer. Born on a military base in Nogales, Arizona in 1922 and raised in Watts, California, his earliest musical influences came from the church– choir and group singing– and from “hearing Duke Ellington over the radio when [he] was eight years old.” He studied double bass and composition in a formal way (five years with H. Rheinshagen, principal bassist of the New York Philharmonic, and compositional techniques with the legendary Lloyd Reese) while absorbing vernacular music from the great jazz masters, first-hand. His early professional experience, in the 40′s, found him touring with bands like Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton......Continue Here

Mais um programa especial. Depois de um longo período de ausência, resolvi fazer um set só de pedradas jazzísticas com grandes clássicos da música norte-americana. Ressaltando que não houve uma intenção em delimitar estilos, seguir o desenvolvimento cronologicamente de forma linear, a única preocupação foi selecionar grandes instrumentistas e orquestras em seus períodos mais profícuos, mais nada. Assim, começo com a mais pesada de todas as Big Bands, Count Basie e seus companheiros de várias noitadas em Kansas City, vale lembrar que uma das maiores lendas do jazz, Lester Young foi o sax tenor de Basie, refererência absoluta de dez entre dez saxofonistas de jazz, de Charlie Parker à Sonny Rollins e Coltrane, vale à pena notar o vigor dos seus solos arrasadores e sempre bem acompanhados por Basie. Para quem quiser se aprofundar mais, indico o filme de Robert Altman, Kansas City, onde vocês poderão acompanhar as noites conturbadas e quentes da cidade em questão, a trilha sonora do filme fica por conta de Count Basie Orchestra ( interpretada por excelentes músicos )que toca às noites todas no club subterrãneo da cidade. O filme trás ainda um duelo insano entre Lester Young e Coleman Hawkins, - a outra grande referência dos saxofonistas de jazz -, confronto este assistido por ninguém menos que um menino, cujo sobrenome é Parker e que logo viria a ser um dos maiores jazzman do século. A faixa que aqui apresento de Basie é Every Tub do álbum Basie Boogie. Outro grande nome do Jazz, Duke Ellington, vem na seqüência, com grande sensibilidade e peso, Boo Dah é um estrondo suave e noturno que com solos metálicos compõem uma obra prima verdadeiramente moderna e norte-americana. J. J. Johnson é representado aqui com a faixa Neo, com seu potente trombone é acompanhado por Harold Mabern no piano, Arthur Harper no baixo e Frank Gant na bateria. Neo é uma inegável evidência (Proof Positive) de que o jazz, a despeito das críticas acadêmicas, consolidou-se como um estilo autêntico e legítimo da música contemporânea. Em seguida, uma faixa de um dos discos que considero um dos dez mais importantes da história do Jazz, a faixa é Dear Old Stokholm, o álbum é Round About Midnight e os interpretes; John Coltrane – sax tenor, Red Garland – piano, Paul Chambers – baixo e Philly Joe Jones na bateria, são liderados pelo mais sensível trompetista e bandleader da história do jazz , Miles Davis. Já que Coltrane aparece na faixa anterior, nada melhor do que uma composição em que este aparece liderando seu próprio quarteto, em uma das suas fase mais profícuas e originais, Coltrane compõe Song of the Underground Railroad. Aqui a música é executada por Coltrane no sax tenor, McCoy Tyner no piano, Reggie Workman no baixo, Elvin Jones na bateria, e uma curiosidade todas as faixas deste álbum, The Complete Afrika/Brass Sessions, são conduzidas por Eric Dolphin. Continuando nossa agradável viagem por esta estrada férrea e sinuosa jornada nos deparamos com outro mestre, Charles Mingus e uma pedrada atordoante, Boogie Stop Shuffle, com o peso e a exuberância única de Mingus que avança com ritmos inusitados. Infelizmente, não posso colocar o trabalho todo, mas fica aqui indicado outro disco fundamental do Jazz, Mingus Ah Hum, sua audição é obrigatória. Agora quem se apresenta por meu intermédio é Sonny Rollins, um dos grandes saxofonistas dos 50-60. Um artista inquieto sempre recriando-se a si mesmo sem se diluir em suas recriações. Solos objetivos e swingados, espirituais e extrovertidos que apresentam um músico conseguindo equilibrar os mais antagônicos paradoxos. Acompanhado por músicos do porte de Max Roach na bateria, Tommy Flanagan no piano e Doug Watkins no baixo compreendemos que a música é uma linguagem capaz de estabelecer a comunicação e a sintonia entre almas de uma modo que possivelmente nenhuma outra linguagem pode fazer. Finalizando, um dos nomes mais injustiçados da história do jazz, pouco reconhecido, morto jovem, talento precoce. Lee Morgan é um nome que rivalizaria com o próprio Miles davis, se este é agraciado com uma sensibilidade única, Lee Morgan é detentor de uma precisão inigualável. O brilho dos solos de trompete inconfundível foi apagado em 19 de fevereiro de 72, morto pela amante com um tiro no coração, morreu sobre o palco, sendo seu último sopro uma nota expelida pelo trompete. Aos 33 anos deixou um fértil legado que aos poucos estou conhecendo. Acompanhado por nomes como Wayne Shorter, sax tenor, Grant Green na guitarra e Herbie Hancock no piano criaram o álbum Search for the New Land, outra pérola recomendada a todos.
