#403 Do Foam Rollers Actually Help You Recover Faster?

Do foam rollers and massage tools actually help you recover faster from tough workouts? Get the real science behind these popular recovery techniques.

In this episode, I dive into a new research review on using self-massage for addressing muscle pain and restricted mobility associated with intense exercise like resistance training. I summarize findings on the efficacy of common self-massage tools - including foam rollers, massage balls, vibrating rollers - and interprets how average gym-goers can apply the science to their own fitness routines.

    Learn:

    • The proposed mechanisms behind why self-massage provides acute benefits
    • How does foam rolling compare to massage sticks for pressure and mobilization
    • The limited evidence on long-term efficacy and injury/performance impacts
    • Caution about claims that self-massage boosts athletic performance
    • The role self-massage can play before exercise as part of a warm-up
    • Safe self-massage techniques to avoid nerve damage
    • How the average person can use self-massage to manage delayed onset muscle soreness

Get clarity on what the research says so far regarding self-massage for mobility and recovery. Discover tips for smart incorporation into your own exercise programming.

    Quotable moments:

"So instead of going to a massage therapist, they're using these devices, different self massage tools, like foam rollers, massage balls and percussion massagers, like a Theragun aim to improve blood flow and mobility while lowering. the perception of pain." - Dr. Erik Korem

"Foam rolling may provide greater pressure and tissue mobilization compared to like roller massagers, like massage sticks. So if you're taking a massage stick and just massaging your quads, versus laying on a foam roller which has got your whole body bearing down on it. It's going to provide more pressure." - Dr. Erik Korem

"I actually like these things. It's like a regular foam roller and there's like a, you know, vibration device in there. And I like to kind of do a trigger where I'll just kind of sit on an area and then move the area." - Dr. Erik Korem

Muscle and Joint Pain in Hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's

Muscle and Joint Pain in Hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's

While not everyone with hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto’s experiences muscle and joint pain, it’s not uncommon for this to occur.

At the same time, some other conditions and factors can lead to muscle spasms, muscle pain, or joint pain that are not directly related to a thyroid condition.

Today, I’m sharing the top causes you should look for if you’re experiencing muscle or joint pain.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:
    - How common muscle and joint pain are in people with hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto’s
    - Trauma and poor posture as potential causes of muscle and joint pain
    - How certain foods can contribute to muscle and joint pain, especially in people with autoimmune conditions
    - My approach to oxalate-containing foods
    - The connection between infections, such as Lyme disease and Epstein-Barr, and muscle and joint pain
    - Why it’s worth investigating arthritis, overtraining, and nutrient deficiencies as potential causes

As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!

Betty's Story From Anti Weed to Budtender: Plus Her Tips For Using Cannabis Discreetly As A Mom, Managing Scoliosis, and Why Dispensaries Aren't Intimidating At All

THIS episode right here is Mama Chill Club. It’s two mamas coming together, talking about where we are at in motherhood, sharing tips and finding community through the chaos. How fun and tough motherhood is and how we utilize cannabis for calming, creativity, and not a bandaid to just get through the day.

Betty is so many things. She’s relatable, she’s the epitome of caring, she has a heart of gold. Her journey begins being opposed to cannabis becaue “I’m a mom, I can’t buy weed” to passionate budtender with a passion for helping anyone that comes through the dispensary door.

We demystify the process of going to a dispensary (where you purchase cannabis) to what questions to ask, how to utilize the budtenders (the hospitality you are purchasing cannabis from) and why the whole experience is not intimidating at all. All our nerves and fears around buying weed are invalid, because you are walking into a group of people that found healing or coping and want to help you heal and cope too!

Budtenders are a wealth of knowledge for so many reasons. From the trainings they take, the passion they have for something that has changed their own life, and its really one of the only places you can go to that all the employees are trying the products, you get reviews and recommendations right from the source! There’s a ton of products, products to use the product and it can be overwhelming, if you go in and be honest about where you are, they can meet you where you’re at.

We cover a ton in this episode, and you will walk away from this episode with so much confidence to approach your first time in a dispensary or continue to deepen your knowledge of yourself and your body to find what works best for you! Because that’s what it’s all about, not something to avoid pain or problems, its medicine that can help you work through or find relief to get better.

PEMF Therapy: The Wonders of Healing Using Energy Waves

PEMF Therapy: The Wonders of Healing Using Energy Waves

PEMF is an acronym for Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field. PEMF therapy consists of a mat which emits pulses of energy waves.  Dr. Armitstead explains in this episode that PEMF energy courses through the body directly to inflamed or injured areas. The energy is also drawn to areas experiencing chronic pain.  The energy waves of the PEMF mat passes through the organs and tissues and into the cells of your body, amplifying the cellular energy. The increase in energy promotes a natural reaction that regenerates and enhances the efficiency of the cell’s function. This natural process stimulates healing and helps to improve your overall well-being including your mood.

During a PEMF session you lay on the mat that produces the PEMF and the energy goes into the body without you feeling anything.  The energy is that subtle to not disturb the body’s natural process as it goes into the cells.  Besides giving cells energy it also helps increase blood flow which is also part of the healing.  With increased blood flow it is promoting an increase in the blood’s oxygen levels.  In causing the body to have more oxygen that’s how chronic pain and stiffness is reduced among other health benefits.

Dr. Armitstead explains how with 20 minutes of PEMF therapy  once a week for 6 weeks helps with conditions like fibromyalgia, muscle pain, arthritis, depression, anxiety, tinnitus, PTSD, Lyme’s, chronic fatigue and musculoskeletal pain.  PEMF therapy is a great option for natural, chemical free pain relief and overall wellness because it functions through cell stimulation. Stimulation at a cellular level helps boost the body’s natural ability to fight back against inflammation. PEMF therapy is so effective because it is able to penetrate through skin, muscle, and even the bone. The electromagnetic field helps fight back against cellular damage and inflammation, and rejuvenate and create healthier cells.  Healthier cells equals a healthier you!
