Ep 16 - Part 2: The Funnest Thing That Happened - The Mutiny on the Bounty

We are running late this week due to travel, so let's re-release! This is a top-notch story - The Mutiny on the Bounty! The Bounty was headed to Tahiti to learn how to propagate breadfruit for nefarious reasons - but there was plenty of back and forth and infighting and wanting to stay in Tahiti, bad leadership, and a mutiny!

So fun. Hope you love it.

The Mystery of the Carroll A. Deering

The Mystery of the Carroll A. Deering

The early 1920's was a time that saw numerous vessels vanish in the Atlantic Ocean. The Carroll A. Deering didn't vanish, but its crew did, and then washed up on the dangerous Diamond Shoals off the coast of North Carolina.

Was it mutiny? Captain Wormell and his first mate did not get along and everyone knew it. German U-boats were a thing of the past, and so were pirates, right? Was it Russians? Or the work of the not-yet-known Bermuda Triangle?

We may never know. The Carroll A. Deering (along with the nearby disappearance of the S.S. Hewitt) may go down as one of the greatest unsolved mysteries ever.

2023 in Review: Will a short-lived mutiny be the end of Russia’s Wagner Group?

2023 in Review: Will a short-lived mutiny be the end of Russia’s Wagner Group?

As the year wraps up, we're looking back at ten of the episodes that defined our year at The Take. This originally aired on June 27.

After the events of the last few days, there seems to be no place for Wagner anymore in President Vladimir Putin’s Russia. This weekend, the mercenaries began a shocking new march, not towards Ukraine, but to Moscow. While an apparent compromise has been reached, questions remain about how this happened as quickly as it did, what it means for Russia's leadership, and how it could reshape the war in Ukraine.

Evil For Evil's Sake: The Comstock Mutiny (Part 1)

Evil For Evil's Sake: The Comstock Mutiny (Part 1)

Our story begins on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket in the early 1800s with young baby Samuel Comstock. His life from infancy to adulthood bore every mark of evil foreboding.

Part one covers until the completion of his heinous mutiny, long considered one of the worst, if not the very worst, in American history. Warning -  this gets pretty gruesome!

For more, like Part 2 of Evil For Evil's Sake, ad-free and released early, find me on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/outcastsanddissidence

Part two will cover the wild aftermath and the voyage back to Nantucket for the few fortunate survivors. Further, I also looked more deeply into what became of these survivors.

    Sources:

The Life of Samuel Comstock, the Terrible Whaleman Containing an Account of the Mutiny, and Massacre of the Officers of the Ship Globe by his brother, William Comstock, in 1840 provides insight into mainly Samuel's earlier years, as well as accounts from their younger brother George who was a survivor of the voyage and letters home. The most interesting part of this account is that throughout William refers to Samuel as "our hero" when he was definitely an antagonist...

Mutiny on the Globe by Edwin P. Hoyt (1975, 2003) provides extensive information about whaling and, of course, the voyage, mutiny, and aftermath. This author also researched the survivors, but I expanded upon his research.

William Lay and Cyrus M. Hussey's A Narrative of the Mutiny, on Board the Ship Globe, of Nantucket, in the Pacific Ocean, Jan. 1824  not only reveals the boys' experience of the mutiny and aftermath but also gives insight into life and culture of the Mulgraves in the deep Pacific in the 19th century -  amazing stuff! It also outlines their trip home and provides some contributions from George.

Information on the survivors was found on findagrave.com, newspapers.com, and ancestry.com

Who Can Stop a Dictator? Resistance to the War in Ukraine (with Sasha de Vogel, Serhii Plokhy, and Alexandra Vacroux)

Who Can Stop a Dictator? Resistance to the War in Ukraine (with Sasha de Vogel, Serhii Plokhy, and Alexandra Vacroux)

When the Wagner mercenary group staged a near coup in Moscow in June, it was seen as the greatest challenge to Vladimir Putin’s regime in decades. Though it didn’t come to fruition, it nevertheless exposed some of the fissures in Putin’s ironclad control over the military and the course of the war on Ukraine. Could it be a harbinger of future revolts? How do Russian citizens feel about the continuation of the war? We speak with three scholars of history and political science to find out what this event might mean for Russia’s war machine and for Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

The Wagner rebellion may open the possibility of future revolts, but only if Ukraine’s counteroffensive makes more progress, says Serhii Plokhy. He reminds us of Russia’s past defeats and its pattern of regime change linked to failures on the battlefield.

In spite of its grave losses, Ukrainian morale remains high, says Alexadra Vacroux. But the war is forcing the population to undergo a major demographic shift, which will have a profound impact on the country’s recovery.

Sasha de Vogel gives insight into public opinion in Russia, the consequences for speaking out against the war, and why there is so little civil resistance. She dispels Western myths about the suppression and repression of Russian citizens and believes Putin will keep fighting this war until death.

