    Kevin Tufts

    Kevin Tufts

Kevin Tufts is the real deal when it comes to tech and design. With over two decades of experience working across a number of companies in the Bay Area — Lyft, SendGrid, and Twilio, to name a few — he’s now a product designer at Meta working on their Creation team. So believe me, we had a LOT to talk about.

Our conversation begin with a look at the current climate inside Meta (pre-Threads, FYI), and he gave some thoughts on where the company is going as it approaches its 20th anniversary. From there, Kevin talked about his path to becoming a product designer, and we took a trip down memory lane recalling the early days of web design and what it was like working during such rapidly changing times. He also spoke on what he loves about product design now, and how he wants to help the next generation of designers through mentorship.

Kevin’s secrets to success are simple: seize opportunities for growth where you can, embrace collaboration, and remain flexible. Now that’s something I think we could all take to heart!

Architectural Origins, Artistic Journeys: Elijah Trice's Creative Odyssey

Architectural Origins, Artistic Journeys: Elijah Trice's Creative Odyssey

Welcome to 'The Truth in This Art' podcast, hosted by Rob Lee, engage in this meaningful conversation with Elijah Trice, a Baltimore-native contemporary artist and architectural designer, who hails from a family of diverse artists. Developing his skills in figurative drawing from a young age, he explored mediums like graphite and charcoal. After earning his B.S. in Architecture from Morgan State University and gaining experience in the field, he pursued his passion for painting at Rhode Island School of Design, where an introductory course shifted his creative trajectory. Combining his architectural background, Trice is a multidisciplinary artist with a profound focus on drawing and painting. He anticipates graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design soon.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • How Elijah's architectural background informs his multidisciplinary artistry and adds a distinct layer to his creations.
    • How the pandemic rekindled Elijah's passion for art and delve into his process of weaving others' narratives into his work.
    • Elijah's approach to fame and the power of letting his art take center stage, allowing audiences to connect with his pieces on a personal level.
    • The world of constraints in Elijah's artistry, examining how limitations like time and color drive his creativity and push artistic boundaries.

Elijah discovered his passion for art at a young age and pursued it through high school and college. However, he eventually decided to study architecture in college, feeling discouraged by the idea of being a starving artist. It wasn't until the COVID-19 pandemic hit that Elijah rediscovered his love for art and started painting. His work now focuses on telling other people's stories and using color to convey emotions. Elijah finds inspiration in the city of Providence and the diverse experiences of the people he meets there. He also values obscurity and prefers to let his work speak for itself rather than seeking fame. Elijah incorporates constraints into his work, such as time limits and limited color palettes, to challenge himself and foster creativity.

    Mitsu Salmon

    Mitsu Salmon

Welcome back and happy Volume 3 Process Fam!

We start our volume off with the multidisciplinary artist, Mitsu Salmon.  I first saw Mitsu perform at Links Hall back in 2017. The best way I can describe Mitsu’s work is that it’s patient.  Mitsu will make you listen.  There is both honesty and bravery in her movement.  My brain and my body were connected in a really beautiful and unique way as an audience member.   Mitsu makes you slow down and really digest the gift that she's giving you on stage.

Today, we'll be talking about her latest work Orchid: Dormancy and Becoming, which weaves together motifs of mythology, heritage, imperialism, botany, sexuality, racism, and more.  Mitsu performed this work publicly right in the middle of the pandemic at the Ragdale Foundation and in today's co-host, Sara Zalek’s backyard in Humboldt Park.  I’m really looking forward to talking to them both about the process of making this live performance during the pandemic.

My co-host is  interdisciplinary artist Sara Zalek.  She's invested and curious about every piece and square inch of Chicago dance.  Their work is “Rooted in physical investigations of trauma, resilience, and transformation, their work is intimate, raw, poetic.”  Sara is also one of my favorite people to see in an audience during a performance.  They have this contagious joy when it comes to movement.

    Lafiya Watson Ramirez

It's still pretty early in 2021, so if the year hasn't quite gotten off to a good start, then let this week's conversation with Lafiya Watson Ramirez be the permission you need to turn things around! Lafiya dabbles in several media -- web, photography, augmented reality, mixed reality -- and creates new projects for herself and for her clients through her company, Bad Chick Studios.

We talked about how she started her studio, and from there she shared the resources and programs she used to teach herself AR and XR. (Spoiler alert: a lot of these tools are free!) Lafiya also spoke on how her love for photography led her to web design and learning Flash, and how embracing becoming a generalist has changed her work and how she perceives herself as a creative.

Get a bit of inspiration from Lafiya and learn what you can!
