OFI 1611: How To Create A Nationwide Agricultural Publication | Kate Ziehm | Morning Ag Clips

OFI 1611: How To Create A Nationwide Agricultural Publication | Kate Ziehm | Morning Ag Clips

Kate Ziehm is the president and owner of Morning Ag Clips and has an incredible story of agricultural entrepreneurship.  There are many ways and motivations that form people into entrepreneurs, Kate's was lifestyle.  Many times people choose entrepreneurship for lifestyle purposes thinking it is going to bring them passive income and the famous "four hour workweek".  Kate's lifestyle was a bit different than that.  She was adjusting to being a single mother of three sons, and being there to raise them was her #1 priority.  Entrepreneurship was what was going to allow her to fulfill that vision.

When Kate took over Morning Ag Clips it was simply an email sent to a list about agricultural issues in the State Of New York.  Kate's vision, passion for agriculture and love of this business led to massive growth under her ownership.  Today Morning Ag Clips publishes 28 versions, covering 35 states, with employees spread all over the country.  It has evolved from the email list to a website and most recently, a mobile app!

Kate is truly an inspiration in agriculture, and in today's episode we get to share her story.

    127. How apps get built to be addictive: the Hook Model

    127. How apps get built to be addictive: the Hook Model

Why do you keep checking your phone, even when you’re trying not to? It's because the apps on your phone use the Hook Model. described by Nir Eyal in his book Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products.

To learn how apps like Instagram, LinkedIn and Vivino keep us coming back to our screens, listen to this episode.

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • Habits are behaviours done with little or no conscious thought
    • If your product becomes a habit, people will use it more. You will spend less on advertising and make more money.
    • The greatest return on investment generally comes from increasing the product's ease of use.
      • If you want to improve a product, first look at the design: where you can make it more simple to use. E.g. can you require less information from users when they first sign up?
    • The Hook model consists of 4 steps
      1. Trigger: you get a notification that someone commented on your post
      2. Action: you open LinkedIn / Instagram to see the comment
      3. Variable Reward: you find out what the comment was and by whom. Depending on these factors, you might feel happy, sad, excited, disappointed
      4. Investment: you make another post – this is an investment of your time and energy, and you keep coming back for more.

    107. Top questions to ask about an app to become smart money

    107. Top questions to ask about an app to become smart money

To become SMART MONEY as an investor, founder or corporate innovator, you have to know what questions to ask about a product. This helps you spot signs of early success or early warning.

Listen to this episode to learn what questions to ask and how to link product innovation to business strategy.

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • The questions fall into three buckets:
      1. How do my best customers behave?
      2. What are the characteristics of my best customers?
      3. What has to happen for them to abandon the product?
    • For bucket 1, you could ask:
      • What features do my most active users use?
      • What screens do they visit?
      • How often do they open the app?
      • What time of day do they open it and on which days?
    • For bucket 2, you could ask:
      • Where did these customers come from?
      • What are their demographics? Are there any patterns?
    • For bucket 3, you could ask:
      • What screens tend to be the last screen that people get to before they shut down the app?
      • What prices of other apps they use have?

    98. Feature creep – why apps get too complicated

    98. Feature creep – why apps get too complicated

When an app has too many features and pop ups, most users get confused and frustrated. This is feature creep: when the product’s core functionality becomes hidden in too many options and things to do.

Feature creep happens when a team is determined to stay productive, but loses sight of its strategy. Sometimes stopping is better for the product than doing more.

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • Feature creep is problematic for two main reasons: it confuses users and it costs money. This is because product teams have to be paid to design and code, and you also have to pay cloud costs to store your pointless features.
    • Feature creep happens when there is a pressure to produce, which is contrary to the ability to focus. It can be easier to present new features as productivity to investors and corporate bosses, rather than saying that the product team took time to review results and reflect.
    • To prevent feature creep, go back to the fundamental product development questions you’ve learnt here:
      • What problem is our product solving?
      • Who are we solving it for?
      • Who is willing to pay to solve this problem?
      • What other solutions do they have to this problem?
    • Keep your eyes on the user, not the product. Feature creep happens when you get obsessed with the product and forget the user. It should be the other way around.

    82. Intro to agile for non-techies

    82. Intro to agile for non-techies

Agile is now a ubiquitous management term, but few people understand what it means in practice.

For some products, agile is THE BEST system, for others, it is THE WORST.

Listen to this week’s episode to find out what it is, how it works in practice, when to use it and when to avoid it.

You’ll hear how WhatsApp used this methodology to release its first product, and learn how to use it yourself.

    Learning notes from this episode:

    • There are two methodologies to make things: waterfall and agile.
    • Waterfall came from manufacturing and construction and emphasises planning in order to release a perfect product. For example, if you’re building a house, you need to plan ahead and only let people move in to live in it when it is complete.
    • Agile methodology is an iterative process, used by software developers. Simple changes get released frequently, in response to user needs or technological changes. The product is by definition never complete, because it is always changing.

Ep. 026 - Breaking Down The Barriers Around Financial Literacy

From online banking to digital payment processing, the fintech industry has evolved and continues to evolve tremendously.

In this episode, I have an open and honest conversation about finances with FinTech entrepreneur, Co-Founder and CEO of Ostrich, William Glass.

His mission is improving financial well-being globally. As founder & CEO of his company, Ostrich, William’s mobile app addresses financial literacy deficits by
creating social community and accountability around money - think saving & investing with friends.
In addition, William hosts the Silicon Alley Podcast providing a platform for entrepreneurs from all
industries and backgrounds to tell their stories. William owns rental property and was a successful
tech sales rep before starting his own business. He was also a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand. William is
originally from Alabama and now resides in New York City.