Finally, the scholars share their opinions on what is needed to end this devastating war.

Loyalty and competence in Russia's armed forces

Loyalty and competence in Russia's armed forces

In the final week before the State Duma’s summer recess, Russian lawmakers have been ramming through some curious legislation, including several initiatives the authorities would apparently like to roll out now before Putin’s re-election campaign presumably kicks off in the fall. Notably, one last-minute amendment empowers the president to charge governors with the creation of “special militarized formations” during periods of mobilization, wartime, and martial law. These new armed groups, controlled by the state but separate from the military, will be yet another factor in Russia’s complicated civil-military relations — a subject that’s gained even more global attention in the aftermath of last month’s mutiny by Yevgeny Prigozhin and his Wagner Group mercenaries.

To learn more about the “specialized enterprises” forged in this new legislation and to explore what such a project says about the relationship between the military and everything else in Russia, Meduza welcomes back Kirill Shamiev, a Russian political scientist and a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, who recently wrote an essay on this subject for Carnegie Politika, titled “Suspensions, Detentions, and Mutinies: The Growing Gulf in Russia’s Civil-Military Relations.”

What was the global fallout of the Wagner mutiny?

What was the global fallout of the Wagner mutiny?

Where exactly is Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin – and what’s happening to Wagner fighters scattered around the globe? The Wagner Group has fighters far beyond the war in Ukraine, from Syria to Libya to the Central African Republic. While much of the world was focused on Moscow, the shockwaves from Prigozhin’s brief mutiny had global reverberations.

In Moscow's Shadows 106: The Spooky Side of Prigozhin's Mutiny

In Moscow's Shadows 106: The Spooky Side of Prigozhin's Mutiny

A shorter episode, because there is still so much about the causes, course and consequences of Prigozhin's mutiny that we still don't know. Instead, I focus in on the spook side: what were the FSB, FSO and GRU doing? To a large degree, the answer is> failing. Will they be taken to account? I doubt it, and this underlines the way that 'late Putinism' is characterised by its refusal or inability to reform.

An obituary for Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner Group

An obituary for Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner Group

Yevgeny Prigozhin is now (in)famous around the world for mounting a failed mutiny against the Russian military in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being absorbed into it, as the Kremlin reclaims its monopoly on violence and ends an experiment with outsourcing bits of the Ukraine invasion to mercenaries. The Naked Pravda has focused numerous times before on Wagner Group, and it’s now time to write the private military company’s obituary. Or is it?

How did Prigozhin manage to convince his men to embark on this misadventure? What did we learn about the Russian political elite in this crisis? And what should we expect in Belarus, where at least some remnant of Wagner Group is said to be headed? For insights into the failed insurrection and its aftermath, Meduza turns to three experts.

Ep 16: Mutiny in the Marriage - the tales of Andrea Yates and HMS Bounty

Andrea Yates murdered her five children, and this week Farz tells us that awful story. Before the murders, it’s actually a story of mental health, religion, and a question of what do people really want in their lives.

Taylor tells the unredeemable story of The Mutiny on the Bounty. There is colonization, enslavement, lots of sex crimes, and one official mutiny. We’ll just tell you now there’s also a guy named Thursday October, which Taylor LOVES and Farz hates. Plus, one bonus true crime story involving Marlon Brando, who we all agree is dumb handsome.

#54 - The Counter-Intuitive Way to Create Content That Converts (Part 2) - with Stewart Hillhouse

#54 - The Counter-Intuitive Way to Create Content That Converts (Part 2) - with Stewart Hillhouse

On this episode of Breadcrumbs Hot Takes Live by Revenue Cafe Podcast, we feature Stewart Hillhouse, Head of Content at Mutiny. Stewart shares his key takeaways on content that converts: get comfortable with zero-click content, stop producing random acts of content, and build future pipelines by leveraging super fans.

    HIGHLIGHT QUOTES

Zero-click content leads to more clicks - Stewart: "Giving away 80% of the content without a click actually gets your message across, makes you seem more interesting, and counterintuitively, actually leads to more clicks."

You can find out more about Stewart in the link below:

#53 - The Counter-Intuitive Way to Create Content That Converts (Part 1) - with Stewart Hillhouse

On this episode of Breadcrumbs Hot Takes Live by Revenue Cafe Podcast, we feature Stewart Hillhouse, Head of Content at Mutiny. His hot take is that over-indexing on conversion focused content actually decreases your conversion rates and makes it harder to prove the pipeline for content marketing. He shares his 3-step process in creating content: get insight from the audience, choose a repeatable and practical format, and string it together into a larger narrative.

    HIGHLIGHT QUOTES

Content that’s focused LESS on conversion actually converts more - Stewart: "Content that isn't focused on driving a new meeting booked or a new free trial signup actually does a better job at turning readers into pipeline than those conversion-focused pieces."
