    289. Effective Ministry in Small Rural Churches

    289. Effective Ministry in Small Rural Churches

When it comes to planting and revitalizing churches, rural America is a forgotten field. It faces a variety of demographic and economic challenges, and the rural pastorate often means bivocational ministry in small congregations. In consequence, rural ministry is not an option for many would-be pastors.

Gerad Strong thinks it should be. I’ll be talking to him about effective ministry in small rural churches in this episode of the Influence Podcast. I’m George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host.

Gerad Strong served as lead pastor of Bethel Church in Rapid City, South Dakota, before becoming director of Discovery and Development for the Church Multiplication Network in Springfield, Missouri. He pioneered Bethel’s use of multisite models to serve rural churches in his region, and is author of The Forgotten Field: Using Multisite Models to Reach and Revive Rural Communities with the Gospel, published by Baxter Press.

Rohan and Jill Bell pastor the C3 Church in Thirroul NSW Australia, and Rohan is our guest on this episode!

In ministry since 1992, Rohan and Jill have been involved at almost every level of pastoral ministry, while raising five children and now enjoying two grandchildren. Their church is in three locations, and it's like pastoring three 200churches at the same time.

Rohan is gifted administratively, and it's great to hear how he is staying in his lane, while training and deploying others to use their ministry gifts to grow the Kingdom of God.

I met Rohan in John Finkelde's HUB over at GrowAHealthyChurch.com, which you should absolutely check out! John is a frequent guest on the podcast.

Enjoy this great conversation with a pastor who is on the journey... just - like - you!

#36: Open source authoring: creating a new CMS guidebook

Writing a TYPO3 Guidebook as a Collective Effort

With upwards of 600 features, writing about a fully featured, open source CMS like TYPO3 can be a challenge. In this episode, Felicity Brand, Heather McNamee, and Jeffrey A. McGuire talk about how they co-authored a TYPO3 guidebook in concert with the TYPO3 community.

    The need for this guidebook

As Jeffrey A. McGuire tells it, TYPO3 wanted a book for a diverse audience, ranging from developers, newbies, project analysts, students, educators, integrators, and digital agencies. He explains that while getting the commission to write the book, “They told us there hasn’t been a book for beginners for a while, and we’ve got this idea that our system is ready to get back out into the world.”

Every huge task is made up of smaller steps

A book is an enormous project, and it can be hard to know where to start. But as Felicity Brand says, “Writing a book is just like any other writing task. We put a lot of effort into planning at the start. You create a guide, a framework, and then you start putting these building blocks in place.” Heather McNamee says at Open Strategy Partners, they try to approach every task, even big ones like this guidebook, “the same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time.”

The strength of the TYPO3 community contributed to their success

All three guests today acknowledge how much the strength of the TYPO3 community helped them in the creation of this guidebook.

    • Large, well-established, active, and diverse. Heather says, “We really couldn’t have done it without the subject-matter-experts, the incredible documentation team, and the people who blog about TYPO3.”
    • Welcoming to newcomers. As Heather puts it, “The TYPO3 community is ready to scale,” and they actively reach out to help onboard beginners and stakeholders.
    • Leadership is accessible and approachable. Despite being new to the TYPO3 community, Felicity was able to speak with leadership directly to research this guidebook.
    •  The community gives back. The TYPO3 community actively supports and contributes to other important projects that many of us rely on like PHP Unit, Symfony, and Composer.

    What’s next for TYPO3 in 2021

TYPO3 CMS has more big plans to start 2021 off right. Says Felicity, “For version 11 the big push is accessibility, usability, and improved developer experience with making sure upgrades are really smooth and easy.”

#4: TYPO3 10.4.1 and your peace of mind

#4: TYPO3 10.4.1 and your peace of mind

TYPO3: From underdog to international CMS

TYPO3 is a free, open source CMS that’s been around for 23 years. Universities, airlines, banks, and cruise ships around the world use it and love it for its reliability, structure, and stability. Robert Douglass compares TYPO3’s success to a “David and Goliath story, where the scrappy open source project came along and overthrew proprietary software.”

TYPO3’s unique multisite and multilingual capabilities

TYPO3’s strong multisite and multilingual capabilities make it a popular choice for international companies who manage multiple brands. TYPO3 can support thousands of sites, users, and pages within a single install, all stored in one database.

Luisa Faßbender, TYPO3 Marketing Team Lead, says, “These companies are all around the world, and they don’t want to have 20 different websites and backgrounds. TYPO3 enables us to create really easy, fast, and good-performing websites effortlessly.”

The 10.4.1 LTS release benefits developers, marketers, and users

TYPO3 already has features that help make developers’ and marketers’ jobs easier: like an easily navigable page-tree structure, easy extensibility, and a steady release cycle. The 10.4.1 release provides even more new and exciting features to explore.

    For marketers and editors

    • realURL included
    • Update slugs more easily
    • Redirect management

    For developers

    • Core-wide dependency injection
    • Get rid of APIs with Doctrine Dbal

    For users

    • Integrated dashboard

TYPO3 has challenges, but it’s built for the long run

TYPO3 meets the needs of specific audiences very well, and it won’t be the right CMS for everyone. You’ll need technical knowledge to use it—like PHP and relevant web technologies. But as Benni Mack, the CTO of b13 GmbH, says, “If you build something with TYPO3, it may take you a bit of effort, but you can run it for a long time. TYPO3 is not there for building a website and throwing it down 8 weeks later. TYPO3 sites are here to stay.”

TYPO3’s new release is more of the same -- and that’s a good thing

Over time, TYPO3 has built itself a dedicated community with its reliability, stability, and great multisite and multilingual support. The 10.4.1 LTS release keeps up TYPO3’s standards while improving the daily lives of your developers, marketers, and users.

There are LOTS of resources your church has that can help minister to peoples needs at your microsite. Mingo and Esli draw the line between being a Savior and a vessel, and give some practical ideas for how to tether what already exists to your newly established microsite. Mingo also goes on a deep and personal rant on why we should NEVER "love on people" - but rather be very intentional about how we want to love people well. @micrositegirl & @micrositeguy
