    Meet Guest Macon Dunnagan:

In 1999, a stroke of luck awarded Macon Dunnagan two free tickets to South Africa, setting in motion a journey that would change his life forever. With unwavering determination, Macon seized the opportunity and embarked on a path less traveled. In a remarkable feat, January 2000 saw Macon standing triumphantly atop Kilimanjaro, Africa’s towering pinnacle and the world's tallest free-standing mountain at an astounding 19,340 feet (5,895 meters). This accomplishment was all the more awe-inspiring, considering his prior experience had never taken him beyond 4,000 feet, and he had never even spent a night in a sleeping bag.

Fast forward to June 2023, Macon completed his 50th summit of Kilimanjaro and has penned abook, “Sons of Kilimanjaro”.  Today, Macon's boundless enthusiasm for exploration has found its purpose as he leads others on transformative voyages through a partnership with Zara Tour, based in Tanzania.

EPISODE 23: CYCLING SOLO FROM DJIBOUTI TO CLIMB MT. KILIMANJARO

EPISODE 23: CYCLING SOLO FROM DJIBOUTI TO CLIMB MT. KILIMANJARO

What does it take to fulfil your dream of travelling from the lowest to the highest point in Africa?

In January 2011, Kyle Henning left the shores of Lake Assal, Djibouti (508 feet below sea level), destined for the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (19,341 feet above sea level). For sixty-eight days, he travelled by bicycle and on foot to connect the lowest point on the African continent to the summit of its highest mountain, following the Great Rift Valley from the Afar Depression through the Horn of Africa. Traveling alone after finishing his Peace Corps service, he faced the physical demands of cycling through four countries, growing uncertainty as the Arab Spring gripped the continent, and the effects of his own post-traumatic stress from four intense years of working in crisis/disaster management in the USA and his international work in the Peace Corps.

We also discuss how his 10-year-old beginner mountain bike stood up to the harsh road and weather conditions, the kit he took, how he made provisions for water and food, and some of the hair-raising experiences he had cycling including being chased by a local woman with a seven feet spear, before being met with the ultimate challenge: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!

Kyle Henning was worn in Buffalo, New York, USA, and has spent part of his career working in the Peace Corps service and has recently returned to Washington after being based in South America for the Department of State.  You can follow Kyle on Instagram at @FromAfarBook or email him at FromAfarBook@gmail.com

Don't mind the gap ft. Chaitanya Motwane, Student

Don't mind the gap ft. Chaitanya Motwane, Student
If we recollect, the first 20 years of our life were more or less predefined by the state. Preschool, school, college, and university. Like guinea pigs on a wheel, we kept going and stopped only when the state-mandated prescriptions were done and we had to think for ourselves. And in spite of working so hard all through the years, we had no clue what to do next.

So, meet Chaitanya Motwane. He is 20, done with the 12th grade and he has been accepted by a prestigious university abroad. But he chose to step away from the wheel, decline the online classes and defer joining to make the most of the classes. Stuck with a gap year and no plans of what to do next, he ended up having the best lessons outside of a classroom. He spent the year trekking in the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro, to Scuba Diving in the Andamans. It was a discomfort zone for him but he made it to tell the tale.

Catch Chaitanya speak to Gauri about his adventures and how breaking out of the system was such a liberating experience.

EP19: Body Image, Building Muscle, and Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with Holly C.

In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview our inspiring client, Holly. She's been working with us for two years, and in that time she's lost body fat, learned how to do pull-ups, and track macros while navigating any weight room with confidence.

Holly shares her experience doing mission work in Africa and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. We've had lots of fun conversations on the many hikes we've gone on together, and what I admire most about Holly is her patience and ability to remain open-minded. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
