THE CARL ARRINGTON ARCHIVE Episode 6 features an excerpt of Carl's series of interviews with OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN, recorded at her home in Malibu in January of 1982.  This excerpt from several hours of original interviews with the late great and beloved music icon was conducted when she was hitting a kind of career peak when her steamy song “Physical” became a Number One hit.  These conversations became the basis for her People Magazine cover article in February of that same year.  Carl talked with Olivia over lunch in her house in Malibu, California where she was happy to explain how she recorded her songs, her daily life when she isn't working, Hollywood friends, and her great love of animals. You can hear some of her pack of pet dogs yelping a bit in the background.

"I think people forget that journalism is a craft and you learn and you hone your craft, and there are people  who write their opinions and their views and they don't actually have anything to back it up with, and a lot of it got replaced by salacious gossip rather than the craft of the music."

On today's episode, I have a good, overdue chat with Music Journalist Angharad Williams.  We talk about her journey into this profession, artists that she has met within her career, the changing landscape of the industry, and she shares some pearls of wisdom to any aspiring musicians and journalists.  We also talk about all things Hip-Hop, Irish, and naturally Welsh, and in particular, certain pronunciations.  And of course, we discuss the quote and saying that continually inspires and influences her.

Angharad Williams is a half Welsh / half Irish journalist. She grew up in a small village in boryh Wales, then spent the first few years of her career working as a music journalist in London. Angharad now lives and work in Dublin and has worked for titles including the Metro Herald, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Independent, The Irish Sun and Welsh language publications. Angharad is a fluent Welsh speaker and is a regular contributor to the Welsh language radio station BBC Radio Cymru.

Ankathie Koi heißt eigentlich Katharina Winklbauer und kommt ursprünglich aus Bayern. Die heute 36-Jährige studierte in Linz Jazzgesang und lebt seit 2009 in Wien, wo sie als Teil des Duos Fijuka auftrat. Seit 2015 gibt es die Kunstfigur Ankathie Koi bei deren Auftritten schrille Outfits, 80' Sound und der Signature-Vokuhila nie fehlen. 2016 hat Ankathie Koi das Wiener Popfest co-kuratiert, 2017 brachte sie ihr erstes Album unter dem Titel „I hate the way you chew“ heraus, 2018 war sie für den FM4 Amadeus Award nominiert. Das zweite und neue Album heißt Prominent Libido. 

In dieser Folge erzählt Ankathie Koi, wie der Titelsong Prominent Libido entstanden ist, was eine Reise nach Mexiko mit dem Song zu tun hat und was sie mit dem Begriff Prominent Libido überhaupt meint.

My Ugly Clementine gibt es zwar erst seit diesem Frühjahr, Newcomerinnen sind die Bandmitglieder aber keine. Leyya Frontfrau und Co-Produzentin Sophie Lindinger hat sich für ihr neues Bandprojekt Mira Lu Kovacs (5KHD, Schmieds Puls), Katrin Kolleritsch (Kerosin95, Kaiko) und Barbara Jungreithmeier (Daffodils) an Bord geholt. Wenn vier szenebekannte Musikerinnen eine Band gründen, kann das nur ein Erfolg werden. Das bestätigt auch der ersten Hype den My Ugly Clementine bereits erlebt haben. Ihr erstes Konzert im Wiener Rhiz war binnen weniger Stunden ausverkauft und das obwohl noch kein einziger Ton, sondern nur ein Foto der Band veröffentlicht war.

Mittlerweile hat My Ugly Clementine zwei Songs veröffentlicht – die erste Single Never Be Yours landete auf dem ersten Platz der FM4 Charts – und auch am ersten Album wird gearbeitet. In dieser Folge erzählt Sophie Lindinger nicht nur wie die Band sondern auch der zweite bisher veröffentlichte Song The Good The Bad The Ugly entstanden ist. Die Message des Songs ist wie die Band selbst - klar feministisch, es geht ums Frau sein im Musikbusiness.

Avec schreibt seit sie 12 Jahre alt ist ihre eigenen Songs und landet 2015 einen ersten Hit mit dem Song Granny. 2016, 2017 und 2019 war die heute 24-jährige Oberösterreicherin in unterschiedlichen Kategorien für den Amadeus Award nominiert. 2019 hat sie die Auszeichnung dann in der Kategorie Alternative auch gewonnen. Bis jetzt hat Avec eine EP und zwei Alben veröffentlicht.

In der Single Under Water geht es um Mental Health, Avec verarbeitet in dem Song ihre eigenen Depressionen und Angstzustände. Gemeinsam mit Andreas Häuserer erklärt sie in dieser Folge, wie der Song entstanden ist und warum es gleich drei Versionen von Under Water gibt. Außerdem erzählen die beiden, wie die Albumaufnahmen zum letzten Album Heaven/Hell in Irland waren und warum der Song trotz der ernsten Thematik happy klingt.
